George your stuff looks perfect as always.

Can you give us some details on the darters? How much do they weigh and how big are they. I'm just finishing some up for my light rod but I want to make some in the 3.5-4 oz range for a heavier rod I am working on for next year...

Are those still the hard maple you were working with or did you switch to something else?

They are just Pichney/Lupo/BM copies. I've done well on the BM originals over the years. 7"long, 1.25" dia, 3.3-3.5 oz. Most are soft maple saturated in sealer, I've got some hard maple as well that I think will weigh 3.7oz. The original BMs are around 3.5 oz, the Pichney and Lupo's closer to 3. I think you want your sealed blank to weigh about 2.7.....though of course I didn't figure that out until way late.

Great job George. The darter is the most rewarding design when you get it right. So many variables to consider in order to duplicate the same results when making multiple darters. I've dabbled with darters over a few years. Never made a jig, mostly freehand design copies. Luckily they all swam pretty good. Would I be to bold to ask for a recommendation on building a jig for a particular design? Your plugs and asvise over the past years have always inspired me to keep the sawdust flying!

George .. I'm very interrested how those soft maple darters work .. I don't know if you tested them yet . I've only worked with soft maple once, and that was a board that sat in a barn 40 yrs.. I'd much prefer working with that compared to hard (brittle) maple . Seems like you got them dialed in with the sealer added weight too ..

I'm a hack compared to you guys... but soft maple ROCKS for darters. Great action. no splitting at least in my experience.
