Cutting 100% Tung(?)

Has anyone cut 100% Tung when using it as a sealer?

I've been using tung oil for a while now and have had good results. I cut with turps and add a splash of spar varnish. Works well.

Thank you.

Do you recommend a 60% Tung / 40% Turpentine mixture (and the splash of spar)?

I imagine I want to use an oil-based primer for Tung. Can you recommend a product?

Thank you again for the help.

I mix up a batch in a large pickle jar that goes like this: 12 oz. Tung, 8 oz. Turps and 4 oz. Spar Varnish. I put the drilled blanks in the jar and let them soak for an hour or two. I know I have seen all kinds of posts on the soak time, but this has worked for me and I haven't had any problems with changing the bouyancy of the lures etc. I then hang them to dry for several days and then use rattle can primer. You should probably stick with an oil based primer to stay compatible with the Tung oil. (Tung oil is a main ingredient in many oil based paints). After that you can put just about any finish, acrylic or otherwise, over that. I finish off with System Three epoxy.

Missed something....I use Rustoleum sandable primer, it's oil based, sands easily and takes a finish well.

I mixed up a batch in a 2.5 quart pickle jar: 3 parts Tung, 2 parts turpentine, 1 part Helmsman. I also added 3 capfuls of Japan Drier. I have a rock maple plug soaking in there now.

At some point I'm going to do a penetration & dry time test with these different concoctions and woods.

Actually, it's more like 22 posts asking questions -- I used the Search function to count them.

(just some friendly sarcasm back at ya'.)
