making a gaff

Finaly got around to making a custom gaff. Its is alot easyer to spend the twenty bucks on a nice gaff but to me there's something special about having something you made. Almost like custom rods the lengths of the grips and where you want them to be placed is all up to you, just like anything else the more time you spend and the more thought out your design the better end result.

This is what you'll need to make you basic gaff:

1...1"x4' hard wood dowel
2...2' peice of poly rope
3...two part apoxy
4...9/16 U nails
5...3' cork tape
6...the hook
7...string 1/16
8...butt cap

Before cuting the dowel to the desired length, cut a gap so that your hook fits snug. I do this by starting with a jig saw..then a mider saw and a drill.

Before setting the hook in place I file the end to the desired taper and paint it black. Fill in the gap with plenty on apoxy and use a U nail to hold it snug

Then cut your dowel to the desired length. I then drill about 11/4 from the end straight through. A little bigger then the size of your rope. From the top drill a hole twice the size of your rope in the center of he dowel. I use 40# to pull my rope through. Once through I burn the ends good and tack them down with one U nail. Apoxy.

Once I sand apoxy around the hook area I then wrap it tight with rope. This type rope can be found for cheap $$ at ship supply store. you can use a snell type tie(as recently shown in the fisherman, last week) or use a the same tie-off used in rod wrapping.

paint your gaff now or if it will be wrapped there is no need. Apply your cork tape. I add 3/4" more on each end for filing and then to be sanded. At this point if you wish to paint, wrap the ends with E size thread(use the same technic as in rod wrapping)

I find that wrapping a dowel is easyer then wraping a rod just because the diameter is the same from end to end. You can get as crazy as you want or keep things simple"its just gaff" People tell me mine is crazy...then I guess it fits me perfect!

Drill ahole through the butt cap, pull through with mono.

The finishing touch will be a bass decal between the diamonds and the name on the boat in the middle of the swirl.

CS - you use a wooden dowel or a fiberglass blank? i would need to do something in the 6' range for the b'way.

Thanks guys.....I haven't weighted it but it feels alittle on the heavy side for a gaff. You could also go with 7/8'' aluminum pipe which is a little lighter then a glass rod or wood.

Certain areas require an even longer gaff. Last year, after learning the hardway, I made a 18' gaff. : Guys who fish RI rocky shores know how turbulent and rough them waters can often be. Not only will a gaff of that length help you land BIG fish but more importantly, will not have you take unnecessary risks.

This 18' gaff (two piece telescopic) consists on two poles( 7/8"x9' and 11/2''x9'). I predrill two holes on the end held with nuts and bolts. I also build up one end with duct tape so theres less play. The hook is held with tw s/s pipe clamps. At 9' it fits in the van nice.

Most guys will never have the need for a 18' gaff but theres always those few hot spots that most guys won't even think about trying. Put your gaff together before you cast.

Gee, that is a pretty gaff. However, for you more pragmatic fisherman (from a former commercial guy) Use a oak staff, Take the right angled 1/2" point and take a hammer and nail it into the shaft (as it was designed) and wrap it with wire or heavy line. If you need one fast for a temporary fix you can use duct tape to hold it in place. Even this temporary fix will work on a gaff to lift about 1000 -2000 lbs of cod depending on the number of duct tape wraps you make!

Good Fishing, Lobsterman
