Many states (a third) adopt CA emissions standards, usually, though not right off the bat. It costs extra and some states (IIRC) require manufacturers to not charge extra for it (which means that cost is passed to everyone)

I am OK with CA doing CA emmisions standards, but not require others subsidize it.

But keep it up and California will be porked once the Balkanization of the US happens.

The states I listed use California emissions standards. California’s regulation preceded the federal governments. In 1967 the State of California created the California Air Resources Board, and in 1970, the federal United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was established. I don’t recall any attempt to make emission control FREE.
Cars certainly last longer than they did in the 60s. At 100K they were close to done.
Now airbags I have a bigger problem with.

other states have the right to not have california dictate policy for them...

...California was granted a waiver to create it's own emission rules and then under the Obama administration, California leveraged the car industry’s desire for a single regulatory regime into an agreement with the federal government, under which the nationwide regulations would reflect California’s priorities.

California should focus on homelessness, tent cities and their filthy streets
