On 1030, wbz, this morning a news report was given that stated a third bridge is being considered next to the Sag that would cost, 320 million (hahahhaha), and be a toll bridge as well as turning the Sag into a toll bridge, whose tolls would pay for both bridges upkeep.

why don't they just finish the tunnel?

It will never happen! A second bridge will only cause more traffic having it merge back onto rt 6 off the bridge??? To make it viable they would need to widen the highway for miles and miles in either direction otherwise it will be a waste of money....just plain ignorance thinking out loud on their part!!:smash:

I wonder whether those idiots took the time to think about how they could charge a toll for crossing a structure owned by the US Govt. (the present Sagamore bridge)?

I think I heard that the plan was to have each bridge carry one direction of travel...

The Fed's won't allow tolls on all bridges to CC. there has to be at least one toll fee. Such as Jamestown which is another island.

This state can't afford to build it in the first place. It'll never happen.

Solution: Find another time to cross the Sagamore and Bourne bridges other then peak times.

That's just it...THEY can't , but they figure that since we live and travel there, then WE should pay for it!!!

Sounds like some flunky looking to sound "important" to his/her superiors, proposed this half-arsed idea without doing ANY research.

You know, the "I'm just the idea man, someone else has to solve the traffic/building/cost problems" kind of idiot.

In other words: business as usual for this state!

Propose it, sign all the documents, get all the permits, issue all the contracts and THEN figure out how WE will pay for something that will be the new "Big Dig"!!!!

I read that their target price for this was $320 million, which includes a connector from 25 to the "new" Sagamore bridge. And the eminent domain compensation to all of the private property owners whose land these projects will cross.

I'm thinking $3.20 billion is more realistic.

$320 million won't even cover the court challenges, from environmental groups, NIMBY-ists, and all of the others who'll run right up to Boston to file the Federal court claims.

I wonder if they even ran this plan, and the "toll" idea, past the State Reps and Senators from the Cape districts? You know, the folks whose constituents will be paying that toll 10 months out of 12.

Point being....to disperse 2 bridges of traffic onto the same piece of highway that currently exists will not work.....it will only cause more traffic without widening the highway in both directions....thats the problem more or less....not so much the size of the bridge. Its never gonna happen!

On-Cape travel all crosses the "new" bridge. Off-Cape crosses the old bridge. Won't be any worse than it is now. In fact, it'll be better because all 4 lanes of the old bridge will carry off-Cape traffic, not just two. They can make the first lane a dedicated merge lane from traffic coming off 6A, too. That merge now causes a lot of the Rte 6 back-ups coming off-Cape.

It's going to create a bottleneck the other way when the traffic coming down 3, and the traffic coming off the new "connector" funnels down to 2 lanes past Market basket, but it may eliminate the back-ups on 3 to past Cedarville.

I saw this today too - doubt it will happen.

Interesting - though for Aquidneck Island they now will have Tolls on both the Jamestown side and the Tiverton side so while Jamestown has a way, A.I. does not.

Personally I think another bridge is do-able. One two lane on and one two lane off. Like Larry posted though the work on the feeder roads will cost as much as the bridge.

Love this thread. As a Tiverton and Portsmouth resident....I just love this thread.Love the "It'll never happen","The Feds won't allow it".....

....and my favorite "I wonder whether those idiots took the time to think about how they could charge a toll for crossing a structure owned by the US Govt."

It happened here and it'll happen to you if don't get up off your asses and stop it now.

Lived this already.Gonna sit back and watch the fireworks.Have fun CCers because all you have is a massive uphill battle which you will more than likely lose...now is the time to act because if you hesitate a moment you're definitely gonna lose.

Mike...re-read the part where I say the biggest problem is the existing highway system.....thus your bottleneck theory.

I agree with Basswipe… and i have heard that the State reps were told that if they voted for the guaranteed loan for Shilling's video game company, that the state would not put in a toll on the suck on it bridge.. but look what happened!!! This state is so corrupt.

Oh and for the $320 mill plus the additional cost over runs over time of about an additional $100 mill plus or minus $50 mill either way....its not going to make that much of a difference.....the highway is still just 2 lanes each way.

The connector between 3 and 25 would work for me,,,
Oh! And a new bridge just for pickups pulling boats 😎

But the bridges are just one lane. It's a classic bottleneck.

I'll be too old to drive before that gets done.
They would be better off getting rid of the Bourne Rotary and going straight thru to Otis land with a direct connect to Rt 6 and 28 south and leave MacArthur Boulevard an exit, side road, for me to use for work down to the Otis Rotary. .Oh and I'll need a raise for toll payments

This probably stems from some Nit wit bureaucrat that has a place in Sandwich. He tried to get off 4th of July wkend and it took him 4 hours to get to the bridge. He got back to work and started trying to make it happen. Well one wheel greases the other voila we have a proposed second bridge. Get the contracts signed prior to figuring out true cost. Welcome to the next Big Dig
