PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A state lawmaker is seeking to make the harbor seal the official marine mammal of Rhode Island.

The Providence Journal reports that Rep. Samuel Azzinaro introduced the legislation Wednesday.

The Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce had sent the Westerly lawmaker a letter citing a report that calls the seal the only marine mammal that "can truly be called a resident of Rhode Island." The group says the designation will help raise awareness and appreciation of the seal.

The legislation was requested by the group, along with Save The Bay, the Roger Williams Park Zoo and the North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce.

Seeing more of the darn things each year in RI waters and always think about how much they consume. To some they've become a commodity as people are encouraged to hike to Rome Pt. or go on a seal tour.

And isn't it heart warming when the good folks at Mystic Aquarium release a rehabbed seal in RI?

right now there are 2 or 3 groups/ boats making money on them .......... come pay to see the seals .yet there are hundreds being hurt by them .fisherman & lobstermen . I have a good friend that saw the lobster business crashing in the bay / he downsized & then a few years later sold out ........... He told me they get so smart that they will follow a trot line cleaning out the bait or if they get there later the lobsters

Who the #^&#^&#^&#^& would pay money to see seals?

At least with the Chatham seal watch tours, you have a 50/50 chance of seeing one eaten by Whitey.

That is the only reason I would pay to see seals - as bait.

tHE hUMP bACK is moving north ....... the big guy was among the diggers this morning right up at Rocky Point .

I saw where he was sighted & unlike the photos of Dec & earlier this week .where he could have been in the channels .................... today the depth of the whole area ranges 18 to 24 feet /that has to be amazing ...probably has just a couple of feet above & below him

ENJOY WHAT YOU HAVE !!!
