I love that sound this time of year!!

Last year, 'round this time, maybe later, I was working the mid-shift. Around 0200, pulled into the local parking lot, window down (Real warm that night) and heard them. Turned the car off and sat a listened to them for about 1/2 hour. Partner pulls in and asks what I'm doing so I tell him. To this day, he STILL thinks I'm nuts (Although he is right)

Very peaceful after a long winter. Brings everything into perspective and lets you know that the fishing is not that far off! I love it!!!

i've delved into that phenomenon on numerous occasions
Link....and it's the equivalent of budhist monks chanting
in a temple... as the tree frogs begin an echo melody
that... kind of ricochets off the origional reverberations
of the third kind. i know what you mean.

I went outside to my Jeep last night around 9. It was a veritable peeper symphony. Beautiful early spring night, clear sky, crescent moon, and one lone coyote howling in the woods behind the house. I had to just stand still for a few minutes and drink it all in.

Man, this sure beats the hell out of living on Long Island :humpty:

Had to dig up the peeper threads from past years to check out the dates. First night I have heard the symphony this year. Right on schedule.

What are Peepers?

nightfighter
03-29-2009, 03:41 PM
The spring peeper is a small species, attaining an adult size between 0.75 inches (19 mm) and 1 inch (25 mm) long. They have a dark cross on their backs roughly in the shape of an "X" (thus the Latin name crucifer, for cross)[1], though sometimes the marking may be indistinct. The color variations of the P. crucifer are mostly tan, brown, olive green, and gray. Females are lighter-colored, while males are slightly smaller and usually have dark throats. This frog has a vocal sac located by its throat, which expands and deflates like a balloon to create a short and distinct peeping sound. Only males have the ability to make this loud high-pitched noise, and they use it to attract mates. This creature lives in wetlands, marshes, and pond or swamp regions in order to support the aquatic environment the larvae need. The Spring Peeper breeds between the months of March to June, and deposits around 900 eggs that are hidden under vegetation or debris at the water base. After hatching, they transform into frogs and are ready to leave the water in about eight weeks.

When the peeps get in full swing , take a walk at night on the bog outside my backdoor it's freaky, no BS even without a couple of wobbly pops it's a wickid pissa experience . Next Sat. night come on down and feel what we feel during this early Spring season ,I even think the ECHO and REVERB adds to it .

You gotta get out of downtown more often.

Lived in West Mansfield for 10 years, as far out of town as you could get. 7 houses on one side of the street, forests on the other side and at the end.

Knew the sound, just didn't know what made it.

We've been hearing them for over a week now. I almost ran one over late thursday night as I was driving home. I don't mind the noise too much, but I hate having them hopping all over my yard and taking up residence in my pool all summer. I scooped 4 of them off the pool cover over the weekend and there was already an egg sack floating on top of the cover.

I might have to take Spence's advice and do something to the little pond next door.

The peepers, when they get a chorus going, sound like the giant ants in that old sci-fi movie "THEM".

As of cane toads, I am thankful we don't have that problem anywhere in the US, since they are poisonous to anything that "tries" to eat them.

I just got in from having a cigar and glass of Dansk outside and the things were peepin' up a storm. I don't mind the sound so much as the things invading my lawn and pool every spring. They sound just like their name implies.

Sounds I love:

Peepers
Osprey screeching over a creek filled with splashing herring.
Loons on Echo Lake
The cacophony of sounds emanating from the Costa Rican rainforest
Herring gulls
Bullfrogs bellowing in the night
Crashing surf
Screaming drag
Water filling my snorkel
The clanging of bell buoys on a foggy night
The alarm clock – when it’s time to go fishing/diving

Sounds I hate:

Airplanes
Traffic
ATVs
Leaf Blowers
Assorted industrial sounds
Bell buoys that have replaced their bells with an electronic noise that sounds like you’ve left your car door open
Alarm clock when it’s time to go to work

FishermanTim

Some sounds I like:

The sound of a fish hitting a surface lure, be it fresh or salt water.

When a small plane flies over on a quiet day. It's that light droning sound that hits me.

The call of a mocking bird. They can and will mimic any sound that cathces their ear. I once heard one mimic a cat meow on the tip-top of a maple tree, or another time when I heard one mimic a lawnmower.

one last favorite sound (which I do miss here at work) was our old fax machine. When a fax was coming in, it made the identical sound as the channel marker at the entrance to Duxbury Bay. I could here this sound wafting across the bay on a foggy night while fishing the Powderpoint Bridge. The fax machine would pop that memeory into my head all year long, and I loved it.

Sound that I hate Traffic and automobile noises, sirens, sreeching tires, etc....
Loud radios playing unintelligible rap music, cause it really all does sound exactly the same, and it's generally junk music to begin with.
Personally, I hate drunks, no matter what I am doing. I grew up with an alcoholic dad (who did quit) and I don't need to relive those memories EVER.

also for me it is the song from robins siting high in a tree as the sun is getting low in the sky. Sound is so spring.
I listened last nite when i got home from work but no peepers yet in my neck of the swampy woods although with all this rain they probably drowned.

and the flying (eat bugs out of the air) birds arrive.

keep in mind that the skeeters have up to ten disease's now
adequate vitamin B1 in your diet deters them

as they TASTE your skin before dippin the straw for blood
