When I started flyfishing and especially when I have been fishing the derby on the Vineyard I was told that trolling a fly was unacceptable and the fish should not count in any contest. I never coroborated thisd statement as being fact and just assumed it was correct. I read with great interest the YAK thread in the other forum and would appreciate any help with this. Because most guys who use a yak troll with the fly behind them. I see it all the time off Oregon Beach hwere a Yak guy will leave his fly line out and paddle like a you know what and have a great success rate hooking up. I am interested in buying a yak to fish with and not being able to troll a would not keep me from buying one, but it would dictate how I fish from one.

I don't understand why that would not be acceptable? I know I plan on trolling one, and tubes, and plugs, and anything else.. No boat fish count anyway, so why not  :hee:

Swimmer, maybe to a total purist it might be unacceptable, but I see a lot of guys troll. I keep line out when I move up on fish so I can pick up and cast fast. Sometimes you get lucky. Don't get to caught up in what somebody considers acceptable, just have fun.

it also sound like your talking about 2. different things. one is fly fishing the DERBY. an the outher is TROLING w/ your yak. :humpty:

I knew when I was told this, about trolling a fly line, it was in reference to guys in a boat circling a school and letting the line out as you make your approach and also so the flyfisherman/woman could start hauling as soon as the boat stopped. The person I was talking was disturb greatly because he said that it was not permitted in the derby or the IGFA. NEXTTONUM i appreciate you posting this. I wonder how many YAKKERS have weighed in fish in a tourney that caught them trolling?

SWIMMER, the IGFA has NOTHING to do w/ the Derby. CALL COOP, or Marthars Vinyard Rod an Gun. they have been setting the rules for this event for great number of years.
GOOD LUCK GOOD TYIN

I DON'T HAVE TO CALL COOP ABOUT THE DERBY. i HAVE BEEN FISHING THE DERBY SINCE 1973 WITH THE EXCEPTION OF FOUR YEARS IN BETWEEN. iF YOU NEED TO KNOW ANYTHING EMAIL THE DERBY COMMITTEE OF WHICH COOP IS PART OF. THE DERBY DOES FOLLOW ALL APPLICABLE I.G.F.A. RULES. I WILL RECONFIRM THIS AND POST THE REPLY MESSAGE.

This was my question to the derby chairman and his answer. I wonder how many people have weighed in a flyrod trolled fish, knowingly and unknowingly.

Frank-

You are correct.
