View Full Version : Katrina benefit
JohnR 09-01-2005, 11:38 AM I am looking for ideas on whether / how we as a group can raise funds for the victims of Katrina. If we did raffle/auctions of donated items or just a fundraising campaing. We have some people with extended family and dear freinds down there that we have not heard from as of yet. We also have the option of working to raise money for Red Cross specifically for the victims of the Hurricane.
So I am opening this for discussion to see what you folks feel. These people down there are our fellow citizens and many have lost everything.
Thanks,
john
nightfighter 09-01-2005, 11:52 AM Count me in. Great idea. Gotta count our blessings.....
MakoMike 09-01-2005, 12:10 PM I'm in, let know how I can help.
Clammer 09-01-2005, 12:52 PM what ever ya all come up with I,m ///
especially with all the help coming from the rest of the world // WTF is America gonna wise up & take care of there own // F #$%^&* the rest of them :lossinit:
Bronko 09-01-2005, 12:56 PM I would think raffles or auctions would be the best way, but you could combine those two things with a Texas Hold Em tournament as well, make a night of it. People can bring food, bid on items, by raffle chances and play some cards as well. All proceeds to the victims of Katrina... Then the real maniacs could fish till dawn afterwards. :kewl:
Flaptail 09-01-2005, 01:01 PM what ever ya all come up with I,m ///
especially with all the help coming from the rest of the world // WTF is America gonna wise up & take care of there own // F #$%^&* the rest of them :lossinit:
Mike, you said a mouthful. What can we do to help?
BasicPatrick 09-01-2005, 01:21 PM John,
I vote for money being raised being donated to the Red Cross...
I vote for donated items raffled off...
a texas hold em tourney takes a bit to get the correct permits etc here in MA
I am willing to donate some hard to find items
The Dad Fisherman 09-01-2005, 01:45 PM If you are going to donate to the victims via the Red Cross make sure you make it crystal clear to them that it goes to the Victims.....We held a Bottle and Can drive w/ the Cub Scouts for the Red Cross after 9/11 to help out the victims, The boys raised $2600 for them.......and they used the money to buy a new Phone System for their office.
You have to make sure who-ever you donate the cash to is going to use it for its intended purpose.
And if can I'm willing to help out w/ anything you guys come up with.
I am in. Will donate plugs for raffle and some cash.
capesams 09-01-2005, 04:11 PM think I could find a rod blank or two..plug's new/used.etc.
Uncle Matt 09-01-2005, 04:47 PM Mac I may have an idea here that could work. Check your pm's.
Slipknot 09-01-2005, 05:38 PM Red cross gets my vote.
I will chip in cash
and I have a reel to add to the auction/raffle whatever you decide.
Bass Babe 09-01-2005, 05:49 PM My sister from New Orleans and her husband and 6 year old have no home and no jobs. They have a hatchback filled with a few posessions. They need to move elsewhere and find new jobs.
Maybe it's just being selfish, but I would rather see donations go directly to our friends and family members. I know that my sister and her family will not be going to a temporary shelter and standing in a line for food. They have a place to stay (her husband's grandfather's house -- with 25 other people), but they need to build an entirely new life. The Red Cross will not help them do this.
Just my $.02, and I'll be in on whatever is decided on.
Sweetwater 09-01-2005, 06:21 PM I think everyone should do whatever they can that is within their means to help the survivors of Katrina. There are a number of charities (especially the Red Cross) that you can make donations too.
I am a Methodist and am donating through our church's organization. You don't have to be a Methodist to donate (of course) so if you want to make sure your donations go to this very cause you can donate to The United Methodist Committee on Relief's (UMCOR).
You can make your donation online at:
http://www.methodistrelief.org/site/pp.asp?c=bhKNI4PHIpE&b=876335
The site also tells you what you can do to make "food buckets" for relief (which is something every one can do(.
mikecc 09-01-2005, 06:23 PM I can make a rod .
CS I Think I can find a few Blanks lying around for ya. :uhuh:
nightfighter 09-01-2005, 09:00 PM I can sympathize with BassBabe's point of view. Maybe we get a list of family/friends of S-B and go 50/50 with Red Cross/family. That way we know we have an impact on known families.
BigFish 09-01-2005, 09:36 PM Having just bought a house and with cash flow slow......it is tough.....but those folks need help and I will do what I can. I can whip up a bunch o' plugs for a raffle or what ever you guys think we should do! Maybe I can also find some other collectables I could part with to raise money. JohnR...let me/us know what the deal will be! :uhuh:
spence 09-01-2005, 09:46 PM Having just bought a house and with cash flow slow..
Whaaa, I'm a landowner and I don't have any money, Whaaaa :whackin:

