Slow news day.

Navy officer to be relieved of his command, defense official says - CNN.com

Quote:
Washington (CNN) -- Navy Capt. Owen Honors, who produced profanity- and slur-laden videos while second in command of the USS Enterprise, has been relieved of his command of the ship, a senior defense official told CNN Tuesday.

Excerpts from the videos and descriptions of their content were first published Saturday by The Virginian-Pilot newspaper in Norfolk, Virginia.

The videos on the paper's website, reviewed by CNN, feature a man identified by two Navy officials and The Virginian-Pilot as Honors, who at the time was the executive officer, or second in command, of the aircraft carrier. He recently took command of the carrier, winning one of the most coveted assignments in the U.S. Navy, which has only 11 aircraft carriers.

wow profanity and slurs in the military, who would have thunk it?
I wonder if the people responsible know that Capt Honors sole duty is to DESTROY our enemies? that and keep his reports alive. I CANNOT wait for Spences response to this.

That's what I thought, but one can never be too sure these days (is that smiley inappropriate?)

Everything I'm seeing so far is that he is (was) one kick-a$$ officer. Topgun, XO, former skipper of USS Mt Whitney (Black Sea / Georgia / Russian Incursion 2008), XO of a highly regarded wartime cruise of the Big E in 2006.

The Big E being the oldest (non-wooden) combat warship in the US Navy is apparently quite the tough nut to keep craking time and time again.

You guys on drugs? He is one of 11 who command aircraft carriers and has a great resume. Kind of like th egorgeous blonde who can't hold a conversation.

So what, he films himself acting like a jackass? He is a disgrace to the
Navy and this country.

Blow off steam? ok, but filming it is STUPID! Blaming it on the Democrats is stupid too.

Rationalize it anyway you want, but anyone would have fired this guy.

Stcroixman, just curious.
Are you "disgraced" that while you were y#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&g it up with your friends and family this Christmas tens of thousands of our men and women were over seas, hoping for nothing more than a phone call from their family?
How about the guys several hundred feet under the sea for months at time in a sub, whens "quiting time"? When do you get to kick back and have a beer? Chase a few girls? Hell, TALK to a girl?
How about being deployed for months at sea, nothing around you but the same guys, day in and day out? What brakes the monotony?
Who would fight better for your safety a crew that is bored at sea or a crew that knows their leaders will make them laugh and make light of a bad situation.
Have you seen pics from WAAAAAY back in the 1940s when Betty Grable and other pin ups visited the troops? Does that embarass you, are you ashamed of your country.
The military has standards but the reality is that is made up of 90% young, horny, KIDS. They need to be amused and more power to them.
This is insane and once again political correctness gone crazy

They've been coed for decades...not just now.

Somewhere in my house I got pictures of my Division officer, as well as a few of the other Div-O's, from when I was in....dressed in Drag holding up a sign calling himself the O'Bannon Whore...then they proceeded to have a "Drag" race around the decks as we laughed our Asses off.

Guy was a warrant officer who had 27 years at sea under his belt....I still had plenty of respect for him after he did that, as well as most of the other guys on the ship.

Its called lightening up for a few....there is a lot of tension on a ship. Take a look at your bureau when you go home...now picture sleeping on it.....for 3 and a 1/2 to 5 years, because that about all the personal space you get.........oh yeah, stack that same bureau 3 high and put 75 of them in your house. Don't forget that probably 10% of them probably annoy the #^&#^&#^&#^& out of you on a daily basis too.

You don't think they need to lighten up a bit w/ a little craziness....it harmless fun.

In some ways I'm surprised this guy went to the lengths of "comedy" that he did - certainly in this day and age. But it was pretty funny overall. BUT (here is the spencism part) by all reports he took a ship with a miserable morale and a lot of problems and made the vast majority of them blow off steam and reverse the poor morale. Not an easy thing to do I'm told.

As for the video, it was pretty funny. It was also a compilation of the most offensive and risque many previous videos. Go take a couple years of the most offensive clips from South Park and see what people think. Certainly the old foggies that have never seen it.

There are a lot of things we don't understand as civilians. We won't see the messages, humorously or crassly delivered in that video, that people in the Navy will have seen. And oddly enough, there were a few.

Its all moot now. Capt Honors has been sacrificed. I have a feeling he will land on his feet somewhere. Wouldn't be surprised if he as the first Navy Capt (retired) to host SNL, that would be sumptin.

Obama was glad Vick was provided a 2nd chance. What complete BS. This guy was a very, very good man and commander from what I read.

We should all be thankful for men and women like him. Just a damn shame.

Once again, in private fine, making videos when you are at that level of command is reckless. There are no 2nd chances in the military it isn't like a regular job.

He may be a fine officer, but so wasn't Patton and Macarthur and I am pretty sure there plugs were pulled too.

My father served 4 years in Navy in WWII and called him a disgrace so it isn't just me.

