wraped as a spiral with calcutta 400 worked very well as far as casting.For a 9 ft rod it worked out great now will have to use it enough to catch fish and see how it really works. was trying it out down on Canal at Bell road and ran into Newell guy-- who by the way make plugs of extremely impressive Quality--and let him try it out so you can check with him as to how it casts.He is working on a swimming eelskin plug the swam phenomenally get your orders in quick.

Putting the finishing touches on an 11' surf stick now that spiraled. Also started one of the new Batson SU1209's that i'm going to spiral wrap for jigging the ditch.

Am a true beliver in these rods now.

I can attest to the throwing capabilities of this rod. UNBELIEVABLE this is the only 9' rod I have ever tried where the "middle" can be reached. I am truely impressed with that stick. Great job bawana. It was nice meeting and talking with you and bdsandman.

I can attest to Bawana's work. Not only that 1209 spiral but the rest of his mobile quiver. Just some beautiful work in there. Speaking of beautiful work, have ya seen Newell Guy's plugs... Yum!

Thanks for the feedback. I'm really glad to hear you figured out you can cast a spiral wrapped guide. THere are a lot of people who don' tthink it is possible, or that it just won't work. THere are also VERY few who build spiral wrapped surf rods, I think because of the fear of casting length reduction. YOu might wanna post your results, as you progress on teh rodbuilding boards as well as on this one here. I'm sure there would be quite a few interested in your results. imo.

Well to add to this thread as I type there is an SW 1209 on the dryer at fishaholics house that we kicked out this afternoon/evening. Nothing fancy as far as wraps go but we did set it up spiral! I like the way it feels! Only time will tell as far as casting and fish fighting capabilities but from the way my spiral boat rods fish I am sure I will be happy!!

It's all your fault Billy!! That is that we are all in "SPIRAL" mode!!

IRuss, I told you spiral set up properly only improves the performance of a rod, with virtually no downside besides people thinking it looks funny, and that people think it doesn't cast as well. SInce I don't wrap any surf rods, I couldn't say for sure if it casted well or not, but I knew set up properly it would. Thanks for testing for me, lol.

I am the last person who should be asking this. Considering I haven't ever tried a conventional setup or built my own rod, but I am going to ask anyways.

I should have asked FishAddict when I fished with him, but here is good too.

What is the advantages of a spiral wrap and how does it affect the handling? Seems likely to spiral in your hands, especially if your are off on the spline at all

IWK - search this forum for Spiral wrap, there were a few lengthy discussions where people had the same concerns as you.

Only time the rod wants to flip over is when the guides are on top. Spine will not make a difference - guide on top, rod wants to flip, spiral wrapped rod, rod is 100% stable. Period.

I'm fishing a spiral wrapped jiggin stick (by Billy40) for cod and so far so good . . . although the casting I do is alot different (a long underhand sweep to launch the jig as far away from the bait dunkin googins on a party boat as poosible) than surfcasting. I think it's a combination of the blank (a GUSA Monster Mag) and the spiral but I seem to be able to cast further than with "conventional" wrap.

Like Billy said teh only downside is answering 400 questions about your twisted guides, lol

i put on a 7000 BG narrow spool from mikes...so far so good...now if there were just some fish around to catch...
