rod question

My current rod that I use does not have a long but and it makes it difficult to use at times. I have seen rods that you tuck the but under your arm, which gives you leverage and makes it easier to use. What lenght do you guys recomned. I am 6'2 if it makes a differnce.

thats why they call it fishing not catching

Well, I'm 6'2" (although probably a hair taller than you ) and I like 22" on a 10' spinners and 26" on a 10' conventional. I'd wager these are very common lengths.

Although, I can't think of any time I place the butt under my arm

I need a rod to use on small to medium size wood. It seems to me that the further the weight of the reel is on the rod, you might get more "control" on the movement of the lure. Mabey just a lightier rod then the one I am using now will work.
As far as t#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&g the rod under my arm mabey I am not decribing what I mean well. If your going to constanly pull the tip of the rod up, to make the lure move, the more the reel is postioned up the rod the less effort it will take to move the rod. Does this make sense? I am a boat guy converting to the shore so be easy on me guys.

I've found that as I get older a shorter butt allows me to cast more with my arms coming over the top and less with my body. This leads to a somewhat tip heavy rod which you can fish best in an upright position with the butt between your legs. When I was younger and more agile, I liked a longer butt, which I use to counter weight so the rod would balance level when my rod hand was in a retrieve position. This allows you to comfortably fish the rod paralell to the water (or even tip down), which is an advatage when working darters, bottles, and other subsurface plugs from a high position such as a breakwater or jetty.

Personally, while holding the rod and arms fully extended for the butt to be just short of my armpit..approx 24"...I'm 6'-1" all a matter of preference. That is what makes a rod truely "custom" it is built to how YOU want it.

Used hard and put away dirty....
