Teacher Dues or Fired?

Quote:
A retired U.S. Marine who runs a high school ROTC program in Worcester says he faces the boot for refusing to pay local union dues, leaving the 58-year-old father of two crying foul and school administrators bewildered.

“It just seems crazy that they’re gonna fire me over $500,” said Maj. Stephen L. Godin, senior naval science instructor at the Naval Junior ROTC Unit of North High School. “Everyone’s talking about finding good teachers - I haven’t missed a day in 14 years.”

Indeed, North High School Principal Matthew Morse praised Godin yesterday as an “excellent” instructor who has turned his program into a top junior ROTC academy.

A little too far for a teacher union? And the law?

Why does a law REQUIRE one to be in the union?

Because in Mass and RI the Unions have bought and paid for majority representation in state government. The taxpayer doesn't stand a chance...

As far as I know there is no law that requires you to join a union.

I have worked places that have required you to pay a stipend to a union....whether you are a member or not...but that was not a law...that was something that was negotiated as part of the contract.

Sounds like BS to me

I think that if your job is covered by an union, you have to join in. You don't have a choice. What does "retired US Marine" have to do with the story? I

I don't think they can force you to join....like I mentioned before, they may still have to pay an equivilant to the dues but choose not to be a union member

Today, Unions do significantly more harm to public school systems than they help. Seniority based wages, strong-armed tactics, invincibility to firings... all reasons that contribute to the bloated expense of the US education system while still lagging behind in actual education to the students.

Unions and politics are a principle reason why my kids will go to private school.
