spar.... urethane or varnish???

I have been using helmsman spar for years and need to get more the other day, and went to Lowes and the paint guy asked me if I was sure that was what I wanted. so I told him yes, and asked why? he said that Cabot Spar Varnish is cheaper and far more durable than the urethane . so now its got me thinking...

If it were me I'd get the spar in satin in the quarts. More expensive but quarts don't have to be VOC compliant like the gallons do and not the same product IMO.
