View Full Version : couple of questions???
locdog8169 06-28-2003, 01:16 AM went to worlds end tonight, just got back, fished the left side, casting between the two islands from shore, still nothing, anyone know if this is even a good spot, i've been trying for a couple weeks now, i've caught 3 skates, tonight i took someones advice and tied the hook to the line then used half a mackeral with no sinker and just threw it out there, they also told me to just open the bail and wait, but in the dark i couldnt tell if the line was being taken, any tips on that, also a couple times i just loosened the drag all the way, 3 times it just started zingin, but nothing there when i picked up the rod, any tips would be appreciated, still trying for my 1st ever, this is tougher than i thought, but i'll keep trying
BigBo 06-28-2003, 05:20 AM I've never fished that particular area that much, but I can tell you that all around there, the bottom lacks any structure or even any deep drop offs or channels. It's all relatively flat and muddy over there. What I'm getting at is, without any sort of structure (rocks, channels, jetty, bridge, etc.) there isn't much to attract bait for the bass to go after.
Take a drive around to some fishing access areas at dead low tide and look at what is exposed. If you see rocks or a deep water channel, or fish jetties and some bridges, I think you'll have better luck.
I'm not saying you won't catch a fish there because people have caught them there in the past. I just think you would increase your chances at a larger fish and even your hookup rate (even if they are shorts) by trying to read the water a little more. Speaking of which, pick up any of the fine books about Striper fishing. Most go into some detail at least on what to look for when sizing up an area to fish. It'll make you a little more pro-active in your search for the fat ladies and keep you interested in the sport longer.
Good luck and keep at it.:kewl:
gilligan 06-28-2003, 09:45 AM you should look into going to Webb park in weymouth. if your coming from randolph it is basically the same drive. it has alot of structure and dropoffs. go at low tide and scope it out. i think you will have better luck there
using bait at nite you should have some sort of light on your rod to watch....they make battery powered ones for your rod for about ten bucks or you can pick up a package of lunker lights and tape em on ....for about a buck a piece. this will help you see strikes in the dark......unless of course youve been staring at them all nite and you are dead tired ....then you start to hallucinate and you swear its movin when its not!!! HA!HA!
beachwalker 06-28-2003, 11:55 AM Try using a swimmer or a plug at dusk/dawn
locdog8169 06-28-2003, 03:11 PM thanks for the input, i think i'll go pick up a book and some of those lights, hopefully head out on sunday again, wish me luck
missing link 06-29-2003, 08:50 PM some rod bells they work and you dont even need to look at the rod, just listen :D
bloocrab 06-29-2003, 08:59 PM ...be patient grasshopper...:) Hold rod in hand. No one ever said it was going to be easy.
striperjerk1 06-30-2003, 08:38 AM lights. i go to radio shack get the aa/ battery holder and 1.5v light ,put hole in top of holder, tie wires together .may have to see which wire goes where cause i dont have mine to look at.put batt in. presto light, tape to top of rod light facing down.and you can cast with it on or undo wires for next day.last a long time and under 5.00 bucks.
redlite 06-30-2003, 09:03 AM Where you are fishing, I have over the past few years seen some pretty respectable fish come from right there by drifting chunks of mackeral ( no weight). It may look flat there to the unobservant eye, but if you walk around there at low tide you will infact find that you are fishing onto a monsterous mussel bed. I have stopped by there several times this year so far, but all I have seen anyone catching to this point have been skates by people fishing clams on the bottom. Good luck.
locdog8169 07-01-2003, 12:00 AM i took your advice and scouted webb state park tonight at low tide, i think i found some potential spots and drew some pictures, but what exactly am i looking for, i look for rock structures that would be covered at high tide, the channel at the end looked good and along the left side also looked good
Notaro 07-01-2003, 12:08 AM i fished there before. we could hook up if u want to.
Fisherwoman 07-01-2003, 08:35 AM LOCdog8169, try fishing these spots in the early moring at 1st light as you have less boat traffic. Both of the parks hold alot of fish. Also try using artificial lures. Pearl Shads or popper on the surface right as the sun is coming up. All of the structure in these area's hold bait and you need the bait to hold the fish. Webb state park is off of the back river and right now there is a ton of herring in there so try fishing with herring if you are going to use bait. Drift them whole in the current and try it after dark or like a said early in AM. Look for places that have a good current flowing past you and give that a try. The fish are there it is just a matter of time and that is what you have to pu in is time to really learn these spots. Best of luck!!!
