amps or A (=Ampere) is a unit for measuring electric intensity (I). Horsepower (=HP) is a unit for measuring the power (P) of an engine

Amps are a factor in calculating power, and so can be used to determine horsepower

Using Amps to compare any two items is not a truly useful metric. In theory, you would expect that as Amps increases so will your power output but that isn't necessarily accurate. Efficiency in the transfer of energy from electricity to mechanical power must also be considered. Amps is a measure of the energy going in, horsepower is a measure of the energy being put out. High Amps merely means that it will consume a lot of energy. Horsepower is an actual measure of the amount of work that can be done.

It would be the same as trying to tell which car is faster based on how much fuel they consume.

Go with HP.

That's high amps for a 2/5 hp. Is it a typo? Might want to check other sites.

maybe it requires a 15 amp circuit, no way a 2/5 hp motor runs with 15 amps, 1 and a half amps maybe.

go by horsepower, but be advised, the Chinese don't exactly tell the truth when it comes to stating H.P.

I don't know if you'd be happy with either one of those
what's wrong with a jet mini? bet you could find one used easily, i know where there is one collecting dust

1/2 HP is equal to .5

read alot of that horsepower vs. amps math .. Geez ,, They even have a name for playing with the numbers .. "Puffing".. There is alot of inefficiency with a single phase motor converting electricity to power, so any numbers are suspect . Bill your numbers are more realistic .. Pete thanks for the facts, I learned alot . Slip I think your right .. I thought a Jet was out of my present wallet but its in the ball park . Just have to sell a few more of wifes things on ebay . I have an idea ,,but wich model number Jet .. Thanks all .. Beware of "Puffing" ..

FWIW,

Amps is a current rating. Power is a measured in watts or Hp.

Amps X Volts = Watts

(this shows why a 220 volt line (vs 110) with the same amp motor produces twice the power)

746 watts = 1 Hp

So,

15 amps X 110 = 1650 watts / 746 = 2.21 Hp

4 amps X 110 = 440 /746 = .59 Hp

I bet there is a typo someplace. Are each 110 or is one 220 volt?
However, a lot of time you see "peak Hp"...which inflates the value and makes a better sales pitch.

.5hp - 4.2amp
.75hp - 6.3amps
1hp - 8.3amps
1.5hp - 12.5amps
2hp - 16.7amps

same size motor @ 240v
.5hp - 2.1amp
.75hp - 3.1amps
1hp - 4.2amps
1.5hp - 6.2amps
2hp - 8.3amps

I work with this crap every day.. so I'll make it simple...

HP is directly related to the strength of the motor, the larger the motor the less strain, but larger motors also use more energy which is the amps everyone is talking about, most modern motors are energy effecient,and amp problems most often occur when dealing with blower units and fans, not motors driving pumps or a reduction unit ( lathe head stock)...the only thing you need to concern yourself with amp wise, is the amount of items on that particular circuit...... each item draws a specific amount of current (amps) too much and the breaker will pop( it's like trying to get too much water through a small tube or hose, it has it's physical limits)...in most cases your shop vac will draw more current than your midi lathe...

I have had a turn crafter for several years now, I love it,last year I converted it to variable speed, I love that too, the only thing I'll say about the VS, is that on occasion, you need to blow the dust out of the motor brushes or the motor speed becomes erratic.. not a big deal, just routine maintenance..no biggie for me seeing that is how I make my living...

Speaking of all this, I'm in the process of replacing bearing in a coolant pump on a hardinge lathe right now, the bearings are causing the motor to over heat and over amping the circuit and trip the relay...

Ed; I have a Jet. A friend has a TurncrafterPro. The TurncrafterPro is the best bang for the buck. Better warrantee as well. Parts available right from PSI. You just can't go wrong with the TCP.

Just got done setting it up .. I ebayed a large BM black darter ,, A mint Point Jude Mackerel Cutlass ,,3 Sorby wood lathe tools .. A mint 6500cs Mag Elite and a Penn 710Z and some other small stuff (wifes) for this lathe .. one thing I learned ,, Now is not the time to sell off your plug collection on ebay .. plug market slid .. Amazon was the best deal with the free shipping ..This little lathe is fast ..
