View Full Version : The Habs Fall Classic - Friday, October 10th
Crafty Angler 09-08-2008, 01:21 PM I just got off the phone with my friend Komes, the owner of Flo's Clam Shack, and we discussed the Friday night Meet and Greet at Flo's.
Here's the deal. The Habs runs from 17:00 hours (that's 5:00 PM) Friday night to 09:00 hours (9:00 AM)Sunday morning. We will have people traveling to Newport from far away destinations (being a Newporter, far away means off the island) and may want dinner before heading out.
Komes will reserve the deck and outside porches for us if we have 40 people or so, and we can do chowder and clamcakes for a flat rate for the group and on Fridays Flo's does a Prime Rib Special anyway soooo... for 19.95 (perhaps less)you'll be able to get chowder, clamcakes and a prime rib dinner for a max of 19.95 - plus tip, of course, for the very lovely Lisa who runs the second floor bar and restaurant.
Anyhoo - you can do the Meet and Greet at Flo's if you're traveling, get a excellent soup-to-nuts dinner, the beverage of your choice and a chance to chew the fat with your fellow contestants.
:point::point::point:As a special bonus, I'm going to distribute a detailed map of all of Joe's favorite spots on the island to the first 25 people who say "I'm In", complete with tide chart. :rotflmao::rotflmao::rotflmao:
JUST KIDDING, JOE :fishslap::fishslap::fishslap:
So if you plan on attending the Meet and Greet at Flo's, please respond with "I'm In" to give me a number of people I can pass along to Lisa. If we get 40 or so we'll be able to reserve the second floor deck that overlooks Easton's Point and The Cliff Walk just for The Habs entrants only that way.
If you can't make it for one reason or another, that's okay, we just need to get a feel for how many will be there.
Thanks you guys, you're the best -

jim sylvester 09-08-2008, 04:43 PM I'm in
see you there
anyone talk to Jess and John Jr?
jim sylvester 09-08-2008, 05:54 PM john,
can we make this a sticky?
jbuck 09-08-2008, 07:08 PM anyone talk to Jess and John Jr?
Yes Jim, Joe has been in touch with them. They like the idea.
Jeff
BigFish 09-08-2008, 07:21 PM Jim there already is a sticky. Maybe this can just be added to it?
tynan19 09-08-2008, 08:58 PM Put me down for two.
Crafty Angler 09-08-2008, 09:45 PM Jim there already is a sticky. Maybe this can just be added to it?
Joe and I talked about it and figured the best way to get a Flo's count was to make it a separate thred so we could keep track of the numbers without confusing it with the overall contest thread.
When I talked to Lisa later this afternoon she also brought up the point that if people are coming from NY, CT, NJ and some parts of MA, the trip could be long enough with traffic so they might not be able to make it on time if they're working a full Friday. Good point.
Lisa's pretty excited about it too - she told me she knew John and Jess from Flo's - and they both loved it and spent a good amount of time there. She also told me how much she liked Senor Habs and how shocked and saddened she was by the loss. You know, the more people you talk to, the more you realize how special a guy he was to a lot of people.
For you guys not familiar with the Clam Shack, it's a bona fide locals' hangout with great seafood. You'll see all the SWE guys there at any given time like Iron Mike, Pete, Robbie, Earl, et al. If you're lucky you may also experience a wild Greek sighting - King Clam himself :hihi:
Yeah, I know, I'm sounding like a shill but it's always the first place our out of town family wants to go when they come to Newport. 'Nuff said.
Crafty Angler 09-08-2008, 10:18 PM Okay, might as well start a head count, I guess.
So far we've got:
BassDawg - 1
Jim Sylvester - 1
tynan19 - 2
Mr and Mrs Crafty - 2
Jake and Elwood Jude (Joe and Jeff) - 2
So that's 8 already, with another 20 or so I can name right off the top of my head but don't want to count until I hear from them or have them post it here.
So we're gonna be nearly 3/4 full pretty soon. Lisa said she can add more seats inside in the 2nd floor dining room which would give us capacity for another 20-25 people, plus room for standees and a few more seats on the side decks.
If you do want to be there, sooner is better than late to let us know - I got a feeling it's gonna fill up fast for opening night
Clammer 09-09-2008, 12:15 AM I [NEVER} know were I,ll be /so as of now ???

