Yea what model? I've owned nothing but Jeeps since I could get my first loan. I started with a Jeep Comanche Sport Truck, 2 Wranglers, Grand Cherokee, Compass, and now drive a Commander.

jeep

I have a 2001 Cherokee, the last year of that square body style. I have to say it has its moments where it will drive you crazy but they have a cult like following for a reason. They are simple and fun. I take a train to work daily so the milage isn't an issue for me - I put about 7K a year on it. 80% of those miles are to fishing spots or with the dog, but yes its a gas hog.
What were you looking for and for what purpose? I think those are the biggest questions.

Just can't stop looking at them ,,, wrangler ,,unlimited ,, rubicon .. Just seems like they really stepped up there game .. I like the ground clearance .tire on the back ,, not underneath..the 15 mpg city is kind of lousy .. Just wondered how jeep owners liked them . 56 yrs. old ,, I havn't bought a foreign car yet .

My wife has a 2000 Grand Cherokee with 34K miles on it. Never again.
The brakes suck unless you buy aftermarket rotors.
The transmission sucks.
The weather seals around the doors keep separating from the body even though they were resealed and glued. This allows a lot of wind noise, then in the winter, moisture gets in and the inside of the windshield frosts over when parked overnight.
The gas mileage sucks (hers is the 4.0L six cylinder), but she doesn't put a lot of miles on it, so we overlook that issue.
I think the suspension is too "rolley" they should have used stiffer shocks.
Resale value sucks too. They don't want to give us much of anything even with such low mileage.
This was our second GC. First was a '97 (overall better vehicle) but that was totalled in an accident.
There are some nice features. It's very comfortable to drive. 4WD works very well. Very roomy.
Would I ever buy another? Absolutely not. Too many negatives for me.

They really do suck. I have a 2005. 6 cylinder MPG 14.5 city 18.5 highway. The lights flicker off and on at night and the airbag chime goes off every few weeks and lasts a couple of days. Had to replace both front window motors, and the alternator twice. I would never buy another one. My folks have a Toyota Highlander pretty impressive.

Oh yeah. Duke just reminded me. 34K miles and we've had to replace the alternator and water pump.

Eddy - you're thinking the Wrangler Style, right?

Fun to drive and move around in (less so on highway). Can go anywhere.

They leak (hard tops too)
They can be easily broken into
Mileage sucks
They like to dart from side to side
Little stuff breaks

But They Are Fun

Definitely see if you can rent one for a few days or week to see if it will work for you.

Tagger,

I also have been thinking of getting a jeep. The models that I like are 2000 to 2006. I was interested in the TJ model and the unlimited 2 door for the extra towing cap. Everytime I get the chance to ask an owner what kind of milage they see, they say 20-21 mpg. This is with a standard transmission 5 speed and 6 cyl motor. I'm wondering if the new 6 speed gets better than that.
I picked up a four wheeler and put a plow on it. I've had it for a couple years and thought if I had to register it why not buy a Jeep.

Hope this helps,
Mike

All I've owned are Jeeps....I had two Wranglers...Love them but not super practical, if I ever get another one it will be a 3rd car in the family. I have a 99 GC....176k milies on it. Its very comfy, roomey, but the brakes suck til you get to the 2005 models...which my wife has. Brakes better, but not at comfy and not as roomy. Seems like tons of blind spots in the new models too with bigger head rests, higher back seat, wider door jams...I don't think I'll buy another Jeep unless its a wrangler that I drive part time.

I have a 2002 with the 4.0 and I'm still getting 20 mpg highway, even after almost 230,000 miles.

Got aftermarket brake rotors the first time the stock rotors warped.

Had a tranny problem at 100,000. Nothing since.

Still doesn't burn a drop of oil between changes.

Every so often the turn signals go schizoid--banging on the steering wheel usually gets them working again

Other than that--been pretty reliable. Had to replace the tranny linkage last year. Alternator 5 years ago. Not much else--everything else is still original.

The new V-6 engines are gas hogs and IMO not as reliable as the old 4.0 straight 6. This is going to be my last Jeep. If they still made the straight 6 I might consider another one--the best thing about them always was that bomb-proof engine.

2006 Liberty Diesel.
It's a tank, 60K service, change the tranny fluid. Oil change every 10K,
fuel filter every 20K

2005 for the Grand Cherokee, 2006 for the Wrangler. None of the other current models ever had the straight 6. Sure on the Grand, not so sure on the Wrangler--could have been 2007.
