pop up virus protection

keep getting a pop up lately for Microsoft Virus Remover 09, telling me I have a virus and bringing me to Microsoft explore, which I have not used in years, I use Firefox. They want to scan my computer. I take it this is advertisement, adware or somerthing, but getting to be a PIA having to x out of it all the time. Sometimes have to control, alt, delete the darn thing. Any way to get rid of this crap.
Maybe I have a Virus? I hate these darn computer things when they don't work right.
