Massachusetts Herring Runs

This list of herring runs is made from the latest available state information. I recommend that you check with your local town or state officials before taking herring as these regulations do change frequently...

These runs represent two species of herring, Alewives (Alosa pseudoharengus) and Bluebacks (Alosa aestivalis). The runs are broken into two categories: State and Local. Runs under state control operate on the following rules:

1. Permit - Freshwater fishing permit required

2. Catching days - Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday

3. Daily catch limit - maximum of 25 per day 4. Gear restrictions - All herring must be caught with hand-held dip nets

Runs under local control are managed by the respective towns.