MakoMike 09-02-2005, 08:58 AM I'd vote for giving whatever we raise to the salvation army, much more of their donations winds up witht he needy than the red cross. Don't you guys remember that during the tsunami crisis, the red cross had to set up a special fund, because a lot of people wouldn't donate to their general fund because so much of that money is wasted.
Fisherwoman 09-02-2005, 09:11 AM JohnR,we are in, let me know what you need. We can donate a trip or whatever, have a ton of gear also, so yes we are defiantly in no matter which way it gets donated. anyone have any idea how we could also donate clothing to the people down there. I am sure with all of us toghether we could put a tractor trailer full of clothes together, but not sure how to go about it? any idea's
Thanks Jules
JohnR 09-02-2005, 09:17 AM Thank you everyone - let's keep the discussion going through the day, make a hard determiniation this weekend and kick it off.
Thanks!
John
RIROCKHOUND 09-02-2005, 09:31 AM I'll throw a plug or something in to a raffle or auction...
Canalman 09-02-2005, 10:04 AM I'll donate plugs or whatever is needed.... or we could have some kind of tournament perhaps, if everyone donated some things for prizes and we charged I dunno... 40$ per person to enter, opened it to the public, prizes for the winners and proceeds to the charities in need.
I have also thought a team tournament might be a fun idea 4 man teams 150$ per team. Or... we could have the 1st annual S-B Wiffle Ball Charity tournament :kewl:.
Or.. jeeze I'm full of ideas today :hs: .... we could have a Tri-bass-alon, who can put waders and korkers on, change flashlight batteries in the dark and catch the biggest bass the fastest. :hs: :tooth: :smash:
justplugit 09-02-2005, 10:06 AM In. It would be nice to help take care of our own S/B family ,as well as helping a charity thats on the ground with a low expense/ help ratio.
Clogston29 09-02-2005, 10:07 AM I'll donate a plug or two. I don't make plugs but I have some "backups to backups" of plugs that are pretty sought after that I could spare for a good cause.
rwilhelm 09-02-2005, 10:15 AM A plug raffle sounds like a good idea. I am not a builder but I would throw some cash in.
Jimbo 09-02-2005, 12:54 PM Things are so sad there, you can bet anything done to help the people affected by hurricane Kartina will be appreciated. And don't forget to ask or remind your company, like I just did, if they would support matching donations and make a corporate contribution (happily they just approved both).
Tburg 09-02-2005, 02:16 PM Im In but just coming up with ideas is taking alot of time. Its a great Idea but if there are people that we can help now by sending them what we can its a start....We see the plight of those that stayed to ride the storm out on the TV every day, but there are juat as many if not more that left the coast and have no place to go back to. These people may be in areas that we may be able to get items to....
Bass Babe - Is there a way to send a care package to your Sister and the others. What can they use NOW... Food - Clothes - Shoes - Phone cards etc. Are there others in that area that are taking in people that were effected. If so what could they use and the best way to get items to them...
Not trying to Jack this thread but if we can do both lets do both...care packets fo those that we CAN get items to and a fund raiser for the Red Cross...
basswipe 09-02-2005, 03:26 PM Best bet is Redcross. You know where the money is going. The fraudulent charities have already shown up.
No matter what you do I'm in regardless.
JohnR 09-02-2005, 03:36 PM I think we work out the details this weekend, start the benefit and after 1 week, give what we have and say run a total of two weeks and give the rest at the end of two weeks. A split of some to a national org (RC or Salvation Army - I have heard that SA is more efficient than RC) and some to members of OUR S-B family - we have three families afffected that I am aware of, two found and one we are waiting to here from. A tourney would be nice but that would take too long and in a few weeks there will be a benefit tournament for a local soldier lost in Iraq - not a S-B tourney but a RI tourney that I want to assist on a bit.
Raider Ronnie 09-02-2005, 06:29 PM This has nothing to do with this thread and the fact that people here want to do something to help,
but I just can't help to think that,
Some of the most creative minds in this country are busy at this minute coming up with scams to swindle people out of money while making them think it's going to help down there!!!
Thats the American way!!!
Saltheart 09-06-2005, 07:59 AM I throw in two sets of canal ball jigs.
each of the 2 sets has 6 ------2 OZ , 6 ----3OZ and 6 ----4 OZ ball jigs.
Not much but I will be giving most of my $ donation to the Katrina relief through work where it will get doubles.
ThrowingTimber 09-07-2005, 06:49 PM Just Im up for donating some stuff.
I suggest a beer pong tournament :hihi: wee wee's my partner on this one
Please count me in on this John, as so many people have been devastated by this horrific event.
I thank God that my family made it through.

