This is getting out of hand

DMF MA
“ Recreational Lobster and Crab Gear Closure. DMF has established an annual November 1 – May 15 recreational lobster and crab trap gear closure. “

It’s been May 1st or when the right whales leave “gulf of main” waters,,,

Why the f does it apply to south side CC,,, I’m pissed!

I guess that’s what I get for not responding to the calls for comment... honestly thought the changes where only going to apply to north of CC

Benn dreaming about those April lobster feeds all winter.... this sucks..

Grrrrrr

I'm thinking there is a wholesale shift in who has power behind the politicians. Whatever your take on Progressives they wreck everything in sight whether good or bad.

They've got small government in Texas. If you decide to move there, bring some blankets.

The truth on the decision behind the regs is likely something along the lines of what Wdmso supposed.

Is the south side not exempted?

https://www.capecodtimes.com/story/n...es/4300072001/

Instead of shutting all state waters to lobster gear for three months beginning Feb. 1, the commission extended the closure to May 15 but exempted state waters south and southwest of the Cape. Whale survey records showed very few sightings of right whales in that area during the proposed closure period.

Mostly agree
Hardly any rec people lobstering past nov 1
Cuts a month or so to early lobstering

Where you are wrong is the right whales
In April some right whales are within a quarter mile of the beach on the south shore. Scituate and marshfield.

Every year they are tight to white horse beach areas and probably very close to where pots are set. Last couple years we have as many as ten grouped together.

I agree that their that close , Should have made my point clearer that I didn’t think single pot lines were involved in whale deaths compared 1000 ft trawls , and not sure what break away gear is require or rope strength, I have no dog in this conversation just trying to stay correctly informed. : )

They are all in hiding after storming the capitol. They had to use back channels to close the south side to lobstering. Next thing you know it they will be melting ice everywhere to save the pan fish and muskies. Just give it a month or so.

Those poor guys can’t launch pots until mid May, throw this in

Massachusetts Lobstermen's Association. She also says the cost is prohibitive — switching to ropeless gear could cost a single fisherman up to $70,000.

and watch the $$ of bugs go up or eat imports.....

SIX WEEKS!

Damn warmer waters inducing migration of species ranges...
On the plus side Black Sea Bass north of the canal... but that is also bad for Lobsters....

I know 70 grand I read that and was like ouch. but like any new technology and industry it’s adapt or find another profession. At least people are looking for solutions,

But sadly look at Texas they had newer solutions in their power grid. And then promptly blamed them when the whole grid failed, for political expedience , Kind of like this issue a patch here another patch their then when gets to the point Rolling lobster black outs , it’s somehow just progressives fault ? Funny how constant that argument is for just about every topic from right leaning friends decry insisting the word No to everything is actually a plan

Sushi place in New Haven called Miya's serves them. Owner is big on creating a food demand for invasives. They don't wait for peelers though. I understand the shell is soft enough once cooked.

I was always curious as to how this worked out?

This is from the Mass DMF site (REC)...

"Black sea bass and scup may be filleted but not skinned while at-sea. No more than two fillets per allowed fish may be possessed."

How is a factual measurement calculated from a fillet?
I've seen some real hacks at the fillet station....wouldn't this allow someone to catch/keep undersized fish and fault their filleting abilities, yet say they were of legal size when first caught?

Anyone ever get boarded or questioned with fillets onboard, or something similar??

......it finally happened, there are no more secret spots

Assuming you knew it was legal Paul... did you stand your ground, or just say "ok, next time"? I'm curious to what they said...

Be really nice if they allowed us to fillet Tautog out on the water... the docks down my way don't have fillet stations, and with the ramps being small and busy, I end up bringing them home to undress and freezing the racks if I'm not going out the next day

......it finally happened, there are no more secret spots

i usually go along to get along with any cops, but my big mouth got the best of me and i ended up calling dmf while he was on the boat. an hour later we were both clear that filleting at sea is totally fine. before i started doing charters i used to always skin at sea and just leave a tag of skin

my 1st wife didn't like me fishing so much
