Is a castnet effective for getting bunker as well? ProfessorM 04-30-2007, 04:00 PM In mass I think that is all that is allowed and only up to a certain size too. I do not think they allow gill nets for moss bunker anymore. We used to use them years ago in Monument Beach. But I am wrong every day so maybe someone else can verify. P. fishpoopoo 04-30-2007, 04:06 PM there are usually reports of menhaden and very large bass on the north shore of long island by late march. strictly catch and release fishery. MakoMike 04-30-2007, 04:11 PM I can't wait to get out there this weekend. Is a castnet effective for getting bunker as well? Yes, if its the right mesh and weight. parker23 04-30-2007, 05:32 PM There are absolutly no menhaden, bunker, moss bunker or pogies, north of the mason dixon line. Stripers do not eat menhaden, they make them sick. Stripers like shrimp, crabs and worms, very low fat diet. Hence, the skinny bass we call keepers. Menhaden are best suited for reduction, rendering desireable consumer products. Please do not feed menhaden to Striped Bass. Thank you, A-- Bait. westhavendave 04-30-2007, 08:50 PM They actually wintered over in western Long Island Sound this year on the CT side. First time in my 47 y.o. memory that has occurred. EricM 05-01-2007, 04:14 PM Any theories for why they might have wintered over in the western LI Sound? WoodyCT 05-01-2007, 07:51 PM ...it was the mild fall and early winter? Remember the shirt sleeve weather in January? Maybe they liked the conditions and hung around, only to be trapped when the freeze set in in Feb.? Just a thought. fishaholic18 05-01-2007, 10:11 PM They winter over in certain places every year...Seen it myself....Bass hate them though....http://www.world-of-smilies.com/html/images/smilies/gewalt/d066.gif EricM 05-03-2007, 12:42 PM Thanks guys, much appreciate your thoughts! teezer 05-03-2007, 05:19 PM can't wait jimmy z 05-03-2007, 05:30 PM They actually wintered over in western Long Island Sound this year on the CT side.
