Creek Chub 7300 Special w/Pikie Lip

I was reading through Frank Pintauro's (Hunting & Fishing Collectible Magazine) article on SW Classics (#2 in the Series) and came across the Creek Chubb Husky Surfster pictures. This was a hugely successful plug in the 1960s. Most were made by CC with the typical Surfster lip and 3 hooks but some RI fisherman preferred it with only 2 hook positions (Special) and a Pikie lip for sub surface fishing.

This color scheme is what CC called Purple Eel ... it was available either with glass eyes or tack eyes.

I decided to make this in AYC and rattle can paint it Hunter Green with Rusto Yellow belly and Rusto Red chin. It has one belly wt just aft of the belly hook position

Staying busy man!!

How'd the interview go??

The surfster body that I'm making now is dual purpose. With the surfster lip stays on top but with a pikie 3 lip it dives about 3 feet deep w a steady retrieve, but will stay on top if you crawl it.

Ive always loves that body shape.

And the creek chub colors are just awesome.

From what I can find it seems the Husky surfsters were 7300 and 7400 series?? You learn something new everyday!

Nice work BT!

The "special" is a heavily weighted plug (almost an ounce of lead in it if I recall)......very different than the regular surfster. I built one and it sucked. Maybe in a breachway or something....but disappointing for where I fish.

The original version I have does not use a Pikie lip, however.

George---

I only added .25Oz of lead amidships and a Pikie 3 lip... CC did sell some with Pikie lips for subsurface use.... I have not swum mine yet... the local res is still ice covered and more snow on the way tonight...

here are measurements taken from an original CC 7300 salt Special in 0.5 inch increments. The center of balance in an unweighted plug is 3 inches back from the nose. If you want to add wt this is the location to drill your belly hole.

Cool

A couple more 7300 and 7400 reproductions with Rusto light blue, machine gray sides and white belly on smaller plug. The body shapes have the "hips" more forward to improve the wiggle compared to the ones I made last week The smaller plug has a Pikie 2 while the big brother has a Pikie 3...