Basically I just want to let Lisa know in case we need to arrange for the other dining room too (the one that's next to the bar  ) to handle the over-Flo :hihi:
Hmmm...considering we've still got 3 weeks to go,
it's looking like we might need a bigger boat.
Ooops...sorry...I meant rock :tooth:
Oh yeah, BTW, me and KB did the layout today and got the tickets on order so that's another thing taken care of - so sign-up for the tourney is coming :soon::soon::soon:
Don't touch that dial :)
Chuck,
You can count me in.
DZ
maybe we can all wear on of those "Hello my name is" sticker with our names on there so everyone can identify us better.
BassDawg 09-24-2008, 07:06 PM Hello, Chuck!
sadly i must bail out for The Inaugural HABS Fall Classic.
:( :bc: :bc: :(
due to an unforseen family event that is taking in place in
PA, in the heart of Coal Country, i am forced to BOW OUT
:realmad: :realmad: :realmad:
of THE Tournament. i would still like to contribute to the tourney
with a donation towards the prize kitty/the designated charity~~~
however best you see fit, Chuck. is there a way for me, and others i hope, to sweeten the pot if one so chooses??
please lemee know sose i can send you sum bucks for the tourney!!
thanks again for ALL that you and Joe do, making this Tournament a reality is NOT an easy task and it sounds like it is shaping up to be quite the Fall Run event!!! it would've been nice to meet the new faces and fish with sum guys that i haven't fished with yet, but would like to?
Good luck to everyone!!
Crafty Angler 09-24-2008, 08:05 PM Thanks, BassDawg :btu:
Hadn't really thought about it but if anyone wants to donate something in Habs name to go to the charity Jessie Haberek has chosen, they could probably send it directly to Jess at the Habratory's PO box in Smithfield.
I have one of John's old cards, I just want to double check to make sure the PO box # is the same - I'll post it as soon as I find out.
Thanks again!

Dad 818 09-30-2008, 10:25 AM i'm in on this for sure. maybe i missed this, but where exactly are the certified weigh-ins?
the 3 weigh in shops: Quonny Bait &Tackle (see Tim the owner) formerly Captain Don's on rt 1 in Charleston, Edwards Bait and Tackle in Newport ,Kevin runs this shop, (Connell Hwy near Walmart and next to the Hillmart convenience store), and the Saltwater Edge on Valley rd in Middletown.
Dad 818 09-30-2008, 10:57 AM John do those of us who have registered thru PayPal need to bring a receipt to a weigh station to enter a fish or pick up our pins?
Crafty Angler 09-30-2008, 01:19 PM John do those of us who have registered thru PayPal need to bring a receipt to a weigh station to enter a fish or pick up our pins?
Yes - any of the three weigh stations will then issue you a ticket to be filled out which has to be presented in order to weigh in your fish and they will also give you one of the nice enameled Habs pins -
Thanks, Dad818 - good luck, look forward to seeing you! :btu:

Thank YOU. This is a great idea and though I never had the pleasure of meeting John personally, I feel like I have reading from everyone what a great man he was. I look forward to this tournament for years and years to come.
Crafty Angler 10-02-2008, 02:02 PM I can't believe the Tourney Kick-Off Meet and Greet is just about a week away :eek5::eek5:
The good news is, things have been falling into place (well, so far, anyway - knock knock knock knock knock on wood...)

That's 25 - and I know a bunch that haven't chimed in yet.
Hey, if you guys are coming and haven't spoken up yet, please do it soon so I can get a number to Komes and Lisa to give them an idea of what to expect and make sure they're all set for us with plenty of chowder, clamcakes and prime rib - it's not a reservation thing, just want it to go smooth for my buds in the kitchen at Flo's :uhuh:
Oh man, I'm dyin' for a big cut of prime (I missed lunch today, which doesn't help me much as I type, either) But if you're not a Big Beef person like me, there's also plenty of excellent seafood choices at great prices, too -
So da countdown is on - I'm psyched to get it started, it's gonna be goooood.
Oh and......uh......rumor has it that the fishing is finally starting to light up a wee bit ;)
