Biden has a great plan for WV coal miners

Biden says the people
currently digging coal in WV, can realistically transition to working as computer programmers.

Biden said “anyone who can shovel coal into a furnace, can write code.”

I’m sure the people who teach programming have some interesting opinions on that statement. And he’s the best hope the democrats have.

The man believes shoveling coal and writing code, require similar skills and intellect.

Curious what John R and TDF have to say.

I can’t believe you’d just slam coal miners as being stupid.

I really think that chronic menstruation is getting to your brain.

I'm not saying they're stupid. I'm saying that Biden is stupid (and you, for defending him), for assuming that the skills required to dig coal, are obviously and easily transferable to writing code. What could be more different? How does proficiency in one, suggest proficiency at the other?

To start you and Trumplican media misquoted him and only quoted the words that pushed your narrative.

"Does anybody think you're going to be able to stay in the middle class in the 20s and 30s of the 21st century without better education? Now brawn is no longer the measure. I come from a family, an area where there is coal mining, in Scranton. Anybody who can go down 300-3000 feet in a mine sure enough can learn how to program as well. But we don't think of it that way."

Odd that you allow your hero, Floridaman, all sorts of misstatements but seize on words that could have been better chosen by others, Covfefe?

Or are you saying that coal miners are too stupid and deplorable?

If you haven't figured it out yet coal mining is over. It isn't coming back.

where did i misquote? i quoted a different section of his speech.

But let’s stick with what you quoted. By what asinine logic, could
anyone believe that if you can descend 300 feet into a mine, THAT means you can learn to write code? Anyone who has ever been in an elevator that goes down, can make a living writing computer code? How can anyone say something that stupid out loud? And you reddens it, because a democrat said it. If Trump said it, you’d have posted a 10,000 word essay written by one of the Young Turks.

Trump has broken your brains.

Some coal miners might be brilliant at writing code. But no one can predict that, based on the fact that they go down an elevator shaft into a mine. That act, says nothing about one’s ability to write code.

Pete, if i applied for 1,000 jobs writing code, during how many interviews, would
my prospective employer say “I don’t care about your experience writing code. What we really need to know is, can you go down 300 feet and dig coal?”

How many times would
that question come up? If you’re
answer isn’t “never”, you’re batsh*t crazy.

Start reading slowly from the beginning, "Does anybody think you're going to be able to stay in the middle class in the 20s and 30s of the 21st century without better education? Now brawn is no longer the measure." You can't figure out what he is saying?

You're worried about one word and claim it broke my brain, yet you're supporting the man who discovered windmill cancer and repeatedly demonstrates his "humility" and "intelligence".

'I had some beautiful pictures taken in which I had a big smile on my face. I looked happy, I looked content, I looked like a very nice person, which in theory I am.'

'The beauty of me is that I’m very rich.'

(On the Duchess of Cambridge) 'Who wouldn’t take Kate’s picture and make lots of money if she does the nude sunbathing thing. Come on, Kate!'

'I think I am actually humble. I think I’m much more humble than you would understand.'

'I’m intelligent. Some people would say I’m very, very, very intelligent.”

“I have never seen a thin person drinking Diet Coke.' (well once in awhile, he's right)

'Sorry losers and haters, but my I.Q. is one of the highest – and you all know it! Please don’t feel so stupid or insecure, it’s not your fault.'

'Being nice to Rocket Man hasn't worked in 25 years, why would it work now? Clinton failed, Bush failed, and Obama failed. I won't fail.’ (Kim Jong-un came to power in 2011).

'My father gave me a small loan of a million dollars.'

'While Bette Midler is an extremely unattractive woman, I refuse to say that because I always insist on being politically correct.'

(On exporting goods to China) 'Listen, you m-----f------, we're going to tax you 25 per cent!'

(To Cher) 'I don’t wear a 'rug'— it’s mine. And I promise not to talk about your massive plastic surgeries that didn’t work.'

'I think Viagra is wonderful if you need it, if you have medical issues, if you’ve had surgery. I’ve just never needed it. Frankly, I wouldn’t mind if there were an anti-Viagra, something with the opposite effect. I’m not bragging. I’m just lucky. I don’t need it. I’ve always said, "If you need Viagra, you’re probably with the wrong girl."'

(On Puerto Rico) 'This is an island surrounded by water, big water, ocean water.'

'People love me. And you know what? I've been very successful. Everybody loves me.'

'My fingers are long and beautiful, as, it has been well documented, are various other parts of my body.'

'I think the only difference between me and other candidates is that I'm more honest and my women are more beautiful.'

'All of the women on The Apprentice flirted with me - consciously or unconsciously. That's to be expected.'

'I've said if Ivanka weren't my daughter, perhaps I'd be dating her.'

'A person who is very flat-chested is very hard to be a 10.'

'You know, it really doesn't matter what the media write as long as you've got a young, and beautiful, piece of ass.'

'Number one, I have great respect for women. I was the one that really broke the glass ceiling on behalf of women, more than anybody in the construction industry. My relationship, I think, is going to end up being very good with women.'

'Just arrived in Scotland. Place is going wild over the vote. They took their country back, just like we will take America back. No games!' (the day after the Brexit vote)

'It's freezing and snowing in New York – we need global warming!'
'The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make US manufacturing non-competitive.'

