1965 Whaler Sakonnet 16'7" - bought originally by uncle and then passed amongst his family. My cousin and I now own it and mainly use to fish freshwater ponds and Stage Harbor when weather is nasty.

2005 Sea Hunt Triton - love the boat and much safer for my family then the Whaler. I've fished Montauk, BI, Narr Bay, MV, Nantucket, shipping lanes east of Chatham and Stellwagon to Boston Harbor. Thinking about selling next year and upgrading to the 24' model.

Transformation, original with trolling motor added, then T-Top and the best money I've spent was the canvass; boy does that make a huge difference in a small center console. This boat is rock solid and with the canvass, I have the perfect rig for me now.

Had the Triton 172 for 3 years. Great boat but dicey to get outside with. Go up to the Triton 202 and you will find a whole different boat. It's a lot heavier and will stand up to much bigger water.

Most of you guys have seen all this already but I figured I'd post again for the heck of it.

KAD 300 single diesel. cruise 24-26mph wot 31-33mph. 240 gal of fuel, advertised range 700 miles, realistic range: 550 or so/ 70 gal water, fridge/sink/stove/microwave/bev. cooler/ AC/HEAT/ 110/12/2500watt inverter / head/shower/v birth/rear berth/2 huge fish boxes/ live well/ tackle station/ lots of storage, outside and inside.

Odd looking boat but very practical for my needs and type of of fishing. <10 made with house, most had walk thru CC and tower.

It is no luxury yacht and does not scream across the water but it is pretty comfortable esp in the weather we tend to get here.
Great boat for a 2-4 guys fishing and/or overnight at some distant port. I re-did the inside a bit last winter and did a lot of work in the engine room area. This winter I am thinking of completing some unfinished projects starting a few more and adding a few more goodies.

I get a lot of comments about it, more than any boat I have owned

I just pulled the trigger on a 2012 C-Hawk 25 foot center console. Will be named the "Courtney Lynn" after my better half. I think the length is 24'10", beam is 9'6". This is a photo of the stock hull, I'm having mine customized a bit for fishing/diving/family friendliness. Adding a bowrail, adding a huge casting deck/sunpad in the bow with bow dodger, enclosed transom with bracket in back. Adding power when the hull is shipped here in June 2012. SHould serve as a functional platform for 3/4 guys throwing eels and plugs, or for when I'm playing with the wife, 3 sons, and the golden retriever, who is 12 and I pray he hangs around long enough to enjoy this boat.

Love the Sea Hunts. And you don't see too many Key Largos. I kept my Key West boat at a marina in CT that sold Key Largos, the owner took me for a ride in the 23 center, supposedly the same mold as a sea craft?

Southern boats also have twice the hard usage on them with twice the hours.

That is a generalization that everyone up here makes. I believed it myself until I actually went and looked at some boats. I looked at a Regulator in Kill Devil Hills, NC and it was used hard and not very well taken care of but there are so many more boats down there and so many to choose from you can definitely find a well cared for boats with low hours.

My Contender is from Mississippi. It's a 2003 and still looks brand new. It was very well cared for, kept inside a garage and trailered. I got it 2 years ago from an older gentleman and it had less than 450 hours. To say he was sad to see it go was an understatement. He still emails me asking about the boat. He had to sell it as he was moving and it was during the BP oil spill so they had shut that whole area down anyway. I had the boat surveyed and it was mint (only think it needed was a new wash down pump). The Yamaha HPDI was also well taken care of with very low hours in the high RPM range. Boat had all paperwork etc. It was cheaper for me to buy it there and have it shipped up than what that same boat was selling for in the North East. (I did finagle a work trip near where the boat was in Miss so I could check it out which saved some $$). Out of all the boats I looked at (most in this area), that boat’s condition blew the doors off of what I was finding up here.

Foreclosure is a powerful motivator.

The beautiful thing about Florida boats is the shear number of them. It is mind boggling how many boats are down there tied to people in serious financial distress. As one broker told me..."Be careful if you make an offer, it could be accepted."

The state is in a real bad way. The unemployment numbers are inaccurate. Many people who lost jobs have left the state and abandoned their boats and property. Once they leave the state, they don't count in the states unemployment numbers. The real unemployment in Florida is probably close to 20% IMO. The construction sector has crashed hard there. Buildings have been stopped in all phases of construction.
Boat Builders will not even start building a boat unless the check has cleared. Nothing is built on spec anymore.

