View Full Version : On average, how many plugs doyou BUY each year? Mr. Sandman 12-05-2008, 08:52 AM How bad is your habbit? How many plugs do you buy each year on average? Back Beach 12-05-2008, 08:54 AM One or two gibbs pencils for wood. Lots of rubber, probably 30 or so 9" tsunamis and about the same number of 7" tsunamis. Raven 12-05-2008, 08:55 AM it used to be weekly... numbskull 12-05-2008, 08:55 AM One or two gibbs pencils for wood. Lots of rubber, probably 30 or so 9" tsunamis and about the same number of 7" tsunamis. Have you no soul? BigFish 12-05-2008, 09:19 AM Hmmm.....I would have to saaayyyy........I don't buy any!:btu: The Dad Fisherman 12-05-2008, 09:23 AM I buy probably 3-4 a year....trade a bunch...make a bunch too. ProfessorM 12-05-2008, 09:49 AM 1. Slipknot 12-05-2008, 10:01 AM I have an addiction, what can I say I still buy 10 or so a year and make my own too, average 30-40 each year:conf: DZ 12-05-2008, 10:21 AM Maybe a couple plugs each season - mostly plastic models(Super Strikes). Call me frugal but I still use favorite plugs that I purchased 25 years ago. When I lose one - I cry. DZ BillM 12-05-2008, 10:24 AM I bought 6 wooden plugs last year. I still have five of them- and that aint bad. I fished mostly eels this summer and only caught on one plug. I only threw plugs when they werent hitting the eels. Tman1 12-05-2008, 10:24 AM I usually end up buying about 10 a year and make round 2-3 dozen over the winter. Crafty Angler 12-05-2008, 10:43 AM Maybe a couple plugs each season - mostly plastic models(Super Strikes). Call me frugal but I still use favorite plugs that I purchased 25 years ago. When I lose one - I cry. DZ You're frugal. Don't feel bad about it Dennis - after doing a major cleaning in the tackle shack it's abundantly clear that I don't need a lot at this point - just replace favorites that I've lost from time to time. I like to think of it as one of the upsides to being an old guy...:hihi: Hopefully, I can think of another...:rollem: MVbluefish 12-05-2008, 10:56 AM Hmmm.....I would have to saaayyyy........I don't buy any!:btu: Neither do I;) http://www.striped-bass.com/Stripertalk/showthread.php?t=53232 :laughs: Back Beach 12-05-2008, 11:15 AM  Have you no soul? The question was how many do you "Buy". Gifts are quite another story.. I take such great care of my plugs(little usage) that they never wear out. I still have a white pencil I bought at the gibbs household back in the late 80's that rides around in my bag and still catches fish on occasion.:fishin: I've also been known to beg, barter, and steal for vintage rebel f-90's. Still trying to butter up TO as he's got a shiny new one still in the box. BigFish 12-05-2008, 11:15 AM Not to fish though!:laughs: Smart ass!:btu: fishbones 12-05-2008, 12:32 PM Probably around 15 to 20 last year. I didn't lose a single plug last season, so it will probably be fewer in 2009. I don't really plan on buying plugs, but if I see one at a show, or something like a Jigsmith become available, I'll buy one. All of my plugs eventually see water, so it's not a collecting thing for me. I also turn a few each year as time permits and have been doing a bunch of Salty's kits. RIROCKHOUND 12-05-2008, 12:39 PM I think I bought (0) last year... I stocked up on big stormshads a few years ago... I'm well stocked on Redfins, I make needles and fish eels most of the time... Clogston29 12-05-2008, 12:40 PM i'd say 10-20 now. used to be more but i've got so many. plus a few guys who make them are nice enough to give me some to try out. that number goes up if i stumble on some yellow/white or blurple a-salt or long bombers on clearance somewhere, because then i might by 10 or 20 on the spot knowing that i'll use them eventrually. beaver 12-05-2008, 12:57 PM I don't splurge that often. Unless I go somewhere to get breakaways or something and their out. Then I need to make the trip seem worthwhile so I'll buy a $15 or $20 plug. Make sense? I also take very good care of my plugs and still use some that are 20-30 years old. I even have a few pencils given to my great uncle by stan gibbs when they used to fish together. I would like to take them out of my bag, but they still produce. RoyL 12-05-2008, 01:21 PM I definatly buy over 20 a year..... I really have it bad, but then again My girl works to pay the bills and I work to support my fishing habbits....lol Sea Dangles 12-05-2008, 02:22 PM It's getting to the point where I will probably unload a lot of vintage plugs. I like a metal lip or pencil on occasion just to practice casting. Mr. Sandman 12-05-2008, 02:39 PM I recall a few years ago, my wife said to me...you have all these plugs...but you fish eels most of the time. I started fishing plugs more in recent years to justify my expenditures in this area:1poke:...make sense to you? Striperknight 12-05-2008, 02:51 PM I buy about 10-15 old beat up plugs a year. I take them apart, learn and rebuild them. I then give them to kids, or guys that can't afford wood. Mike P 12-05-2008, 04:24 PM I probably have at least 50 Hawg Hunters--some still NIP. I brought about 70 Superstrike