there seems to be a little interest in codfishing out there. last year we did togfest, how about this year we do codfest. with the togs we just did a bunch of us with boats but for codfishing we could do a partyboat and fish stellwagen in the spring. is it the viking that goes out quincy? i've never done a private charter on a partyboat - how many guys do you think we need to do it

I've have a friend that did similar (rent a party cod boat) but he used the Gloucester fleet. Not sure he chartered the entire boat or just reserved 20+ slots, but I think the entire boat. Sometimes the boat requires a minimum number.

I have fished the Gulf of Maine for a while on a charter boat out of Perkins Cove. I won't post the name here as they are not a sponsor but its a good boat, good captain initials are BC. Its what I'd call a fisherman's head boat. Wet deck, no heated cabin, lobsterboat style fishing. Pretty much a jig bite. They use good equipment if you don't have your own. Very good times. If people are interested I will call the captain.
I already have a couple marathon trips scheduled but could do one more.

Paul,

My bachelor party in 05 was a Cod trip. We had the whole boat and had about 20 guys. I think it was out of Seabrook NH (Eastman’s maybe?) and fished the Gulf of Maine. I don’t think the price was that bad per guy. It was 6 years ago though…………

We charter the yankee capts every august. I THINK its about 2500, so 25 people 100 bucks a head plus tip for the mates and we go on a marathon trip, 12-14 hours. Not that bad when you consider its a boat of all people ya know.

I'd love to go if I'm available on the date you choose.

Look into the Challenger out of Newburyport. These guys know where the cod are. Check the fishing reports link below and look at May - Mid June. Huge fish! Rates to charter the entire boat are very reasonable. You would only need 15 people on the weekend to get the price under $100 a head. 12 hour marathons also available.

Weekends $1450.00
This is for up to 30 passengers,
add $48.00 for each additional passenger
Weekdays $1200.00
This is for up to 25 passengers,
add $48.00 for each additional passenger

I just want to clarify I do not have any affiliation to the company or captain. Just hought I would share a good experience I had a few yeas ago. Went out of Plymouth on a Captain John Boat and Captain Tucker put us on a lot of fish - if he is still around I would ask for him again. It didn't look like we would get the minimum amount of anglers (I think 15) but we did. I heard an old timer comment that they probably would not run the engines that long and it would be a short trip but he ran long and far from 7 to 3. BTW Captain John always has a table at the MSBA shows and it would be nice to show support. Not a bad take for $49. If you can get the cost more around this dollar amount I am in (and would like to take my oldest boy) no matter where it is - sounds like a good time with some good people. Thanks :jump1:

These guy's are hard core, they leave from the same marina I am brerthed at...they catch fish when other do not.. and fish when others run for home and mother..

The Stripers Inn that is located in the same complex, gives ( at least they used to) discounts to those using the Clipper fleet.. so if you are there the night before, you simply stumble from your rack stroll across the parking lot ( get coffee or breakfast at the fish tale diner) and get on the boat.. never getting into your vehicle until you go home...

How big is the sundance 2? Ive been out on the challenger and maybe the Sundance a number of years ago. While i would love to catch a 50 lb'er what are the chances of a release on a fish that size? Its gotta be tough if you plan on getting it over the gunwale. Maybe knockin the jig out with a gaff... If only i have the chance to run into that problem.

Looks like this trip is going to happen! Awesome! Thanks Niko!

I hope I’m not overstepping my bounds but I wanted to make a proposal. I’ve fished both of these boats and the Challenger is just so much more fishable, especially when you are catching big cod. The back of the Sundance is fine, but landing a big fish at the bow is not as easy. It’s true that they don’t like to charter the Challenger on the weekends because they like to save the better boat for the regulars but they will do it. I made a call to Joe at the Clipper Fleet and talked about what he would be willing to do. Here’s what he said:
1) He will reserve the Challenger for us!
2) Cost: The Challenger is a bigger boat and is twice as expensive to run but fits more people. They used to put 50 to 55 on the boat but today they like to limit it to a very comfortable 40. The normal weekend rate is $68 pp at 40 head plus $4 for a rod. He will charter the boat to our group on May 15th for $2600 plus rod rentals, 7 AM to 4 PM. We can make is a marathon, 5 AM to 5 PM for only $200 more.
3) Those that sign up can call the Clipper Fleet and pay directly. He will handle this for us. This way no one has to collect the money and deal with all the hassle that goes with that responsibility. They take credit cards as well. All we need to do is name our group and direct individuals to call Clipper Fleet and pay by 3/31. (He typically asks for $1000 down and the balance on the day of the trip so as long as we get 15 guys to sign up by 3/31 we should have additional time to fill the boat. (I suggest we pay this way whether we do the Challenger or the Sundance to make it easier on Niko and avoid Pay Pal fees)
4) If we don’t get the full 40 which it looks like won’t be a problem then he can open up the additional slots to his regulars or we can cover the cost of the additional slots between us. There is a twist to this is if he has to open it up to the public in that he may have to go to a regular 9 hour trip. So if we want to do the marathon we can pay the additional $200 at the dock. We just have to decide now so that people know what they are signing up for. If we don’t get the magic number or agree to cover the open slots by say 4/15 then he opens it up and it goes to the regular 7 to 4 trip. As long as we have a critical mass and agree to cover the extra if we don’t hit 40 then we can leave the trip open to our group right up until 5/15 to fill any open slots.
5) Zacs or Niko can own the sign up list and give the names to the Clipper Fleet so that only our group is signing up. When we’ve reached the agreed upon number of paid spots we can shut it down.
6) At 35 guys this is $74.28 pp, at 40 it’s $65 and at 45 it’s $57.77. I realize it’s a few extra dollars but this boat is much more fishable and even a bit faster. It also has a flatter bottom and doesn’t roll as much when drifting. We’ll be more comfortable and be able to include more of us for more fun and a bigger pool!
7) We are responsible for the $2600 or $2800 only. How we fill the boat is up to us.
8) Next steps:
a. Tell me to shut up and stick with the current plan on the Sundance. I won’t be offended and I am definitely in!
b. Decide we want to do the Challenger.
c. Agree on the target size (say 40 at $65), name the group and start PM’ing our full names to whoever will own the list.
d. Call Joe at the Clipper Fleet and give him our group name and the individual list.
e. Direct folks to call the Clipper Fleet and pay for their slot.
f. Start the trash talking on who is going to land the biggest cod!

