Female: Ella ( could listen to her all day), Natalie Merchant, Janis, and my all time favorite, Etta James
ProfessorM 03-12-2007, 12:03 PM Well here you got me. I am no expert. 80% of the stuff I listen to has no singin. Hell I like the Chairman of the Board,Doc Watson, and Ted Nugent.
Backbeach Jake 03-12-2007, 05:57 PM The greatest Male voice of all time, hands down has to be Freddie Mercury.
Female, maybe Linda Ronstadt.
Raider Ronnie 03-12-2007, 06:07 PM you want most popular or most talented ?

olivia newton John
whitney houston

who sucks = mick jagger
EricW 03-12-2007, 07:11 PM These suck - Joe Cocker, the guy who sang for canned heat, Janis Joplin, Moby (although I like him) robert plant, Mick Jagger, paul kantner, any of the monkees, Eric Johson,
Good singers - Tony Bennet (don't really listen to, but can sing), Marcy levy (marcella detroit) or whatever she goes by lately, Enya , celine dion.
I don't listen to any in the second group, I guess what I call good bands can't sing?
Mike P 03-12-2007, 07:24 PM Don't laugh, but McCartney had a great set of pipes. He could sing silly love songs, but listen to him wail on stuff like Helter Skelter and Oh, Darlin' :humpty: Another one from the "gimmee a break" wing of rock music was Gary Puckett of the old Union Gap--their music sucked :yak6: but the guy had a great voice.
David Clayton Thomas of Blood Sweat and Tears :uhuh:
And please--don't embarass most of the rock singers by comparing them to even an average jazz artist :hs:
Bigcat 03-12-2007, 08:12 PM The late and great Roy Orbison my favorite.:tm:
The rest pickem.
crash 03-12-2007, 08:33 PM My favorite rock singer is Trent Reznor, one of the few singers who can keep a tone while screaming. Amy Lee of Evanescence has a great voice and is great to look at, but is inconsistant. Bill Withers' voice always stops me while I'm skipping through the radio, has some good ones on youtube as well. Freddie Mercury has an awesome voice, as does the lead singer from ACDC(can't remember his name right now)
I grew up in the late eighty's and there wasn't any decent music that was new when I was a kid, and the rock scene wasn't all that impressive when I was in high school(grunge:huh:) so I listen to a pretty broad spectrum of music.
Raider Ronnie 03-12-2007, 08:37 PM [QUOTE=Backbeach Jake;473176]The greatest Male voice of all time, hands down has to be Freddie Mercury.
An opera singer doing rock & roll !

Saltheart 03-13-2007, 08:05 AM For a beautiful voice , I like Dolly Parton. every time I say that people say i like her boobs but in fact i don't like big boobs. However , i do think she has a beautiful voice.
now , with so many artists from all over the world and all the different styles , etc , there are some beautiful vocal acts out there.
i also like Enya.
RIJIMMY 03-13-2007, 08:10 AM I'll add Greg Allman, Eddie Vedder, and Bon Scott
As far as Morrison, listen to Crystal Ship, I really think he is a good singer
Bronko 03-13-2007, 10:05 AM Sarah McLachlan:)

The Dolly brought clairity to me, if their singing like they enjoy it it just sounds better. dont care for anyone that acts like it hurts or its a job.
that goes for any style, etc. must be why i like the sound of steel drums. dont worry be happy.
basswipe 03-13-2007, 06:03 PM I in now way like country music in any form but......probably the most "beautiful" voice by far is Alison Krauss. She really does have an incredible voice.Listen to her with Union Station, incredible to say the least.Would love to hear her do a Maiden song:eek5: .