'By the way, I have great respect for China. I have many Chinese friends. They live in my buildings all over the place.'

'I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any voters, OK? It's, like, incredible.'

'I do know what to do and I would know how to bring Isil to the table or, beyond that, defeat Isil very quickly. And I'm not gonna tell you what it is.'

'An "extremely credible source" has called my office and told me that Barack Obama's birth certificate is a fraud.'

'And did you notice that baby was crying through half of the speech and I didn't get angry? Not once. Did you notice that? That baby was driving me crazy. I didn't get angry once because I didn't want to insult the parents for not taking the kid out of the room!'

"Something very important, and indeed society-changing, may come out of the Ebola epidemic that will be a very good thing: NO SHAKING HANDS!'

'The worst thing a man can do is go bald. Never let yourself go bald.'

Frasier: Niles, I’ve just had the most marvelous idea for a website! People will post their opinions, cheeky bon mots, and insights, and others will reply in kind!

The transition, with training can also be made to solar and wind energy jobs. The hardest hit are the boomers who aren't old enough to retire but aren't young enough to often have the skills inherent in the younger generation because of lifelong exposure to technology...

Pete, no one disagrees with Biden, that you can no longer mine coal and expect to be upper middle class. If he had stopped there, that would be fine. But he didnt stop there. He said that if you can dig coal, that translates into an ability to write computer code. That’s what is laughably absurd. Why did he pick writing code? What possible
correlation can there be, between writing code, and digging coal?

the leading democratic candidate, says on TV that digging coal is correlated to writing computer code. All of you are defending him.

You think this makes me sad?

Biden humiliated himself, and you guys are defending him. i’m loving it, not crying. Thanks for asking, though, I guess.

Coal is not coming back anytime soon. We need to realize it, and figure out how best to move those areas on economically in the future.

i did not. I denied a correlation between their skill, and the skills required to write code.

Spence, what’s the connection between mining coal and writing code? Why would
ability in one field, say anything about ones ability in the other field?

Try to expand your thinking, not every sentence and the meaning is black or white. Could be he meant to imply if you have the balls and determination to take on such a dangerous and inherently unhealthy job in order to support your family, that with training that same drive might be enough to learn skills that might result in a better living wage.

I’m far from a computer expert and that is an understatement, but when I started my hobby Ledge Runner Bait business back in the late 80’s, I just didn’t have the money to pay anyone to design a web site, so I picked up an HTML book for dummies and with some reading, lots of patience and trial and error, I think the web site turned out decent.

So yes Biden may have hinted, desire, training and patience might be enough, stretch your partisan brain and maybe you can read between the lines.

Actuaries are as bright a group as i’ve ever encountered. So are doctors. That doesn’t mean that good actuaries make good doctors. And that’s not an insult to
anyone. Some jobs are so different, that being good at one, doesn’t predict the ability to be good at another. Many miners might make good programmers, but you can’t tell
that by virtue of the fact that they are miners.

This is really controversial?

Directly, probably few.
But the so called soft skills that are intrinsic to jobs absolutely translate between fields (organization, management, leadership, communication etc..)

I don't think anyone, Biden included is implying you walk out of the mine straight to a job writing code. But with the training and opportunities, many absolutely can transition to other careers. Models exist showing that it can work. Many of these folks went into mining because it was there and available. Not because their intellect was lacking or that their particular skills fit the job. That can translate to other fields.

Frankly, I find this a much more honest approach than Trump touting how he will bring coal back. That was a flat out lie. Ask Murray energy workers how that is going for them.

If we were to stop using coal or oil for energy purposes, would we totally stop the mining of them? We would certainly need a lot less. But what about all the byproducts that are produced from them? I'm not arguing one way or the other, but am genuinely curious about it. I suppose we could find other ways to make the products that are now derived from them. Or just replace those products with something else.

And you are wound about one word, try windmill and cancer or Covfefe.

Google Biden and code and see what media is all excited about it.

i don’t think he meant they could
do it today. I’m not claiming that. But not everyone can be trained to write code. Not everyone has the aptitude, are you saying you disagree with that? Really?

Why didn’t he say, everyone who can shovel coal into a furnace, can be a doctor? Why writing code?

Two reasons I can think of.
1. There are existing models and programs where that exact transition has happened in that region.

2. Your average 37 year old miner out of work is not going back to undergrad pre med, then med school, then residency etc. to be a doctor. They probably can take on an associates or some equivalent training to get involved in a computer based industry, alternative energy etc.. This is a far saner approach for that region than 'We're going to bring back Coal'

Bryan, if you have evidence that "anyone who can shovel coal" can be taught to write code, what is it? I am stunned you're saying this. One profession is unskilled physical labor, one is purely intellectual, technical problem solving. Couldn't be more different. If every coal miner can learn to write code, who probably can't learn to write code? Anyone? If you were a high school guidance counselor, is there any kind of kid, and kind at all, to whom you would not suggest a career as a computer programmer?

If they could all write code, why aren't they doing that? Better money, much safer, better longevity, more stable. Coal mining seems to me, to be what people do, who have zero other options.

I don't see it as anything close to sane.
