tailhooks are pretty interesting....had one at an udl with bf a few years back- thought it was a monster all the way in. turns out my plug came off its clip and formed a lasso around the tail- it was a high teen fish.

I somehow snagged a 14lb blue in its pectoral fin with a circle hook one night. I was sure it was a 50.

Once watched a guy fight and land a 44" in bass that he had tail-hooked during a peanut bunker blitz. He thought he had a 60!

Luds got one right in the anal vent on a needle a few years ago. He thought he had a 50 for sure. Took him around a rock. I climbed/swam out there to free him up. All for an ass hooked 25 lb fish.

You haven't lived until you hook. 15+ pound blewfish in front of the dorsal fin on an 8wt fly rod :) I though I had "the one" on. Went to lip it, flipped on my light and was like "oh ship!!" pulled my hand back REAL fast :)

I hooked a 20-pounder in the... hmm, vent too. I thought it was a 40 for sure. When it slid up on the sand backwards, I couldn't believe my eyes...

Did the same thing at the Narrow one early a.m. Thought I had a 50. Couple guys started to gather around me when I was bringing it in. Pulled it to the sand and there was a 12-14 bluefish hooked beind the dorsal. Everyone was pretty dissapointed.

Same type of story as a lot of you. A few years ago I was fishing a spot that consistently giving up 20lb. bass. After my buddy boats on I get hit, set the hook and I truly felt like I had a 50 lb. fish on, I was absolutely sure it was at least 40 lbs. Well, it was a bluefish hooked in its side. So depressing!!!:rotf2:

Early 90s, tarpon fishing north of Sanibel, FL on Johnson Shoals just off the north end of Cayo Costa (the island that borders the south end of the Boca Grand Pass), just released a nice tarpon on fly ... the fish were pouring through and a pod of fish stalled and started to daisy chain off the bow of the boat ... I grabbed a spinning outfit with a crab, threw it out and hooked up immediately ... during the first 15 minutes of the fight, felt a "slip" and then the fish put on the afterburners ... fought the fish for more than an hour, we honestly thought it was the big Mam-Moo ... thought it was the big one/record class as it was exhibiting the habits of a real big fish - no jumps and stayed deep with the occasional role to gulp air ... when the fish finally came boatside, we realized that the hook had slipped from its mouth and hooked it in the pectoral fin ... still a big fish, but not overly big for tarpon - we were expecting over 200 ... but not even half that size. It was a good way to cap off a day of non-stop action.