Katie 03-13-2007, 08:46 PM Oooh boy, this one has made me think..
For this one it's gotta be Steve Perry (HANDS DOWN!) , lead singer of Journey (one of my favorites). Man, I think he's got that perfect singing voice for any rock song. He can sing any crappy song and it will sound golden to me! Close second is Freddie Mercury of Queen... another unbelievable voice. I don't think there is anyone that can take some notes as high has he does....phew!
For other voices... Anyone ever heard Josh Groban? I don't listen to him, but my mom and sister do, and he has a pretty impressive voice.
Then for a voice of today - if you wanna call it that.
Brandon Boyd- Lead singer of Incubus, i've become a fan of them lately with the release of " Dig " and their other songs like " Drive " and " Which You Were Here " (btw not a PF cover)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrzmOHNAkiI - Drive
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Z8cnXVGm1I - Dig

eelman 03-14-2007, 05:07 AM Surprised no one mentioned my favorite...Paul Rodgers (Bad Company) The guy is awesome.I am all over the place with this stuff cause I like everything depending on mood.
Ronnie James Dio..
James Taylor..
Female..this is more difficult for me I have alot I like...But I like -Anita Baker, Susan Tedeschi
Pete_G 03-14-2007, 07:28 AM I in now way like country music in any form but......probably the most "beautiful" voice by far is Alison Krauss. She really does have an incredible voice.Listen to her with Union Station, incredible to say the least.Would love to hear her do a Maiden song:eek5: .
I agree. She's raised the bar for accuracy, clarity, tone, range, and everything else.
RIJIMMY 03-14-2007, 09:24 AM cant beleive I forgot Nat King Cole, he is my all time favorite, thansk for the reminder.
I have to agree w/Spence and Katie, I always liked Steve Perry, even in the sappy crap.
taJon 03-14-2007, 01:05 PM freddie mercury for sure, but what about Pavarati? Isn't he regaurded as one of the best of all time...........
for more metal bands, Maynard from tool comes to mind.

TheSpecialist 03-14-2007, 07:58 PM Here's a second vote for Jon BonJovi, Although The Eagles as a group have amazing vocals,
Females: Mariah Carey has the pipes to beat, too bad she went so ghetto
Katie 03-14-2007, 08:37 PM I have a friend that looks almost exact to steve perry, its scary..
The Iceman 6 03-15-2007, 07:53 AM I think we have to throw Geddy Lee from Rush into the mix here...
Ice
ProfessorM 03-15-2007, 09:41 AM Deep Purple's lead singer, can't remember his name at this moment, had a hell of a voice too.
The Dad Fisherman 03-15-2007, 10:22 AM Deep Purple's lead singer, can't remember his name at this moment, had a hell of a voice too.
Ian Gillian...he was also Jesus Christ in Jesus Christ Superstar.
For singers that really put feeling into there vocals I like Joe Cocker, Ray Charles and Janis Joplin. they sing it like it MEANS something to them
For Front men I like Roger Daltry, Steven Tyler, Robert Plant, Eddie Vetter and Micheal Stipe......Not technically the best but I think there voices are what make there music what it is.
The absolute Best voice around.......Aretha...my god when that woman sings it is truly Amazing.
Got to also give some Kudos to Whitney Houston (Pre-Bobby Brown) she had a spectacular voice.....listen to her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner if you doubt that.
The Iceman 6 03-15-2007, 03:40 PM "For singers that really put feeling into there vocals I like Joe Cocker, Ray Charles and Janis Joplin. they sing it like it MEANS something to them"
Gonna have to throw Chris Robinson in that category DF
mosholu 03-15-2007, 06:57 PM For male vocalist you should check out Jeff Buckley's Grace. The closest I could compare him to would be early Van. Jimmy Page said it was his favorite CD of the 90s.
For females the guy who mentioned Ella hit the nail right on the head. Otherwise for pop stuff Linda Ronstadt is pretty amazing.

To die at 30.

Ian Gillian
Definitely. Best song was still "Child in Time".
1968?
Dio is up there. Robert Plant.
Amy Lee from Evanescance & Jewel
I actually saw Jewel the fist time she ever played in Boston.
Chris Cornell
I'll think of more............
Eddie Vedder? Good first album. Not groundbreaking, not spectacular, just good. I wish he just shut up after that. But he can't.
Green River and Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone. Much better.
And my pick for the SSB will always be Rene Rancourt.
The Eagles.
All of them.
Collectively.
Missed the previous post.
I'll sleep when I'm dead.

