I've always ignited them...and let them burn out.
Usually around the 4th of July....and never near the water.

I'm sure there's a complicated "green" way to do it....I'm just telling you what I do.

Tight lines Bob....

I don't know about dates on the fire-extinguisher, I just know (if it has a gauge) it MUST be in the Green.

I've been 'warned' about that twice...different ramps luckily.
Glad you brought this up...I think I need to replace mine....

Dry chem extinguishes technically good for 6 years. After that need inspection and recharge. Cheaper just to replace

I curse quite a bit..... I likely will be due to replace mine again this season. Should be quite a 4th of July if I go with Gilly's idea as I have at least two sealed NIP sets of flares that are expired but likely perfectly good.....

Expired flares and diesel fuel. Use them to light up piles of brush I burn.

No boat, back in the suds.

Just reading up on West Marine sale before I go check my flares. Replacement interval is 42 months from manufacture date. Be sure to check date when you purchase.

Different flares have different shelf life, best t check dates on the flares themselves. IIRC my solas flare have a 5 year shelf life.
