Edge Sportfish 11-08-2004, 04:30 PM While I was down the Cape this fall, fishing with Bigfish, Slingah, and others, I kept thinking of a quote by Teddy Roosevelt that I thought really applied to the entire "Surf" fish or nothing- cult of dedicated beach pounders. I'm sure you'll all agree..
"This is why"
..Far better is to dare mighty things
To win glorious triumphs, even though checkered with failure
Than to take ranks with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much,
nor suffer much
Because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory, nor defeat.
G.L.
Yes... Bigfish's fishing career is most certianly checkered with failure.
:laughs: :gf: :hf1:

I just this minute finished adding a picture of Teddy to the section on Cuttyhunk in my new DVD -- It's a great image taken from an old bronze likeness. He use to love to fish the island for stripers around 1910...with his good friend William Howard Taft -- who was elected President shortly after one of their visits.
I'm also indebted to the old Rough Rider for his Nobel Peace Prize, award-winning efforts in mediating the end of the Russo-Japanese war; it brought about the release of my grandfather who had been a prisoner of war for over a year!
George, you've got to love someone who lived life to the fullist. At the time of his death in 1919 he said, "No man has had a happier life than I have led; a happier life in every way."
On October 27th next year we should celebrate his birthday the way we did Papa Hemingway's 100th-- this time you buy the pizza.

That's an interesting story - I'm assuming if it were not for that POW release, you would not be here. Was he in the Navy?