5 String Bass 03-16-2007, 11:53 PM I fricken love metal.
Dio, Ian Gillian, Bruce #^&#^&#^&#^&enson, Rob Halford,Geoff Tate to name a few...
incredible vocal groups: as mentioned, The Eagles, Doobie Bros. and Yes were amazing.
Female singers: Sarah Vaughn was awesome and Tori Amos is just ridiculously talented.

Can I add one to the Website waiting to happen.....
Michelle Branch.
Black Crowes were fantastic.
Another one I saw on Lansdowne St.(Before Soundgarden.)
April or May 1990. I remember that one because I was still 20.
They only checked the last two digits of my ID.
First show I ever got to drink at.
ThomCat 03-19-2007, 06:29 AM For a distinctive voice Rod Stewart is likely as recognizable as most any. With the Faces he could kick it with anybody and as a showman he could out "Mick Jagger" Mick Jagger. As for versitality he could rock, sing a love song or the blues and even touched on (unfortunately) disco. His 4 American Song Book albums are great although he should probably have stopped at two. Gotta give him credit for being able to survive the many turns in music over almost 40 years along with many bottles of brandy and blondes.
clumber 03-19-2007, 06:42 AM A few I didnt see...
Female-
-Joni Mitchell
-Sandy Denny
-Emmylou Harris (best backing vocals)
-Natalie Merchant
Non-Female-
-Howlin' Wolf
-Gram Parsons
-Jon Anderson (Yes)
-new entry - Jim James (My Morning Jacket)
Pete_G 03-19-2007, 10:57 AM Amy Lee from Evanescance & Jewel
I actually saw Jewel the fist time she ever played in Boston.
I caught her when she was opening for Bob Dylan at the Strand in Providence one year, before she hit it big.
Weird to think of Dylan in a tiny venue like that.
Jewel was the bonus though. I was jammed up against the stage looking up. Jewel was sporting her typical short skirt. What a show.
stripersnipr 03-19-2007, 12:41 PM Rikki Lee Jones..........the stuff she did with Dr. John really highlighted her voice in contrast to his.
redneck24 03-20-2007, 05:43 AM male- geoff tate

Katie....funny you should mention it....Not what I would normally listen to but a friend of mine had tickets (and no one to go with)to see him a Mohegan a couple weeks ago and so I went. Again not my type of music but he does have a strong voice for sure!
Freddie M. definately had a voice!
I dont know what it is but Bob Seger's got that "sexy smoldering" tone that I just cant resist...ooh if I ever met him and he spoke to me I would probably faint...;) :topic:
Heck I know there is more but I just lost my train of thought!

DF, I"ll have to get your adress as I've seen them 3 years ago when they played that famous NYC stand, Friday, March 25 which happened to be Good Friday and more importanlty our anniversarry - what a show. Then went Saturday which rocked, these two shows were nothing compared to their Easter Sunday Show - best version of MMS ever recorded live - 19 freakin' jamming minutes. I'll send them to you DF, 3 NYC shows that will free your mind. Love the Crowes......Send me an IM...

I got dragged to Edwin McCain. He was OK.
Jewel was the opener. Never even heard of her until then.
I was impressed. Not just easy on the eyes. No backup band.
Axis?
I saw Dylan once. Opened for the Dead at Highgate,VT
5 shows until "The End?
1995?
I left during his set to get more beer. I was the guy in the black T-shirt at that show.
Left Highgate went straight to Laconia.
That was one long f'n week.
I still have one unripped intact ticket for that show.
The last tour of Jerry Garcia.

I agree. I'm sure his voice rubs some the wrong way, but it works for me. His solo album was pretty solid. Different, but good.
Cymbal Rush (live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4DTuDllIkM)
There really aren't any weak Radiohead albums, except maybe Pablo Honey. OK Computer and Hail to the Thief are probably my favorites, but even after all this time my favorite Radiohead album tends to vary month to month...
Lots of nice unreleased tracks on Limewire and other services as well as an impressive collection of live footage on YouTube.
