Katrina benefit

I am looking for ideas on whether / how we as a group can raise funds for the victims of Katrina. If we did raffle/auctions of donated items or just a fundraising campaing. We have some people with extended family and dear freinds down there that we have not heard from as of yet. We also have the option of working to raise money for Red Cross specifically for the victims of the Hurricane.

So I am opening this for discussion to see what you folks feel. These people down there are our fellow citizens and many have lost everything.

Thanks,

john

I would think raffles or auctions would be the best way, but you could combine those two things with a Texas Hold Em tournament as well, make a night of it. People can bring food, bid on items, by raffle chances and play some cards as well. All proceeds to the victims of Katrina... Then the real maniacs could fish till dawn afterwards.

John,

I vote for money being raised being donated to the Red Cross...

I vote for donated items raffled off...

a texas hold em tourney takes a bit to get the correct permits etc here in MA

I am willing to donate some hard to find items

If you are going to donate to the victims via the Red Cross make sure you make it crystal clear to them that it goes to the Victims.....We held a Bottle and Can drive w/ the Cub Scouts for the Red Cross after 9/11 to help out the victims, The boys raised $2600 for them.......and they used the money to buy a new Phone System for their office.

You have to make sure who-ever you donate the cash to is going to use it for its intended purpose.

And if can I'm willing to help out w/ anything you guys come up with.

Red cross gets my vote.

I will chip in cash
and I have a reel to add to the auction/raffle whatever you decide.

The United States Constitution does not exist to grant you rights; those rights are inherent within you. Rather it exists to frame a limited government so that those natural rights can be exercised freely.

My sister from New Orleans and her husband and 6 year old have no home and no jobs. They have a hatchback filled with a few posessions. They need to move elsewhere and find new jobs.

Maybe it's just being selfish, but I would rather see donations go directly to our friends and family members. I know that my sister and her family will not be going to a temporary shelter and standing in a line for food. They have a place to stay (her husband's grandfather's house -- with 25 other people), but they need to build an entirely new life. The Red Cross will not help them do this.

Just my $.02, and I'll be in on whatever is decided on.

The worst day fishing is better than the best day working. ...Wait a minute, my work IS fishing. Sweet.

Hurricane Relief

I think everyone should do whatever they can that is within their means to help the survivors of Katrina. There are a number of charities (especially the Red Cross) that you can make donations too.

I am a Methodist and am donating through our church's organization. You don't have to be a Methodist to donate (of course) so if you want to make sure your donations go to this very cause you can donate to The United Methodist Committee on Relief's (UMCOR).

You can make your donation online at:

http://www.methodistrelief.org/site/...PHIpE&b=876335

The site also tells you what you can do to make "food buckets" for relief (which is something every one can do(.

Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.

I can sympathize with BassBabe's point of view. Maybe we get a list of family/friends of S-B and go 50/50 with Red Cross/family. That way we know we have an impact on known families.

I'd vote for giving whatever we raise to the salvation army, much more of their donations winds up witht he needy than the red cross. Don't you guys remember that during the tsunami crisis, the red cross had to set up a special fund, because a lot of people wouldn't donate to their general fund because so much of that money is wasted.

I'll donate plugs or whatever is needed.... or we could have some kind of tournament perhaps, if everyone donated some things for prizes and we charged I dunno... 40$ per person to enter, opened it to the public, prizes for the winners and proceeds to the charities in need.

I have also thought a team tournament might be a fun idea 4 man teams 150$ per team. Or... we could have the 1st annual S-B Wiffle Ball Charity tournament .

Or.. jeeze I'm full of ideas today .... we could have a Tri-bass-alon, who can put waders and korkers on, change flashlight batteries in the dark and catch the biggest bass the fastest.

In. It would be nice to help take care of our own S/B family ,as well as helping a charity thats on the ground with a low expense/ help ratio.

Donation

I'll donate a plug or two. I don't make plugs but I have some "backups to backups" of plugs that are pretty sought after that I could spare for a good cause.

Things are so sad there, you can bet anything done to help the people affected by hurricane Kartina will be appreciated. And don't forget to ask or remind your company, like I just did, if they would support matching donations and make a corporate contribution (happily they just approved both).

Im In but just coming up with ideas is taking alot of time. Its a great Idea but if there are people that we can help now by sending them what we can its a start....We see the plight of those that stayed to ride the storm out on the TV every day, but there are juat as many if not more that left the coast and have no place to go back to. These people may be in areas that we may be able to get items to....

Bass Babe - Is there a way to send a care package to your Sister and the others. What can they use NOW... Food - Clothes - Shoes - Phone cards etc. Are there others in that area that are taking in people that were effected. If so what could they use and the best way to get items to them...

Not trying to Jack this thread but if we can do both lets do both...care packets fo those that we CAN get items to and a fund raiser for the Red Cross...

I think we work out the details this weekend, start the benefit and after 1 week, give what we have and say run a total of two weeks and give the rest at the end of two weeks. A split of some to a national org (RC or Salvation Army - I have heard that SA is more efficient than RC) and some to members of OUR S-B family - we have three families afffected that I am aware of, two found and one we are waiting to here from. A tourney would be nice but that would take too long and in a few weeks there will be a benefit tournament for a local soldier lost in Iraq - not a S-B tourney but a RI tourney that I want to assist on a bit.
