View Full Version : otw 55 pound fish pic?
WESTPORTMAFIA 06-20-2013, 10:49 PM Johnathan Lewie with his 55.1lb striper on June 16th, 2013
I'm not good at the calling pic's crap. Why is there white out in 2 spots that have nothing to do with location. Where is his right hand? And standing straight up feet crooked with a 55 with no strain?
bloocrab 06-20-2013, 11:10 PM Although the tail looks small (not questioning his catch) the only "white-out" I see, isn't really white out. Looks like the sun high-lighting the corner of his shirt. ??? and he's using 2 hands to hold her up, I think>>>
ivanputski 06-20-2013, 11:41 PM its June... people catch 50's
WESTPORTMAFIA 06-20-2013, 11:52 PM its June... people catch 50's
And 60's. The pic just doesn't look right.
WESTPORTMAFIA 06-21-2013, 12:29 AM The white spot below the dorsal and above the tail just jumped out. It even looks worked in the thumbnail. Like I said I'm NOT good at calling pic's crap this one just looked weird in a few ways. I didn't even question that FAKE world record pic a few weeks ago:rotf2: But for some reason this one didn't add up to me. There have been alot of 50's taken in the last week. And they will be replaced with bigger fish. This pic still has me scratching my head>

Not convinced either way but relatively low stress for a fifty-something
No biggie
its June... people catch 50's
several of them and many 40s this past week....if you have a boat.

so what? I used to use photoshop to re-size and file my pictures
it doesn't mean I altered them just like it does not mean for sure that this photo was altered.
I'm with bigfish, if it's fake, then the guy has to live with it.
maybe we can post a thread of all big fish pictures and see if the detectives can tell what is real or not

Words spoken as a true surfcaster Putski!
Sure seems that advances in modern electronics has almost made a mockery of the "boat 50" IMO.
tlapinski 06-21-2013, 08:36 AM I received several additional high-res pictures of this fish directly from the angler and have ZERO question of the fish's weight. He also landed a 53+ the same tide and they were both weighed on a certified scale. There have now been 11 50s caught off Block in the last 7 days including two 55's and a 58.
Why is it that it seems like every single big bass is being questioned this year? Did that ding-dong in Canada really make us all that skeptical?

The Photoshop reference is local to your PC. :smash: JPG files do not carry that kind of information. On your PC, JPG files default to Photoshop. My PC JPG photos open with Windows Picture Gallery. I do agree that there is something unsettling about the photo.

Official "kill report" of last years cup. Starting at 13.8 lbs.....Seems OTW has some responsibility to at least try to discourage entering fish that have no shot at winning. How is a 13 lbs fish even legal length?
OTW is just another industry exploiting the fishery.

They could easily come up with a better way to do it. They weigh stations should be able to post up the weight the day the fish was weighed. And the board would be updated immediately rather than a month later. And anyone who weighs a smaller fish than the top leaders could be penalized. Doesn't make sense to have such a huge contest and have the most outdated method of running a leaderboard

I like how in the RI fishing report they mention that they hope people are letting the 50's go, meanwhile they sponsor a kill tournament. They can't have it both ways. Totally hypocritical.

Vic, there are lots of us getting it done. Just some of us are not killing every big fish we get. Personally, my partner and I have killed maybe 4 fish out of probably well over 100 legal fish. Those 4 fish were gut hooked. All were eaten.
By the way, I have no problem with guys keeping fish. It's why we do this thing.

bassballer 06-21-2013, 04:06 PM when you go out to stick fish with hooks, some are going to die. and when you spend money on gear, boats ect, its your right to take a fish home. Its the nature of the beast. its what we do. 1 @ 36" and be done with the BS.
That 50 is legit. When the wind lays down ill be out to stick my own 50 by any means necessary.
ThrowingTimber 06-21-2013, 04:08 PM I'm behind a desk 65 hours a week. I'm happy to see fish pics. It reminds me of what they look like :(
Agreed. I will never begrudge anyone who keeps their legal limit of fish. Rec or commercial. Hell keep 2 65# fis!! Release the 28-32 inch fish. Do I agree with seeing folks take 28 1/8" Long fish, not personally. But they're within the law.
I'd love to see a table fish and trophy fish type slot limit in ri. But the want just isn't there.. And well the enforcement... Is a joke at best.
I like it when other fishermen do well :) good on them! Big fish don't happen accidentally or from lack of preparation or we'd all have multiple 50's and 60's under our belts :) again good to see someone's getting it done :)

However if you spend time with an individual with special needs regardless of who they are the word starts to work its way as far as possible from your vocabulary. It is what it is. But at some point in time utilizing a word like that as an insult you have to realize that people with special needs might hear that word muttered about them under others breath or to their face etc. the word takes on a whole new level of ignorance.

Rockfish9 06-24-2013, 08:55 AM pictures can be decieving... I've had pictures of 20lb class that looked like they were 50+.... I've had pictures of fish in the high 50's that looked every bit of it... fish in the low 50's that looked like they were 30lbs.... some one posted an old picture here ( from 1986)of me in Surfland with my 61... imediatly there were several "photo shop" claimes... why because the picture was black and white... the original is on the "big boy" wall in surfland ( a long with 4 other 50+ fish pictures of mine)every one needs to chill... as others have said if it is "fraud" they will have to live with it... it's fishing season... time for everyone to step away from the computer and fish.. i know i have..

End of their life only because they were caught. End of their life in the same way a 53 year old guy on this board is at the end of their life. Natural life expectancy for a striped bass is 30 years. 52" and 53" fish are approximately 19 years old. They have almost 40% of their life expectancy remaining. They are rare because ~half the bass in the legal age classes are removed each year. Kill less catch more.

zimmy 06-25-2013, 08:16 PM How many 53 year old women are in the Prime of their Reproductive life?
There is no evidence of a decrease in fecundity in 20 year old class striped bass relative to smaller fish. They still produce millions more viable eggs than smaller fish. 200 years go, a human woman would rarely outlive fertility. Human women release one egg at a time. A 53" fish released could produce tens of millions of viable eggs over the remainder of its life. The science is clear. There are a lot of reasons put out there for killing bigger fish, but they are pretty much never supported by science.
Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device
When we kill all the big fat fish and release the skinny long or small fish, we are removing from the gene pool the fish that could breed more big fat fish.
Letting big health fat fish live will promote more big fat healthy fish in the future.