plugs with me from NY when I moved, along with at least 30 Beachmasters. About the same number of Habs needles, and dozens of plastic swimmers--Bombers, Redfins, Yozuris, Megabaits, etc. Gotta have at least 30 Gibbs Canal Specials alone, plus another 30 of other assorted Gibbs--bottles, Polarises, Stubbies, darters. Last year I think I bought about 5 of Mike T's CCT pencils and Polarises. That was it. I need more plugs like I need another head. Now---ask me how much lead and plastic I burn through in a year  fishaholic18 12-05-2008, 04:39 PM 0:fishin: ivanputski 12-05-2008, 04:48 PM I honestly want to lose some... the fewer plugs I have, the more it will force me to catch with what I have, and stop switching plugs every 3 casts because I have 25 with me... honestly. Have you read the thread about "what was your hottest plug this season?" You will notice that everyone killed with something different... fish a plug in front of a hungry bass= catch a bass... my 2009 strategy is MINIMIZE # of plugs , MAXIMIZE my confidence in a chosen few. jimmy z 12-05-2008, 04:48 PM I bought over 20 this last week alone. It's hard to say, over the course of a year. But I would guess, alot. Rob Rockcrawler 12-05-2008, 04:58 PM I probably get 5-10 or so a year. I was fortunate and didnt lose any wood this year. Sacrificed a lot of plastic 1 night in RI. ITs worth it for 15lb blues. LAst year is was mostly CCT dannys, i bought about a half dozen, and gave a few away. Gave one to my buddy to give to his kid. First cast he got his first keeper. Best 15 bucks i ever spent. spence 12-05-2008, 05:55 PM I bought so many the past few years I think I'm set until 2012. I will need some more eel hooks though. -spence Tagger 12-05-2008, 06:04 PM 20 +... then the trades , I'm sick .. Bazza 12-05-2008, 06:14 PM I bought about 15 or so ( ok maybe more). I do not need any more plugs. However, when you see some at a show, store ect.. it can be tough to hold back. ThrowingTimber 12-05-2008, 06:43 PM 1-5 maybe mostly make my own and fish them or trade with others etc :lama: bassackward 12-05-2008, 07:55 PM I'd have to say 20 per year, even though I use eels and cheap bombers or sluggos the most. I like to support Bigfish Larry, Salty, Afterhours, Surf Asylums, Habs, RMs, etc., and the other plug makers at the shows I attend, as well as some of the local B & Ts. The craftmanship is a joy to behold, but I find myself afraid to use them is some areas where loosing them is easy (too much structure or heavy weed areas). I have no intention on selling these and hope to use all of them over time or pass on to friend and my kids. After attending the Dadfishermans tutorial for the kids with the PI club, I finished one with my daughter that I was able to catch some large blues with, and thankfully did not lose it (I don't use metal leaders, but heavy mono of flouro). Thanks Kev. I may try some of Salty's kits in the future. Maybe I'll get a lathe in the near future and take a crack at a new hobby. doc 12-08-2008, 09:48 AM i buy too many...! stripercrazy 12-08-2008, 09:52 AM I'm good for 20 a year I'm sure NIGHT STRIKES 12-10-2008, 11:37 AM I think I bought at least that many at RISSA "08" :D And being a Berkeley Striper Club member and living close by to the Asbury Park Fishing Club doesn't help either each spring here in Jersey ;) But times are changing and I no longer peep at the bay anymore looking for deals and I am not so sure I will be able to make it to RI for the show this year either.. I see alot of fishermen selling stashes of plugs lately in the B/S/T forums and I just have to look away or I will go nuts.. Addicted :gu: - But in the 12 step program to recovery  :kewl: steve 12-10-2008, 11:49 AM Alot each season. Always looking for that special fish catcher. Carry around too many when I fish. Always end up using eels, live or rigged or sluggos and redfins/yozuri mag darter/surface skin swimmer. I wish I could be disciplined enough to use other stuff which I vow to do each season but end up chickening out. Next season I am giong to use some of the fine stuff that is availble now more than ever. Joe 12-10-2008, 12:06 PM About 6000 or so. Stewie 12-11-2008, 06:20 PM I buy a few SS darters to lose and maybe a few Gibbs too. But the guys I fish with look at me funny if I'm not using one that they made and gave me.:wavey: Just don't ask me how many reels I bought last year. BassDawg 12-13-2008, 05:58 PM i chose 5-10 in the poll, but forgot that this year is the year i buy BF and Tattoo. then there is the replenishment of me AH stock and me Danny's. sooooooooo that number will be closer to 25. do tins count, too?? :wavey: :wavey: :wavey: then there is always the hoin' and the giveaways that i garner thru the year from the guys from ova there<<<. scrazyED, The Mayor of CTown, Scotty, RHM, and A229's teasers. for an EEEEEEEEEEEEEELS guy; i have waaaay too much AYC. :bl: :bl: :bl: :bl: Swimmer 12-14-2008, 09:46 AM I have to ask Bigfish. I have an open account with Larry. vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2025, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