I thank God that my family made it through.
Bliz - glad to hear your family is OK - PM sent
greenmeanie 09-07-2005, 09:47 PM I also remember the Red Cross taking money from the donations. I also think Red Cross takes a percentage of the money donated for themselves.
I also heard the salvation army is the better route.
I'd vote for giving whatever we raise to the salvation army, much more of their donations winds up witht he needy than the red cross. Don't you guys remember that during the tsunami crisis, the red cross had to set up a special fund, because a lot of people wouldn't donate to their general fund because so much of that money is wasted.
The Dad Fisherman 09-08-2005, 07:21 AM I can float a couple of plugs your way....just let me know when you will need them by.
NaCl H2O 09-08-2005, 03:44 PM Will chip in cash via your paypal link (or anything else that's decided upon). Thanks for setting this up.
afterhours 09-12-2005, 08:16 AM john- don't know if this is the right place or not, but here are pics of my plug donations. polais type 7-1/2" 3oz black over gold, spookster 6" 3oz white with red head, squid 6" 2-1/4oz natural, and jr. spookster 5" 2oz in blonde with red throat.

Sweet - I am waiting for a few more pics so I can add them to the page (in dev.)
Anyone that is donating and has taken pictures or can, please post them here and I'll copy them onto the Katrina page - thanks...
Here are a few plugs to be donated for Katrina. Like the other fund raiser I decided to pull some from my stash in the living room. I figure these will do better than just putting up 5 plugs of mine. To builders whos' plugs I am donating please don't take this the wrong way. I am giving plugs that I would keep for myself but feel this is a better cause. There is a swimmer made by Tobias, a danny made by Capesams, a popper made by BigFish, a surfster made by me and a needle made by Bassmaster. Please bid these up as they didn't come easily.
Slipknot 09-12-2005, 07:05 PM Here is a Penn 60 long beach boat reel loaded with Big Game mono. Almost new condition.
Megabyte 09-13-2005, 07:12 PM John,
Raffle
JohnR picks 3 - 5 other members in good standing.
That group decides and over see's how the money is spent.
The group could decide to give money to S-B / Katrina families, could decide to give to RC or SA
My $ .02
Bruce
Bass Babe 09-14-2005, 07:26 AM Perhaps I'm a little scattered, but did this thing begin, and where do I send my money?
JohnR 09-14-2005, 08:30 AM OK - Katrina Page is up: http://www.striped-bass.com/katrina.shtmlRaffle will run thru Saturday September 24. Cash for tickets can be paid up until the Mass Leg at M&Ds, PayPal will end at noon on Friday September 23 and all checks / money orders must be in by Wednesday September 21 (these dates are necessary to make sure all funds are in and all raffle tickets assigned before drawing). Drawing will happen at the S-B 4 Leg Tourney at M&Ds ( capecodtackle.com ) on Saturday September 24.
Bassbabe - see the link above
Megabyte - that is a good idea
Thanks Everyone!
RIROCKHOUND 09-14-2005, 10:23 AM OK John; Camera is down right now;
I'm donating a black needle and a black stuby needle... I'll ship direct to whoever wins them. They arent the highest of quality looking, so you may want to combine them with other items (BUT, the do catch)
Please add one of our BL Bait Simulators to the mix as well as 1/2 dozen assorted Slammers.
Please let me know whatever else I can do to help.
Bass Babe 09-16-2005, 02:11 PM I was going to donate, but I think I'd disappoint rather than delight. I can paint a mean striper, but who wants, say, a Salvation Army end table with a fish on it when they can have a bunch of plugs? Not I, said the cat.
Canalman 09-16-2005, 02:14 PM John,
Did you get over to Dave's place the other night??? He was supposed to give you the plugs for the raffle.
-Dave
Squid kids Dad 09-16-2005, 07:13 PM Bass Babe I think that would do very welll....

Bass Babe 09-22-2005, 11:51 AM I agree. anty up bass babe :)
Okay. Set of 3 cutting boards, as of yet unfisnished, but started nonetheless. Winner no longer has to hear wife complain about him using the "good cutting board", as he will have his own. I'll meet and/or drop them off to the winner, as they're pretty heavy. They'll look a bit like this picture -- some bathroom furniture I painted previously.

Thant's pretty cool BB - well, the cutting boards, not the hamper :hihi: j/k ....
OK people, we have just under $500 raised so far. Seeing that we have over $1000 in prizes donated by people, I want to keep this going. PLEASE Pay Pal some more donations - I can't tell you how much cool stuff is already in and coming in on this raffle!!!!! Thanks!
i keep trying the paypal link on the katrina page and it doesn't seem to work...
JohnR 09-23-2005, 07:30 AM works for me when I test it and the others that have send, even as recent as this am... Could be filtered out by your content filters at work or a buggy browser... If you want, paypal thru e-mail to tech@linesiders.com
Thanks!
John
redcrbbr 09-23-2005, 10:20 AM John will i be able to buy tickets tomorrow at the cook out?
