My father was killed in a car accident Friday night. He died amongst a sea of sirens and flashing lights, closing a road to traffic for three hours. I am very hung up on the idea of my dad dying in a crash. I wake up at 3 a.m. and start in thinking about him. It's so sad. My heart bleeds. My poor mom--they met in high school and married shortly after. He was 68 when he died. I saw my father all the time. He was a huge lover of the sea and boats. This will be a hard Holiday season for me and my family. I don't even know why I am posting this. I just think it helps to know that people out there care, people who don't even know me. So sad. So very very sad.

John my heart goes out to you and your family sincerely at the loss of your Dad. Losing your Dad is a tough moment in anyones life and it naturally leaves a great void. I miss my Dad terribly each day. From my own loss several years ago the best advice I can give is just to cherish your Dad's memory and celebrate his life at this time. The week my Dad passed was a tough one and I spent the time getting a photo collage and mementos that represented my Dads life and accomplishments and his passions together and I had them on display in the funeral home for folks to see and it gave them some insight into who my Dad was and the wonderful life that he led. This was a great "distraction" for me and all the memories this process brought out that week really helped not only me but also my family. Be strong for your family John and those great memories of your Dad will get you through it. Keep them close now and always. I wish you and your family strength going forward.

I so sorry to hear of your loss, I lost my father when he was 67 ,it's just way too young. Same thing with him and my mom, --married young and seemingly forever. Your mom will need you to lean on and be strong for her. It totally sucks and no words can really help.Time does help some but it never really goes away completely. I got by, by remembering that dad was a good man and that I have to carry on and do my best.Remembering the good times helps too. Truely sorry for your lose. It will get better with time but will never go away. Last week Dec 6th was the 25th year without my dad. He also died in a traggic auto accident at 60 with my uncle and 3 good friends, 5 total. I was 18 at the time. He was the best dad there was. Not much of a fisherman but loved to sail and did his best to satisfy my fishing needs with trolling off the sailboat when I was a kid. Now I'm finding it hard to bring up those thoughts.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I was looking at pictures two weeks ago of a trip to some of my family took to Ireland when I was 4-5 yrs old, 1973-74. There was a picture in the bunch of me and my Dad taking a ferry over the Shannon River. In the picture I'm looking at the camera, he's got his hand on my shoulder but he's looking at me, not the camera. I now know what he was thinking because I recognize the look on his face, it's the face I have on when I'm looking at my own son. He died in 1981 when i was 12. John, I say this because it sounds like you had an awesome relationship with your Dad. It's that relationship and those memories that will always keep him in your life. Once again, I'm sorry for your loss.

I am very sorry to hear of the death of your dad. That's hard. We don't know eachother, but your post sort of got to me. I work in an ICU in a big, urban hospital, and unfortunately we see patients die. I am not sure why, but it seems comforting to me to know someone has not died alone. I have placed my palm on a dying patient's forehead, just to let them know there is another, caring human presence. I have no idea if it's helpful for them, maybe it just helps me. Under those frightening circumstances of a car wreck, it's amazing that a stranger was able to do that.

Maybe it will help to know that there's folks thinking about you and your mom right now.

Keep the good memories in the forefront for these days. Write down some good memories/stories for 10 years from now when some memories fade. (it helps healing too).

Been dealing with the police. The cops have been very sympathetic. They brought me, my brother, and mom to the junk yard where car is. Then to the crash site. RT 6 right over the RI line in Conn. I never did like RT 6.
