View Full Version : jointed pikie lip replacement
Im rejuvinating a jointed pickie . ive removed the yellowed epoxy and paint
sanded and plan to spray it soon. the original lip/hardware is brass can anyone suggest a replacement lip ??
Bernzy 07-06-2005, 04:37 PM I wouldn't replace that lip. Use it. It looks like it has stood the test of time.
Never mess with a plugs MOJO. :hihi:
Bernzy
I dont think this one was ever fished! still had yellow drop of epoxy on a hook
so mojo is to come this FALL ! should I just look for a similar stainless??
moores lures has that exact lip. www.mooreslures.com thier site is confusing but if you call them they will know what your looking for.

If you don't want to use that lip I'll swap you an original stainless lip for it.
Bernzy
sure I can swap it, how do you want to do it?
Pops, do the swap with Bernzy for an original lip. The Moores lip is too big and would have to be ground down. Nobody makes a duplicate of the old CCB pikie lips which is a shame.

oh contraire. :hee:
we got the punch die set up,but not the bending yet. another project I gotta get back on. just too many things to do.
Pops, dont replace the lip , its a good one as stated above.

stripercrazy 07-07-2005, 11:22 PM pops, how would you wire the head peice of that pikie.theres no wrap like on the end peice. would you change the gromet and tail wrap it? thanks ed.
the wire going through the head section is folded/doubled back like an open wedge shape, leaving an angled "eye" to connect to the middle section....
you feed the wedge in from the front throught the lip...
livewhya 07-08-2005, 12:27 AM creek chub didn't make a 3 part pikie until later and it was plastic

stripercrazy 07-08-2005, 07:12 AM so if I cut the back wire loop, I'll be able to pull the wire out thru the lip?I've got some jointed pikies that need to be painted. thanks for your help.ed
stripercrazy 07-08-2005, 07:14 AM anyone change the hook holders with swevels? do they work better" thanks ed.
I picked up some stainless #16 wire at a welding supply.
Im going to prime then spray with white krylon .
whats the best way of sealing the lure ?
how many coats should I aim for before sealing ????
+ Im replacing the stirups with shwivels, means split rings or cutting the hooks
???
stripercrazy 07-08-2005, 09:20 PM if the factory or creek chub already sealed it, I was just going to prime and paint. in the head part with the wire folded/doubled back I wonder how hard it going to be to get the wire through the swevel, I'm thinking 3x strong split rings and 4x vmc hooks.I'm taking my pikie apart tonite and see what the inside of the hook holder thing looks like.alot of guys use boiled linseed oil or val oil to seal there plugs, I've never done it I'm just repeating what I've heard or been told.ed
stripercrazy 07-08-2005, 09:35 PM oh your sealing the paint, I'm going to try 2 ton epoxy.
how long does 2 ton take to dry ? does it yellow?
Bernzy 07-09-2005, 12:12 AM Without question, seal the plug before primer.
Bernzy
stripercrazy 07-09-2005, 08:21 AM its 5 min, yes I think it will yellow with time.I'm painting it a dark color. bernzy, thanks. I'll seal it first. prime and paint then I'll spray it with acrylic clear. :btu:
Jigman 07-09-2005, 09:02 AM how long does 2 ton take to dry ? does it yellow?
The 30 minute, 2 ton takes around 30 minutes to set up. It will still be tacky at this time. Usually need to let it sit for 24 hours before using the plug. I've used it on plugs in the past and not noticed any yellowing.
Jigman
2 ton sounds right .I'd hate to see it go yellow under the sunlight 3months after
refinishing it.
do you simply brush a mixture on like paint sect by sect???
stripercrazy 07-10-2005, 08:24 AM pops here's a needle from njtackle and a popper I found sealed with 2 ton, left the mojo on the popper
stripercrazy 07-10-2005, 08:26 AM pikie parts
stripercrazy 07-10-2005, 08:28 AM wire in head and hook holders
stripercrazy 07-10-2005, 08:30 AM got the pikie on e-bay looks like worm burn

i have swivels to replace the striups
not sure if I should go white or black?
Christian 07-10-2005, 08:19 PM what did you do to that awsome pikie?
thing looks perfect, ready to fish, in that picture.
it was yellow from old epoxy

Bernzy 07-13-2005, 10:21 PM Nice paint Pops. Lip is on its way !
Bernzy
now that you got all that old yellowing paint off of it, it should definately catch a ton more fish ;)
:rollem:
too each his own i guess.

what are you trying to say?
i'm saying that I wouldn't have touched that thing, and that I feel that the paint really doesn't make a difference in how it catches. I like how old plugs look.
Just my OPINION.
Everyone is free to do whatever they want.
:)
I personally hate old yellow epoxy on anything so...
are all your plugs one color ? or just bare wood?
I tried to keep it fairly original looking [ redhead & white body]