As for the use factor...while that can be true, you would be surprised, you can find a lot of boats with low hours. I did (my 03 had 220 hours on it). IMO the toughest thing about florida is the abuse from the sun and insects..yes insects!
You can find "Free"or nearly free boats there, they may not be cherry, but theyare on the cheap . But you have to go down there and spend a little time nosing around and talking to the people in the boat business. Frankly if you are serious and know what you want, hook up with a bank or broker and have him track a few down for you. Banks are discounting unpaid boat loans like nobodys business. I have seen late model boats go for 40K that were worth 4X that easy and cost 300K new. That is the kind of deals that are down there.

yeah it is a great time to buy. The guy wanted 11K for my boat and I didnt pay anywhere close to that. The motor had 100 hours when I bought it. He was pretty depressed on how much money and time he had put into it only to watch someone else enjoy it.

The fiance wants something with a cuddy that we can take the vinyard and block for the weekends. Not for a little while but I have my eye out on some. Im falling in love with the Pursuit OS 255. Hopefully i can keep the seacraft for fishing.

No real sea monsters with them, but they've been solid on decent fish.

I wouldn't trade what you have for the 130's - just add the bigger ones to the arsenal when you can. You can never have too many tuna rods...(especially if you start doing things like a dedicated kite rod with braid)

I had 1 fish season before last that got down near the bottom of the spool and scared the crap out of me, seemed like a monster but I broke off without seeing it, so who really knows. Since then I Ditched the Dacron and went to 600 yards of 200lb hollow, and a 150 yard mono top shot - that's as much capacity as a 130 with 200 Dacron plus top shot, so no more worries.

Load up the 80's - you can really make a mess with 4.

Question, what is the advantage of using a 130 for a kite reel?

We use 50's and they work fine. If it's blowing 40 knots and your kite is up it's a problem bringing it in. We lost 1 last year while hooked up because we couldn't get the kite in.We won't use kites in winds like that again. lol
If I was going to use a 130 I would just spend the $$$ on an electric set up.

By kite rod - i meant the 130 tuna rod with the bait on it is loaded with braid (just the top 200 yards) - it flies alot easier than 200 lb mono and you can keep your baits up on lighter wind days.
I set up a 50W and an 80W this way.
I just use a 6/0 star drag with braid to fly the kite itself.

We use 50's and they work fine. If it's blowing 40 knots and your kite is up it's a problem bringing it in. We lost 1 last year while hooked up because we couldn't get the kite in.We won't use kites in winds like that again. lol

Buck man - SFE and Tigress are making "high wind" kites now. They look like regular fishing kites, but have holes in them to dump wind. I haven't tried one, but it might worth looking in to. Captain Harry's website has them.

Sandman, is this a direct drive or outdrive?

In my boat a volvo penta duoprop outdrive coupled to a diesel. This, coupled with the cored hull is how they achieve the mileage.
They are semi-custom boats, you can get them with any kind of power you want, many are OB's on a bracket in a CC model. http://www.volvopenta.com/volvopenta/na/en-us/MarineCommercialEngines/aquamatic/engine_range/Pages/p_diesel_sterndrive.aspx

I think now they are even building a new 32 with volvo IPS drives. But expect to pay big $$ for it. Personally, after doing a lot of research I feel the best combo for boats of this size and type would be a single diesel with a Pod drive (ala ZF) and a bow thruster. ZF Marine?s New Single POD Propulsion (http://www.marinelink.com/news/propulsion-marines-single336079.aspx)
SeeVee built a test boat last year for ZF with one and it was pretty impressive. Great reliability, amazing fuel economy excellent maneuverability and really good top end compared to a straight inboard. ZF is trying to work out issues in its electronic positioning controller (similar to volvo ips drives) (ie virtural anchor, etc) . The big difference is that it uses a single drive and a bow thruster vs volvo's dual ips drives. Personally I feel they should not wait for this to be worked out as the efficiency of a single for me is more than enough reason to jump on this concept. I spoke to the seavee rep and he said they have built a lot of boats with this same powerplant and nothing even came close to the performace with the ZF drive.
SeeVee 340 Open Center Console Boat 2011 Performance Test / Detail Review - By BoatTEST.com - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnxeFc1mHeE)

My "dream" rig would be this powerplant/drive in a boat design similar to what I have now.
