I used to use a 3 hp on a 12' Jon Boat.

I had this motor on a 12-foot Starcraft tin boat for a season and a half. It is a 20-inch ("long") shaft motor, where my transom was 15 inches. I used the shallow water bracket on the motor which kept it tilted up a little. The motor was great for getting around the pond, but was too small to get the boat (and me) up on plane. I upgraded to a 10-hp short shaft. So, yes this motor would work on a 12-foot boat if you dont plan on water skiing.

6HP is plenty of horses for a 12' boat, that's for sure.
