One of the guys I work with has been extremely helpful to me and my family throughout the years, and I would like to make him a few plugs for Xmas. He recentlypurchased a boat and after reading a recent article in one of his gazillion boating magazines, he would like to try trolling plugs,swimmers, large tubes, etc. next year.
I thought it would be nice to build a few large metal lips for him, but not sure really what size/style plug or what type of lip to use for trolling on a boat. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I got some large metal lips from Moore's Lures 715-356-6834. I had to modify a little but got one of the styles to work. I just copied the Gibbs trolling swimmer plug, but made plug larger and made the lip I got to look like the one they use only on a larger scale. You also have to make the lip slotted for the doubled over wire, it comes with just a hole. If you know a machinist he might be able to help you out with the slot:) or a small round file. I will paint these plugs a mackeral pattern when my painting skills get better. Hope this helps. Paul

And some slope to the head, a high or even central wire position, and some lead forward of midline. I'll try and post pictures latter.

The Gibbs GTS 3 .3/4 lure is hands down one of the best "old time" trolling lures I have tested.

2 years ago we put a bucket of old lures (ccbc/gibbs/etc) and headed out on an all nighter in the boat, trolling leaded wire around the rocks at __ _ _ _ _
and we also used eelskin rig's.
The GTS 3. 3/4 out fished every lure by a lot!
Out Come was something like 23 bass ... with one around 40. On the gibbs :bshake:

Other lures total around 14, Another night I will not forget, tossing glass eye

Here are two googoo eyes. Supposedly Cinto took a 73lb bass trolling one on wire. The biggest is 8 1/4"x 1 3/8" , the smaller 6 1/8" x 1 1/4". Yes, those are screw eyes. The line tie is central. I think they are pine. If they are weighted it must be in the nose since I cant see a weight hole in the belly.

Here is a smaller Gibbs and a J Plug (which is an excellent trolling plug for Stripers in its own right). The J plugs usually come with a big
single hook. There was an OnTheWater episode where they were using them at Sow and Pigs.

Yes. With the little plastic yellow eyes that fall out. But I'm a little unclear about the history of that company. Was "lupo" a different manufacturer than the original Danny with the decal/painted eyes? If so, are the plugs different in subtle ways? I know that the current Danny clones (Gibbs and Beachmaster) are weighted slightly differently than the "lupo" Dannys I own and the big ones have slight differences in the lips, but I don't have any early Dannys to compare to the plastic eye ones.

well! I've been told them boy's down LI. way all lived on the same street..so who made what first and who copied[borrowed] who's shape's will alway's be told differently every time you hear the story..I think I'm up to 4 different versions now.BUT I think lupo was the youngest of the group sooooo I'll let that give you hint.

the swimmer that you made for the swap would be perfect, just make it a lot longer, and double belly hooks. i made one of mine for a boat guy, and i threw a couple shots of lead in it to give it some help diving, and it ended up working great. good luck.

I like the shape on those guys. I don't own a boat, but here's a couple of trolling plugs I made for Cap that I use to mate for in Orient Point...

MM. That's kinda freaky. I have never seen those plugs of yours before, and my blue slope head has an almost identical shape to yours:shocked: .
Thanks for the paint compliments guys. Believe it or not..all rattle cans. I think I have reached my creativity peak with the cans, running out of tricks. Hopefully an airbrush will be under the tree for Xmas, or soon after.

what is up is that this thread is from 2005 and now the guy is selling his plugs in shops, a lot of guys do this same thing. The internet has decreased to learning curve.

Yes there is a JNSKI plug company out of NY. Pretty nice looking plugs, although I got one of his danny plugs and I didn't like its action at all, I think the lip was too small for the plug and it came in straight on the retrieve. I have heard some good things about his plugs.
