I GREW UP ON THE EAST END OF LONG ISLAND- I CAUGHT THEM AS A KID IN SHALLOW WATER OFF MONTAUK IN THE COLD MONTHS - NEVER SAW ONE CAUGHT OFF THE BEACH........ WORST PART WAS I DO NOT CARRY A CAMERA....

My brother-in law and a good mutual friend in July 1963, North Truro. There was a time when cod off the beach didn't raise an eyebrow. I'm glad your boy got that fish! :jump:

When I was about 12 (1965) , I caught a cod off the west wall in mild weather. I remember people were surprised to see it. Unfortunately , it was the only one I ever caught from shore.

That's great. My buddy and I got a couple cod in June last year on storm shads from the surf on the north shore of MA, his was close to 15 lbs., mine was only 20". We got them right at dawn and it makes me wonder what we could have caught if we started bouncing the bottom earlier in the night. It just goes to show that you never know what you'll catch, one of my favorite things about surf fishing.