By the way, I did not mention striped-bass.com, Niko or anyone here so if we don’t want to pursue the Challenger nothing has changed about the Sundance deal.

Tight lines!

niko

i'm open to this plan as long as we get 35+ guys. let's decide if this is the way we want to go over the weekend. i've got a deposit set to go out to him, but i will sit on it over the weekend. fish on - if we go this way you can set this up w/ the capt seeing as you allready talked to him

Most of those big girls come belly up.. there is not alot of release if you get one.... I carry a vewnting tool, and it works great on the smaller stuff... not so much in the big ones....there should be a fair amount of haddock as well... clams or a small jig worked very slowly work well.. the Sudance is a big boat.. i'm not sure how big... dryer and faster than the Challenger too...

Taking the weekend to decide sounds great. If we decide on the Challenger I’m happy to confirm it with Jim and I’ll reach out to him periodically and post an updated count of how many have paid. Should we do a show of hands for both decisions? a) Challenger or Sundance and b) Regular trip (9 hours) or marathon (12 hours).

I’ll start and put myself down for preferring the Challenger and the marathon.

The head count and whether or not we do a marathon will determine the final cost but here are the estimates based on a specific count for each boat.

Challenger:
-At 40 total it will be $70/person for the marathon

Sundancer
-At 25 it will be $66 for the marathon

PS: Jim at Clipper Fleet confirmed the Challenger is the faster boat.

Thanks all! I spoke with Niko and Zacs over the weekend and based on the responses rcvd we have confirmed the trip to be a marathon (5AM-5PM) on the Challenger. I have called the Clipper Fleet and locked up the date for 5/15 and paid for 3 slots (myself and 2 guests). Cost is $70 pp. If you need a rod it will be $4 at the boat.

To sign up please:
1) Respond to this thread with number of slots and PM Zacs with your full name.
2) Call: 978-465-7495 or 800-404-4575 to sign up and pay. Tell them you are with the stripedbass.com group.

We need 15 paid by 3/31 and the full group by 4/15. Targeting 40. I’ve pulled together some group rates for hotel below. Note; space is very limited at the Stripers Inn (dockside) so grab these rooms early!

Hotel accommodations:

Stripers Inn (limited availability):
-4 rooms with 2 double beds $99

Great job guys! First number is original order of sign up. Last number is order paid. Trying to track both to avoid any hard feelings once the boat fills up.

There are 39 of the 40 original spots available (Joe had one guy sign up 6 months ago for this day and is driving up from New York).

I believe we have 27 paid so far. With 7 that have said they are going but have not yet paid (below). That leaves 2 open slots left assuming the 3 slots listed as tentative confirm and pay as well. If you are one of these 10 and can confirm whether you are in or out as soon as possible that would be appreciated. If in please call Clipper Fleet to sign up and pay. If interested and haven't posted yet please post to the thread so we can get your name on the list. We'll see how it goes to determine when we will set the deadline to have paid so we can free up the spots for others that will have signed up.

Zacs thanks for also keeping a list while I'm away (checking in right now from Bangkok, Thailand)! Please keep it going and I'll check in when I can. Drop me a pm if you see something amiss and I'll try to drop you a pm back.

This crew is awesome! Thanks for all the cooperation. Mother nature wouldn't dare send us anything but a perfect day of weather for our trip! Tight lines!

this will be a great trip everyone. newbies are welcome. for the uninitiated - this is prime time for cod and haddock. don't be shy, sign up and call them to book your spot. a few trips i did on my boat around this time of year, between 3 guys we loaded up a pair of 150qt coolers to the brim, hundreds of pounds of fish, all before lunch, all on jigs. a trip like this will load you up w/ meat for awhile. i will set it up w/ a local shelter/food pantry that i can drop off any fillets not wanted. and i believe freebie is derekl's guest

yes I am Derekl's guest. he beat me to the punch on this one. I might have a guest of my own but won't know til the weekend.
what kind of weight's should we be bringing to jig with on a trip like this? I typically use 14-16 but am guessing that more would be needed up in that neck of the woods?

I asked the captain, he said they typically use 12 oz jigs and 16 oz sinkers.

the boat capacity is 45 guys - 30 is for the other boat i believe. there are always a few guys puking or sleeping or just have had enough

JackK

They do special limited trips on the challenger and only let 30 people on... Pic on the website. The boat is huge though, I can't imagine even with 40 we'd be cramped at all.

If you have paid, please post to the thread and indicate which spot on the list you paid for and we'll update. Thanks Throwing Timber!

To clarify on capacity, this is exactly what Joe at ClipperFleet told me, "The Challenger is a bigger boat and is twice as expensive to run but fits more people. They used to put 50 to 55 on the boat but today they like to limit it to a very comfortable 40". If we want to cut it off at 35 then we just need to pay $10 extra at the boat. I've been on the boat with 40 and it is not crowded.

Aww c'mon... Abrasiveness is what's gonna let us get through the next two months! A little good natured smack talk never hurt anyone, it's all in jest. Trip can't come soon enough. I'll bring a gumby suit for you so you can paddle around when we toss you over. :rotf2: Cod skishing anyone?

When I spoke to the cap he said it was mainly a jig bite that time of year. But I hear you- sharpies seem to say that the pool fish always comes in on a clam. I figure I'll gut one of the first ones we get, if they're loaded with herring I'll stick to the jig, otherwise I might consider dropping some bait down.

I think f4s is right on that one.

I use williamson jigs so you can use the herrings, I just found they break easily

Rob Rockcrawler
03-18-2011, 07:16 AM
I have tried crippled herrings and didnt like the results. I also had the brilliant idea to try and put a small bend in a 10 oz to get a bit of a flutter. I applied minimal pressure and it snapped like a toothpick. Im a fan of tube jigs. After seeing what they can do i picked up a couple and had good success last year. Although, I really think that your style of jigging has more to do with success than the actual jig you are using.

crippled herrings work pissa - i use them all the time for haddock/cod on my boat. one thing about them on a party boat though is that the 16 oz one will dance around some on the drop so you will get more tangles w/ neighbors than if you are using norweigens. every style of jig work on cod, some days they seem to have a preference for one style over another, it prob is just a matter of what they are keyed in on for bait - herring or sandeels. if anyone sees any angerman jigs out there pick a few up for me.

I like the jig talk. Anyone want to put together or share their checklist of items. I've only been cod fishing once and it was with Terrence so we had a dozen of everything onboard.

good idea vic. i think the area we'll be fishing will be cashes ledge. i'm not all that familiar with it, maybe someone will chime in on what the area is like. lots of sticky bottom? how deep it is?. we'll be rolling up on a full moon so there will be some water moving. generally for jigging i bring (2) each of jigs from 10 oz to 21+ oz. if it's blowing and the current ripping the other way the weight is needed. or if it's a bluebird day you can get away with a nice little jig and not need pop a bunch of advil at the end of the day. for jigs - everything works, get a couple of different profiled stuff. teasers - same thing, everything works. little sluggos, cod flies, any grub. they are just greedy this time of year. and someone call terrence

Neg. You are on the side. See the clever diagram?

Anyway, I have the highest number, so obviously I get to choose where I fish. That's how these things work. You can bring me beer though, that's fine.

Stern is where the toilet empties. If you
want to fish among brown mullets then
you can have it. Besides the diagram
shows the starboard, eh right side had
more room between the numbers and
will be more confortable for those who
cast out their baits. That's for me.

how about the pools. should we do a $5 one for biggest fish and a plug pool biggest combo of cod/haddock, or most legal fish, or trifecta cod/haddock/pollock. i think in the interest of spreading the wealth if you win the biggest fish pool then your done for the other pool. any interest?

I'm in and paid..... I just called and she said there were still 2 more slots open.
By the way....it's always a good idea to leave some pool money available.... it's a lot of fun when "Monty Hall" yells $20 bucks next fish..... lots of excitement to see who gets it over the rail or loses the fish...... also keeps everybody in the "game" all day. Pool entry should be $20 bucks.... By the way not too worried about my spot on the rail..... it might blow a gail and the surf guys will turn green. A marathon usually means lots of bodies to step over......

I have the list coming from clipper later when Joe gets back, and I will cross reference, because it looks like I may be missing a few on my list.

Lets close registration for now until we sort out who is left & how many spots.

Once we have the firm list, we will open it up again, but I would be wary of 'holding' spots for anyone. First come, first served seems most fair to me. Others thoughts on this?
