Baseball & Hockey cards - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

Cleaning the fishing / computer room in preparation for the baby coming in February and I found my old hockey and baseball cards. They are mostly from 1985 or so until 1991. I really have little use for them but don't know how to get a fair deal on them. Do I just take them to a card shop and roll the dice? I know it's not the market like it once was, but I must have a few bucks sitting here. Any thoughts?

I tried to sell about 2,000 cards to a card shop last year and he wanted to do it as a bulk sale. He said it was too time consuming to sit and go threw them card by card. Offered me .04 a card if I remember right.

Sold my cards a couple yaesr ago...bought a new kayak trailer with the proceeds!!

I have, (no lie), 100,000 cards in my cellar, and they aren't worth the card stock that they are printed on for the most part. Larry must have had an Honus Wagner. Just for chits and giggles, I have 88, yes thats 88 Drew Bledsoe rookie cards, that's how extensive a collection I have. I have large, 5000 card storage boxes that is completely full of 87 fleer commons. I would not take them to a dealer. I would start selling them on EBAY. Only way to recoup any money. Dealer will tuck up your breezer and then sucker someone in buying the card again at a premium. I still like opening up the storage area and looking at them. I actually have given thought to start selling them as well.

I as well was thinking of thinning the hurd, there has to be some value to bird and magics rookie cards in a set as well as jordans, but you maybe right fleabay maybe the way.

The market on cards/comic books is at an all time low.

When we moved I had a big comic book collection, some where worth 300-500 bucks at their peak, now worth less than the original listed price.

As far cards go, do your research and find the few good cards in each batch.

The 1980 Topps set is worth big money.

If you have full sets, get yourself a price guide which can be found at card shops or magazine shops. Look to see what specific cards are worth money.

eBay is not the place, too many variables with collectors, condition ratings, then all the fees, a fee to list, a few if it sells, paypal fees etc.

If your serious about selling cards now you have to do your research and best bet is a shop or show and unload them there

Use a Beckett book to get an idea what some may be worth. Also the Friday after Thanksgiving at the Mansfield Holiday Inn there is a card show. Over 100 tables. Might be able to sell them there, my son and I go every month. Nice show.

A friend of mine part owned a card shop in New Bedford he since sold his half. But 80+% of his single card sales and sets were done on eBay. Pain in the ass to list and sell thousands of cards but it was their only way to move them.

The Beckett book is what a dealer will sell a card to you for, but turn around and go to another dealer and see what he'll give you for the same card. If your luck you'll get a dollar or a card you just paid a sawbuck for.

Ebay is the only way to sell cards.

If your buying still only buy cards that were printed before the explosion/proliferation/over production taht occured in the 80's. Rookie cards only. Maybe early 70's and back only. Single cards only. As I was typing this I went and retirved from bureau a book of rookie cards only that has the clear plastic card holders inside of it. The firs 26 cards are all Ken Griffey Jr. rookie cards. The first nine are Upper Deck. The are worth more than what I bought them for but now much. All the cards in this book (probably 125 or so) are the rookie cards I had left over after making full-sets of the same brand and year.

Look at what a 84 update Topps Clemmons is worth. Ten years ago you probably could not buy one for $400.00.

I havn't bought a Beckett in years, but if I decide to sell I have to have one.

Is it the one with no name on it?? I remember everyone and their mother was trying to get one of those.

The 1990 score card? They were the only company to make one if i remember correctly. Upper deck didn't make one that year.

Or the Topps error card?

At least with fleabay you'll recoup close to retail for many of the rookie cards. Try selling one to a local dealer and you lucky if he offers 25% of he face value. More than likely 10%.

Frank Thomas' first baseball card came from the Cape Cod League where played summers before hitting the majors.

I have my BIL's rookie card, he is on the front and Schilling's stats are on the back. They were both drafted by the Sox and played rookie ball for the Greensville Hornets. My BIL played 5 seasons making it up to Hartford for his last 2.
