After reading pauls post below I thought I would ask.. For me I spent about $6000 to fish last summer between gas and incidntals. The gas part was around half that . When you look at it its really alot. Fishing six out of seven nights a week from may thru november adds up.If you add up the plugs, bait, terminal tackel, line , trips to the block etc... You would be amazed at what it costs to fish a season.

For married guys it certainly is tough explaining that:hihi: and then giving the wife a hard time for blowing a couple hundred at the mall:p :p

This year alone before I even start I am commited to a week on cutty in june so, I already spent $600 before making a cast....Oh forgot to include the new boat..hehehe

I did the survey at the Rissa show and this question was on it. I tried to add it up and I couldn't believe how much it really costs. Gas alone kills me. At least $30. everytrip in gas. Then usually a dozen eels and so on.

I am fool enough to add it up at the end of the year. Runs between $15,000 and $20,000 a year. Mighty expensive fish!

If I added it up and my wife found out, boy would I be in trouble. Gas alone for one trip to Maine will be $75 bucks this year at least. That does'nt include Cutty and Montauk...

Between plugs, gas and terminal tackle, alot. But here's the thing,
it's a completely irrelevant question. I'm more than happy to spend lots of money of fishing stuff, it's alot cheaper than a wife !

Let's forget about the cost of the boat and direct maintenance. Slip fee, 500 +/- gallons of gas per month (*7 ), 10 # of eels per week plus 10 # in the basement for back-up, Spros, Gamas, Seaguar, gotta run all of 15k. Thankfully I have lots of help to pay for this and fish as much on my buddy's boat.

Fish cost a fortune
Two Virginia rednecks go on a fishing trip. They rent all the equipment - the reels, the rods, the wading suits, the rowboat, the car, and even a cabin in the woods. I mean they spend a fortune!

The first day they go fishing, but they don't catch anything. The same thing happens on the second day, and on the third day. It goes on like this until finally, on the last day of their vacation, one of the men catches a fish.

As they're driving home they're really depressed. One guy turns to the other and says, "Do you realise that this one lousy fish we caught cost us fifteen hundred bucks?"

The other guy says, "Wow! Then it's a good thing we didn't catch any more!"

This year it should run about 40 a trip and I plan on atleast on trip a week, and I devide that by say three other guys (gas ain't free) and it ends up being pretty good. BUT when I decide to go up the river and out to cutty hunk it gets to be about double that

By any means necessary :btu:

Its cheaper that souping up lil rice burners, tweaking them within an inch of their lives and racing down Harris Ave at full tilt :hf1:

luckily Im independantly wealthy . I have never tried to calculate cost . Its what I like to do and will spend what ever it costs . I never bother my wife on what she spends ... she works .
gas is now a big part of my expenses I dont like . thank god I dont use a boat anymore . traveling is the biggest cost for me . every where I fish isnt here so it costs time and money . eels will be going up maybe more than gas before it is all said and done .
If I ever calculated I might be amazed ! good thing I cant read , write or arithmatic things . its better than pissing it away ....been there done that . but it feels good

Nothin for gas, I can walk 20 seconds and be at the waters edge. I tend to spend a little bit of cake on plugs to make up for it though.

I have no idea, and if I think about it I will be selling the boat in short order!!

If I fish Vineyard Sound, which I do 90% of th time, I spend this year about $60 gas, and another $15 in the truck, thats $75 before I even get started!!
X 3 times a week= $225 X 8 weeks= $1800 gas alone for this season!! @ $3.00 a gal.

Now add all the tackle, bait, 2 stroke oil, ect ect...... It only spells one thing if my wife finds out "Divorce"

cost of fishing?
1)Boat 30,000/ 10= $3,000/ year
2) rods and reels 3700/5= $740/ year
3) Fuel 1300galx3.25= $4225
4) marina fees $3200
5) tackle ? $500
6) food and drink $500
7)bait $1200
8)missed work ????
Total cost= who cares, my wife can't add that high, and my kids like state colleges!!!

"uffah!!"

To cut cost this season, I'll just start Long Lineing. So if you see my soda bottles out there, please leave them alone.

I prefer to ask myself....what is this season worth as opposed to its cost! High fuel costs or no I am going to be fishing as much as last season if not more! There is no way in Hell I am letting the cost of a gallon of gas short change my fishing season! Its what I do....its what I love and I am going to fish my a$$ off!:ss:

Gonna have to guess that this season will run me....over $5,000.00! Oh.....also the new sandsled so there is $22,000.00 more. 3 new rods, new waders, monthly trips to Cutty for 2 nights a whack from June through October, driving back and forth from the Cape once a week from June to October, Race sticker.......oh who cares....its only money and it will do me no good after I am dead!

ThrowingTimber

hmmmm this got me thinking... lets see.. California, Cutty, Block, Cape...Hotel, and rental fees.. Ferry tickets...rods.. reels.. eels... food... h20....cigs... monster energy drinks... and local fishing 5-6 nights a week.. at least 120+miles or so round trip lets say gas at 2$ a gallon...Conservative estimate.. If I was married.. I'd be divorced :hihi:

BigFish
04-21-2006, 06:38 AM
Vic...don't get married! You save all the money you would spend on a Wedding and Honeymoon and then you save all the money you would have spent on a huge, costly and drawnout divorce.....so you will be way ahead of the game......when you think about it like that!:jump1:

not too much since i already have almost all the gear i'll ever need 'cept a new rod or two, another vs, couple of miles of pp, trips to cutty, bi, and m, and lots of gas. my boat won't see water this year unless it's raining on it.

Started fishing around 1949 and have never even thought of adding up the cost of a season. That's a scary thought even. Had I done so, I'd probably be playing golf by now.

Hmmm, let's see.

Used bike, $50 at a yard sale.

Bike basket, $40 at Benny's.

Got plenty of lead already. Maybe I'll spend another 50 clams on rubber.

Got plenty of plugs.

Got a basement full of rods and reels, plus about 6 bulk spools of various kinds of line.

Snaps, swivels, replacement hooks, leader material---got plenty of all of that.

Load the bike onto the truck, 25 cents worth of gas to get to the Run, and most of that from starting her up..

Looks like I can swing this summer's gas prices :kewl:
