Question For Cops!

What is the policy for cruisers to be using their sirens? Under what circumstances should they be used? If the cruiser is driving above the speed limit and obviously responding to an emergency...should the sirens be on? I have had many instances of late where a cruiser flys up behind me like I am supposed to know he is coming at speeds of 80 miles an hour with no siren going!!!! Damn dangerous if you ask me!

Almost time to get our fish on!!!

Display some situational awareness and keep an eye on your surroundings, there is no way a cruiser should sneak up on you unless you are ....

I drive for a living ,and see this all the time ,most of the time in mass. it's more like pushing you out of the way , I'm never in the 3rd lane in my big truck very expensive fine no matter what state your in. Like john said pay attention to your surrounings or you can lay on your E-Brake really fast and let it off fast ,brake lights don't light up, then try to explain to the entire state police force what happened when the trooper is burried in your trunk.

John I am always aware and use all 3 mirrors constantly...my driving record is perfect.....the instance I speak of in particular was when I had a van behind me and all of a sudden the van pulls over and there I am hangin in the breeze as the cruiser keeps barrelling straight ahead.....I could not see through the van and without the damn sirens.......I did not know he was there until he almost crashed my ass! As I said he was doing about 80....turns out he was in a hurry to be the 3rd cruiser at a roadside olympic tryout!!!

Almost time to get our fish on!!!

I think they do that(no siereen) if they are close to a crime in progress.. Don't want the bad guys hearing them coming .. I've had it happen to me also ..

The max speed limit out here is 45mph. they pull the same shiite.

the quads the beach cops drive do about 20mph. (I had to edit that. I have nothing against the police BF).

one can do 35-4omph on the sand

hehe

I hate that shiite, bunch of cowboys..., but they gotta job to do....

I'm off to the beach. outgoing strong for 4 hours.

This was not intended to be a cop bashing thread....just curious about the parameters involved in the use of sirens and what dictates using them or not using them! I would think if they are rushing somewhere it would be a matter of public safety that they have them on?

BigFish-

Didn't see this thread....

As was already posted it's a judgement call. They are used to clear traffic and warn vehicles and pedestrians of your approach. Hence, a crime in progress makes them dangerous. Generally in that situation you'll use it mommentarliy to clear the way.

Otherwise, I let it wail away. There is a huge amount of liability involved in responding to scenes. I always try to remember, How will this look in Federal Court if I kill someone? Better to have every light on and siren on high, I don't want that nightmare!

Having said that, I have to admit, we are some of the worst drivers........!