And I hate Obamao too, but i call it like it is. I am not some pro military, pro republican, anti democrat, anti gay , anti tax , anti everything internet stuffed shirt.

If it's so funny why isn't evry officer coming to his defense?
As for comparisons to letting off steam at a USO show - nice try.

Last I checked they weren't making videos of gays, guy on guy and gal on gal. They had Katy Perry types performing

this has nothing to do with politics.
Its the culture of wussification in this country.
In the context of this article I read that in 2008 a marine was filmed in Iraq throwing a puppy off a cliff. he was removed from duty. he can go and kill our enemies, but puppies are off limits.
I read tons of miliary novels. Just got done reading brothers in battle, best of friends about Bill Guarnier and Babe Heffron. Famous members of the Band of Brothers, 101st Airborne. They stated multiple times in the book that the shot the SS everytime, even when the surrendered. thats against every rule of war, but they did it and Im sure most did. Imagine today, that would be captured on some iphone and broadcast around the word, st criox man would have been disgraced and say these boys should be removed and courtmartialed.

I was in 1990 - 94 and we were pc'd to death because of Tailhook. This XO, now CO was nuts to think this wouldn't get him axed, I'm surprised it took so long.
That said, tension on a ship is sky high given the close quarters, long hours, and everyday life underway. The morale boost this video must have brought to the ship cannot be understated.

It is more pussification. For Christmas I got Adam Carolla's book "In 50 years we'll all be Chicks" this story would have of made a chapter.

ahh, Tailhook. I think one of my all time favorite rants works just as well for this topic!

From comedian Drew Carey (former Marine)

“How many militant feminists does it take to change a lightbulb? Two.
One to change the bulb, and one to kiss my a**.

That’s right. I said kiss my a**. ‘Cause I’ve had it. I’m tired of being pushed around. Tired of being grouped in with all the dead-beat dads and rapists and lecherous bosses just because I’m a man. All men aren’t “potential rapists. I’m not a potential rapist. But, I am a potential murderer if all of you don’t shut up and get out of my face already.

You’ve ruined it for everybody. Everybody, do you hear me? Men, women, everybody. Because of you and everyone else in this society that needs to play political victim and go to court instead of just dealing with it themselves, no one can have any kind of fun anymore. Men and women can’t flirt, or hug, or look at anyone sideways because of you and your lawyers.

Are you happy? You’ve used a stink bomb to kill a few ants. And while I’m at it... Naval Aviators, who are willing to die so that we can have low prices at the gas pump, should be able to throw the wildest parties they can manage without one uptight biddy coming in and stopping it.
There were scads of women at that Tailhook party who were having the time of their lives, voluntarily being just as debauched as any of the men were. Everyone who flew a plane, or even knew someone who flew a plane, knew how wild those parties were and what went on. What did she expect? A prayer service?

And why didn’t she just throw some punches of her own when these couple of guys groped her? Why didn’t she give them what they had coming and just kick them in the balls? Didn’t our tax money go to teach her how to fight? I’m not trying to make the idiotic “she had it coming argument here, which would go something like “of course they grabbed her breasts, look how big they are.

Plus, just reaching out and grabbing some boob is wrong no matter what.
When I was in college, even at our most drunken fraternity parties we never acted like that. No matter how hard I try I can’t think of an excuse good enough to do something like that. But it’s still nothing to lose a career over.

Besides, fighter pilots are supposed to be aggressive a*******. That’s what we pay them for. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want a navy full of fighter pilots who are gifted at giving sensitivity seminars. I want mad-dog, rabid killers going to battle for me and mine. Man or woman. When our stable gas prices are threatened by a Middle-Eastern Madman, when we want to force our form of government on some poor, unsuspecting Latin American country, when uppity foreign diplomats “forget to pay their parking tickets, I want to be able to call on men and women who like to fight and drink.

I want a naval officer who knows how to whack some drunk in the balls when he grabs her t***, not call a press conference and a lawyer.

If you’re a wimp who doesn’t know how to find the exit at a rowdy party, go fly a kite, not a jet fighter.

-So there,

making s-b.com a kinder, gentler place for all

Thanks, Jim. That Drew Carey rant pretty much sums up my feelings on this.

In the article I read on this yesterday, one of the first people to come to his defense was a female who was serving under him on the ship. It's kind of funny that shows like SNL can get away with offensive skits every week. But someone who has committed his life to defending our freedom of speech and way of life is relieved of duty because he blows off steam with some raunchy skits?

SNL is broadcast all over the world
This was a limited audience, under his command. He is responsible for a higher code in the military, however this is personal between he and his crew. Men and women he was responsible for, their mental and physical well being. It was comedy, nothing more. If the thought is that things that can potentially be sensitive to others should not be allowed, what does this mean for DIs and boot camp?

I meant that I find it ironic that he's protecting freedom of speech (and all other freedoms) for others, yet he's not allowed to say and do what he wants on the ship he commands. What message does that send to our military personnel?
