9' LIGHT mod fast blank? - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

I'm llooking to build a 9' rod. I'd like one that is simiiar in action to my Loomis sur 1266, but obviously shorter. Any advice on blanks I should look at? I've looked at the rainshadow 1088, and may go w/it, but ultimately I'd like a lighter rod. Looking to throw 1-3 ounces/eels w/it.

Thanks for any recomendations.

This is definitely going to be a NIGHT rod. Nothing fancy. Black wraps, cork tape, no reel seat.

If you liked the feel and action on the SW1088 but want to go a bit lighter, give the ceiling a poke with the SW1087. The 10'er (SW1207) is a real sweet blank for 1-2oz metal. I do not like these blanks for eeling though, too fast and stiff for me. I still use glass for my eeling rods. Hope this helps..Enjoy

I don't fish eels but I would suggest that you check out the rainshadow SW1087. I have one and I use it for light plugging from the beach. 3oz is tops for it in my opinion and I fish an open sandy beach so I do not have to muscle fish around structure. I prefer it to the SW 1088. It is definately worth a look.

I have a couple of them

great plug rods..imo a little fast for eels but if you don't get you azz into it and just flip eels, this might be what your looking for

if not....I would go with a 1201L cut one foot off the butt

1087 is a good chioce. Like it was said ,eels OK if you don't lay into them. I used a Allstar 1087 for plugs and bait. Threw SS darters 2 3/8oz fine. If you can't find a leftover Allstar , check out a Batson 1087. A composite blank ,slightly less backbone but doable.

if you really want a 9' rod for eels, go glass (I have an all-star e-glass that I love for eels) or lami 1081m (i'd say moderate, not moderate fast - great all around rod - perfect for sluggos)

if you want something more for plugs that will throw eels, I'd look at the all star 1087 (i think batson is making the all star 1087 now, not sure what they call it but its different than the SW or SU series - very light rod)

have you looked at the 1-3 oz, 9 ft loomis? I don't know much about it but people seam to like it and you know you like the 1266.

Looking at my post... I'm going to throw 1-3 ounce plugs...and eels prob 50/50. I'm not looking at a strick eeling rod. Still good recomendations though.

Then I'd look at the lami 1081m. To me, its perfect for that application. Not great for eels but good enough.

I use the GLB1081M exclusivly for plugs and eels. Throws eels fine. Plus it has the backbone to put to the fish. Keep in mind the GSB1081M is the same blank. Lami puts the blank in 2 categories.

The ultimate graphite eel rod--a 10' Lami GSB 120 1L with a foot chopped off the butt.

You just won't have a warranty, but the GSB blanks are pretty tough.

thats my next move,I'v been tring to pull joe down the same path as well the GSB is a great all around blank.

Joe, my father in law built a gsb 132 1L...cut two feet off the butt...It's nice...I'd say if you want it a little faster, get the 132 1m and do the same thing...

If your father in-law saw wht I had planned he'd laugh his @$$ off. It is defintely going to be a basic ghetto rod. Blank, cork tape. no real seat. Single layer Black wraps, no underwrap. I am probably going to skip the epoxy on the wraps also, just protect them w/some tape, perhaps Tommy tape. one layer. I don't want to have to f'around in season when I have to replace guides which I always do, replaced 4-5 last year.

I guess if you already had a 132 blank on hand, that'd be one way to go. But you could achieve the same thing, and save a few bucks in the process, by lopping one foot off a 120
