I saw a couple originals and they didn't have eyes. One had hook hangers and the other one didn't. The ones I saw came from a person who worked with Ernest.

CS, can you post a picture of yours
Someone made a bunch or they were a small production lure.
Some were found on the Vineyard, and one from PA I think.
Not sure where the rest were found, but very early

They may always remain a mystery. If the guys on this site don't know who made it we should just call it the "Mystery Needle".

I've asked plenty of old timers and many say they've seen it before but have no idea who made them.

So how many do we know about now? I have one. Peter - you must have half a dozen or so? Now Capesams has some. Any more out there?

Well in my research for an upcoming piece for the mag I came across a few of these in the possesion of a noted "August" fisherman on the Cape. Seems those needles came from the Staten Island area of NYC. They were home made by a small group of guys who just wanted the advantage of a rigged eel without the fuss, reeled slowly through the water that looked like rigged eels, another very popular bait then, which is actuallly, according to my source, what they were supposed to represent not needlfish per se but they do fit the description.

They were made from 12 inches to 18 inches long. 1950's, early 1950's. Most are solid black or solid green and were hardwood dowels.

Knowing the man as I do, I take his word as gospel.

Why even try.........
