Dog Owner Tick Question

Anyone out there use K9 Advantix on their dogs? I have been using FrontLine Plus and was wondering if there is a different option. Its been on the market for a while so I would think side effects would have bubbled up by now. Not that frontline doesn't work but always looking for something better.

Frontline sucks in my findings!

I have two dogs and we spend a lot of time in the woods and beaches.

Both my dogs got crazy flea outbreaks last year. Had to bomb the house and both vehicles!

I switched to the k9 advantix and no issues since.

I wouldn't go back to the frontline even if it was free.

I also started using a clean and tick collar, the expensive kind, just as a back up plan.

Chris,

What flea colar do you use? Both my dogs get the Frontline, but I still pick fleas off of them almost every woods outing.

I need to check on k9.

Remember that the stuff like Frontline isn't a repellent but kills the ticks when they bite the dog. So if you go and play in the grass you'll still bring 'em into the house.

Just the opposite for me.K9 Advantix did absolutely nothing that Frontline Plus couldn't do for my boys. The only difference is Advantix cost almost double the price.Have never found a tick or flea in my home while using Frontline Plus.

It may not have been the dogs that brought the fleas in the house.

Exclamation doh

been saying it til i'm blue in the face.....

those chemicals have side effects big-time

i would never put a collar on a dog loaded with chemicals
because then your making them breathe it in constantly
AND THAT IS REAL BAD for them in my opinion

pennyroyal oil tho is a natural deterrent and you can soak
a string in it and put it on the dog when he's out side

FLEAS are so easy .... all ya do is powder the dog
(on their belly)
with a little brewer's yeast because fleas, tics and, mosquitoes
hate the vitamin B1 in it....

that way when they lick themselves they are ingesting even more brewers yeast

i put it in my dogs food like every other day for variety reasons
she loves it....

i take it too! and a mosquito will land on my arm if brave
but won't bite and they fly away or they don't land at all
they have very sophisticated tasting abilities...

Lastly : RATHER than blowing the $cash on the insecticides
buy the dog a new CEDAR chip pillow as fleas cannot stand cedar

Raven I love your natural approach!!

I'll have to try those options.

I've never been a fan of chemicals on the dogs but after last years outbreak of fleas I feel like I lost the battle.

Where can you get the brewers yeast? Is there a special brand? Any other info would be great thanks!!!

chef

the brewers yeast is the by product left over from making beer
it doesn't make bread rise as its a different kind
and needs to be refrigerated ...

its sold in most health food stores or whole food market' s
it does wonders for your skin... especially when you have rashes from exposure to chemicals or say poison ivy

it has every B vitamin in it except for vitamin B-12
which is found in meat and mushrooms

when i wiz my protein shakes in the blender i always add
a heaping tablespoon of it... has a great flavor to it...

makes milk taste like old fashioned milk

if you take two identical dog food bowls and add exactly one cup of dry dog food to each one but add a teaspoon of brewers yeast to one of them and set both down on the floor....your dog will smell them both and instinctively eat the brewers yeast bowl every time.

i tried advantix when i first got my dog. He had major side effects.. lethargic and he couldn't walk 4 feet without needing to eat his butt hole. Felt terrible.
front line is better on the side effects but i hate using it and only do rarely.

Exactly. Ticks have to be attached to a host for at least 24 hours before they transmit Lyme disease. Frontline doesn't keep them from attaching--it just kills them when they start feeding on the blood.

You basically want the ticks to attach to the treated dog, and not fall off beforehand and attach to you. Of course, the best thing to do is search the dog for ticks as soon as they are ready to come inside. It's just that deer ticks are so freaking tiny that they can be tough to find.

Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools, because they have to say something.

Arrow forgot to mention

you ain't kidding their tiny !!

i couldn't believe it...had to put glasses on to see one
it was so small

we bought front line but never used it...
i still cringe at the thought
I've had some bad experiences with POISONS

i'll use it on the darn cat tho cuz he cruises everywhere
that lil bastid....

and the dog is a cinch to wash....

final mention on brewers yeast as i always use
both natural remedies to back up the use of insecticide
type products or scientific products ect...

i paid: 4.32 cents for 8 ounces of the yellow powder
there is a flaked form but you don't want "that kind" for the pets.

that kind is preferable if ya wanna stir it into milk tho
because it dissolves rapidly
