Question Suitable Eeling Stick?

I'm currently looking at a used factory Lami SB 136 3M spinning rod (something like 10 feet+). Yellow blank.

It's got a very soft feel, kind of like a rubber band, that would be good for throwing pencil poppers. Bassmaster has something like it that he uses for jigging.

Do you think it would be good for throwing eels at night, with braided line?

Thanks...

It'll do it but its a heavy blank. You'll get tired I think.

Thank you Mike and Obi-John (you do a mean Yoda).

If I might ask...

1) What is/was the best application for this stick?

2) For eeling, would you want a stick with more back bone?

It was an extremely popular all around rod. It can be used for plugs and eels and you can also stick a piece of cut bait or clams on there and toss it out with a 4 OZ sinker. Trouble is it weighs about a pound.

For eeling , a really nice rod is the AllStar 1265/2. The arra 1204 and 1205 are also excellent but more money. The AllStar 1265/2 weighs about 5.5 OZ. Big difference if you are casting all night. I think you'll find the old Lami Fiberglass rod are used a lot by people ch#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&g bait now. They don't have to cast evry minute.

The SB136-3M would be good for bigger pencil poppers though cause its whippy.

WW - usually use a 9' Batson 1088 or 1089 for eeling and occasionally a XRA1205. I go to the 1205 or 1089 when I feel the need for a little more backbone. Sometimes, the stiffer blanks can lead to lip rippin on the eels depending on how you hook them.

I have not yet tried the AllStar that Saltheart mentions but a few people that fish them love them... I would be very curious how well it tosses an eel on the souped up MagE...

My eel stick!

My eel stick is a Lami SMB1083 built conventional by Rob Savage of NC. It has a moderate action that really lets me lay into it. Its a little heavier than the graphite blank would be but had it built very tip light so it fishes very light! It has yet to tire me out!

Nice rod and I believe the blank is about half the price of its graphite brother.

Thumbs up

Wow, thanks for all the follow-up info folks.

John, you really piqued my interested re: throwing eels with a conventional.

I prefer conventional reels, even at night...seems you can get more fighting leverage on a fish with a revolving spool reel (correct me if I'm wrong). Obviously, distance isn't as much of a necessity at night. But there is the convenience offered by a spinning outfit...

I guess a night-time reel would necessitate a level-wind...if you were going to eel a rocky area (like most of RI), what kind of setup would you lean towards? Would you use a heavy (50 lb. or heavier) braided line?

Swivel connection to the leader? Or tie direct?

FWW - I thought you used convetionals for eeling or are you pulling my leg a little ???

Seriously, if you use a conventional regularly, why wouldn't you consider it for eels. I know there are people that use spinners when eeling that normally would use conventional but I don't really give it mouch thought ( I don't think much).

I also don't bother with non-levelwinds, I'm more than happy to have a mechanical device laying the line down rather than with me worrying about it.

I tie direct leader to line but lately I've been using those tiny heavy duty spro swivels. They are smaller and slicker than the smallest knot I can make with 50# leader (I don't bother with putting glue on like some people & I haven't gotten around to using braids on conventionals). Those spros are less prone to picking up weeds than a big swivel or big knot.

So if you're using conv reels for other types of fishing but not for eels, give it a shot. There is no better way to let the bass pick up and run than with a conventional, and they are alot lighter than some spinning bait runner.

I'm just trying to figure out ways to get an extra 10-20 feet on an eel cast...

To get 10 or twenty feet extra on an eel cast....buy bigger eels.

I like 35 lb Spectron on an abu 6500 reel for eeling . The mag control on a Mag Elite does give you a little extra cushion for error casting them into the wind.

I use a 30 LB Ande leader with the 35 lb Spectron. A good long one.

my eeling set-up

i use the lami gsb1201m. i wrapped it as a conventional. i match it either with an abu 6500mag non-levelwind or a 145 squidder. both are spooled up with 30# mono. i wouldn't even consider using a spinning set up for eeling. the feel that i need is not acheivable with a spinner. i also prefer the non-levelwind as i can feel everything the eel does. the above blank is a bit pricy, but i am extremely happy with it so far. it is NOT a schoolie rod! i'll put its strength this way: the first fish i caught on it was mid tide at quonny b'way on an eel. the fish weighed just under 25#'s, and i surfed him in...... ..... can't wait to truly test the power of this rod.

When I say "Eel rod" I mean for from the beach. If you are tossing them into Quonny Breachway or the Canal or something like that , you need something heavier than the rods I recommended.

Wink Eel rod

Hey FWW! No one has mentioned rods built on Pac-Bay/Sabre blanks- They're U.S. made and pretty affordable. I built a really nice eel'lin rod on a P.P/S #IGSC1207 that I cropped to 9'6" and mounted a Penn 525 to. The graphite rod is very sensitive so you can really feel when your about to get a hit- the eels start to shiver. The only problem is that I have to teach the eels French because the rod casts so far.......... Anyway I still use a Lami SSB 1362 a lot for spinning in the suds...It really rockets them out there and the blank weighs 8.75 ozs.-not an awful lot. Go to a custom shop- they'll be happy to let you try different rods out.....Work Stinks- FISH!

hehehe.... The Azores would be fine enough for me...

The PacBays are made in China and are essentially the same as the Batsons as "Batson" formerly worked for Pac Bay. Roughly the same as the PB, I find the Batsons a little crisper feeling and they are cheaper too. One odd thing about the Batsons is that the take off 2 inches on each one as it is so the 9 footer is really 8-10"...

Wow, thanks again fellas!

