Lightning

There is lightning in the forecast of which I don't want to be a casualty and need advise. How far from a direct approaching lightning storm would you leave a spot. A rule of thumb is a count 5 seconds after a lightning strike equates to the storm being 1 mile away.

I heard if you can hear the thunder you're in danger.

I heard the same , if you hear it you could get hit. Usually these T storms pass by fairly quickly this time of year. maybe head for safety but hang a round a while as you may be able to go out again after it passes.

I believe it can arc at least 10 miles. Once RIROCKHOUND held me prisoner in his skiff while we almost died.

Another time I remember running for my life off of a Little Compton beach when a storm jumped us.

There was a really great article in OTW a while back about this subject and the author basically said that if you can see lightening even on the horizon you should get the hell out there. He had a great story about how he saw lightening in the distance and his rod starting making a weird humming sound (graphite rod I'm assuming) and he later learned that was the sound of the rod getting charged up and ready to be struck!

One time at Cutty we were out in the kayaks and a storm rolled in and there was a gaggle of babes on the beach when we got in, it was like a sign from the heavens!

On of the best nights I ever had was at Wasque w/lightening in the distance. Good fish on every cast w/a darter. Only 3 of us on the beach. 1 guy fishing a bucktail couldn't get a hit. We offered him a darter and he said no. Next night we saw him there and he killed them on a bucktail.
