View Full Version : Song of the week

Back Beach 12-06-2013, 05:50 PMThis show is regarded as one of the best ever by many dead fans. Most times I pass on the popular opinion shows, but this one deserves the hype. Another one worthy of adding to the rotation. Pure magic:

ProfessorM 12-19-2013, 07:53 PMHad this guy on pod yesterday. Pretty underrated IMO. Like this bluesy tune a lot.

ProfessorM 12-19-2013, 08:00 PMThis also today for you fusion fans. This tune is fantastic. I never grow bored of Jean Luc's stuff. I just found out that the bassist is Randy Jackson of American Idol fame. The guy is pretty darn good. I'm impressed.

 ProfessorM 01-03-2014, 05:17 PMI liked that...very Steely Dan-ish.
He has done some work for them on occasion and worked with Pink Floyd on The Wall album. There isn't many he hasn't played with being a studio player for 40 years. His solo stuff is fantastic usually with the hiring of the best studio guys he has played with. No slouches for him.
 ProfessorM 01-08-2014, 08:35 PMhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhCPKW5uqYA
ProfessorM 01-11-2014, 05:29 PMSome Dan. Great talk box solo by Dean Parks.
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWYchJI0Cv8
ProfessorM 01-11-2014, 05:51 PMIf you find Dean Parks interesting here is a band, Koinonia, early 80 he had a big part of. Some real good session players, which Dean was and Steely Dan used on all their albums, came out of this band. He left early in the bands history so it is hard to find a lot he did with them. He is still a sought after sessions player in LA according to his site.

Check out this guys resume, unbelievable

Bay this summer with him.paul; it's pretty quiet here in the mountains.snowshoeing daily in the surrounding woods and crossing Rangeley lake to the local coffee shop/post office to gab in the morning.hanging out in the shop building/repairing rods and tying flies for brookies, salmon and bonefish/tarpon/permit for the travelers heading south.looks like we're going to get 2' of snow tomorrow through Thursday.the turkeys are strutting around in the yard so it's definitely spring[ya right!].I have a new "tin-can" up here.A 16' lund tiller w/25 Honda.Like the old girl, just newer.was listening to an oldie today American Garage as I was making eyes for shrimp flies. rphud 03-05-2015, 08:37 AMIt's on one of the CDs you burned for me. Took me forever to track him down. ProfessorM 03-07-2015, 06:24 PMHey Bob Pat just blows me away every time I listen no matter what style he is killing and the fact he chooses and surrounds himself with such fantastic musicians is further evidence that he has no equal in my book.
rphud 03-08-2015, 11:48 AMFunny, I was thinking of the interview Pat did where he says there is only one Jaco and nobody can do Jaco and it came to mind that the same is true for Pat. I think my head would explode if Pat toured with Redman and Christian McBride in this neck of the woods.

ProfessorM 03-09-2015, 11:15 AMI was in early with this kid and touted his skills several years ago but I have kind of tired of his sound in the past year or so but that is probably just me. None the less he is talented.Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device
ProfessorM 03-09-2015, 01:38 PMThe previous opinion was not meant to diminish the guy you like just curious if anyone else feels that way or I am off kilter with my remark. I don't usually put down artists as everyone likes what they like. I got a 14 year daughter who is an aspiring musician and I cringe at what she considers music. rphud 06-27-2015, 10:10 AMCamarillo is just a few up the road from where I have been stationed all month. Need to drive over and pay homage to Bird this afternoon. Now known as Cal State Channel Islands, but a few of the original buildings are still there.

ProfessorM 11-21-2015, 09:12 PMSome Frank tonight. Occam's Razor
This is an example of Zappa's Xenochrony technique. If you are unfamiliar with this term here is an explanation
 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenochrony

Either way it is a killer solo and actually from a live version of Inca Roads.

rphud 12-07-2015, 06:27 PMmore like song of the decade, but who's counting
Now don't forget the guns you know exactly what I mean
Bring the pistols, bring the Uzi and the old AR-15
We don't look for trouble but by golly if we're in it
It's nice to know we're free to blow nine hundred rounds a minute