John-

I guess it's a thing called habit. Most of the places I have eeled on the shore was with a spinning outfit at night...b/c I was too chicken to try a conventional reel loaded with braid. The thought of powercasting a conventional loaded with braid STILL scares the crap out of me. But, the nice thing about eeling at night is...you don't need to powercast!

Obviously, while drifting eels on a boat or on bridges (Anthiers or "Big" Bridge on the Vineyard is an example), I have always defaulted to conventional.

I'm kind of schizo, b/c on the rare occasion I soak a bait at night I use a non-levelwind (with mono) conventional!

You know...it's scary we are on the same wavelength with the swivels. Because I've been experimenting with those low profile SPRO's too!!! They are great b/c they can pass through your guides w/o chipping them, but, on some of them it's a little harder to tie the mono on the eyes tightly.

Some people I know have strong feelings about eeling with swivels. The major objection I have heard from die-hard eelers is that the swivel causes the eel to rotate, imparting an un-natural and thus un-appealing action in the water.

I suppose, and I'm just guessing at this point, that if you use a slow enough retrieve, you could mitigate the rotation of the eel. But I'll have to experiment in the tub tonight to verify!

I'm hearing wonderful things about the Allstar, Lami XRA's and Rainshadow blanks for eeling. Looks like I'm gonna have to give Saltheart another call for a special purpose stick!

Bassmaster...that stick you have is a classic...does the weight of that blank slow you down after a while?

Thanks again...

WW

FWW - I prefer mono to mono but have been going to the spros when weedy. I have no problem knotting them. When of the reasons for swivels when eeling is because of spinners - not a problem with conventionals...

As for fishing with braids and powercasting? I don't really do either and get by fine with mono on the conventionals...

you're right John...

I agree with you John!

I recently caught my thumb while powercasting mono on a conventional reel, and I would hate to think of what would have happened if my thumb got pulled in on a braided line!!!

The strength & diameter on braid is great, but I think that it is not a wise choice to use on a conventional reel from shore.

Although braid is good for spinning reels... I personally wouldn't recommend using it for surfcasting on a conventional reel.

Mono works just fine & is much safer!!!

I would much rather be fishing

Don - braid is OK for conventionals I just have not gotten around to it yet. On my spinner, I found out casting with Spiderline can cut a finger though

JF - was it a blank that said that? Or a production rod, the rod may have been proudly made in the USA or it might be an older blank...

I believe that is a recent thing but you have to also realize as long as a certain percentage of a product is made in USA it can still be labled as such. That's just speculation though, since this is the internet and I can just say whatever I want to

I think capesams likes Bob Batson and for good reason

THIS could get very long, but I'll not make it so.

1. blank only is made in china, shp. here to usa......alot[penn] an others are built in mexico from the blanks that came from china.

2. how I know this is because I've had very long talks with the owners of pac-bay[sabre]

3. he told me that he had 5000 rod butts sitting on the loading docks waiting to get shp.ed to mexico so they could start building.

4. 1 co. alone there makes 125 rods a day, this is why you can buy them here so cheap.

5. 1 time he started to laugh very hard, I asked him to let me in on the joke, And I quote...he said if you could take off all the stickers on most of the rods in a store that you would find their mod. # on the blanks[made in china]

6. NOW..Bob Batson who was p/bay's back bone got sick & tired of their games left. an took half the workers with him to start up a new co. same blanks, but much better quality[rainshadow] these blanks are like the OLD sabre blanks that some of us just love. but these too are NOT made in the us, again over sea's

7. going back to #5...[I quote] those $455.oo fly rods you see at orv..... shops are our blanks[cheap $ like 35.00]. of corse they'll give you a new 1 if you break the 1 you just bought, not a bad profit.

8. So what you don't know won't hurt you as the saying go's.What go's on behind closed door's around the world would put the public in a tail spin.

9. that $500.oo vs reel/ how much do you think it cost to make?

10. AND yes , I've had long talks w/ bob batson too. when you spend lots of $ with these people ,they start talking back[info] or are they just telling stories?

BOAT fish do count.

Unhappy Had again?

Capescams, I will get to the bottom of this crap, trust me . Any way, I've been building rods for about 10-12 yrs. now and I've sold several rods on Pac Bay 'US' blanks- and I don't like being a liar. The Orvis ( and others) 'we'll replace it free' scam is'nt news to me .When someone demands an unconditional guarantee from me,I won't build them a rod- they're looking to abuse it. Abuse isn't what fishing is about-It's about learning to get along with our planet. Anyway ,nobody has had any problems with the P.B. rods-but I am going to give my wholesaler and PB a call. Who do you get your Rainshadows from? By the way, I don't use PB components-I know they're Taiwanese (or the like) Work Stinks....FISH!!!!

Batson Enterprises, Inc is an American owned and operated corporation, located in the Pacific Northwest town of Sequim, Washington.
We are home for the made in USA “Rainshadow” Fishing Rod Blanks and “Forecast” Rod Components. Our History includes more than 30 years of custom rod building, manufacturing, product development, and the supply of rod blanks and components to rod building enthusiasts, wholesale/distributors, and major manufacturers around the world.

************************************************** ***

I copied the above from the Rainshadow site and pasted it here.

I believe that "batson" brand rods are made overseas but "Rainshadows" also by Bob Batson are made in the USA. Suppose to be very nice blanks. I only ever built one rod on a rainshadow. A very light spinner which went (along with 6 other "practice rods" ) for "a give away price" at the Mass Bass Show to one of the guys here for his son. It seemed like a high quality blank to me.
