couple of questions???

went to worlds end tonight, just got back, fished the left side, casting between the two islands from shore, still nothing, anyone know if this is even a good spot, i've been trying for a couple weeks now, i've caught 3 skates, tonight i took someones advice and tied the hook to the line then used half a mackeral with no sinker and just threw it out there, they also told me to just open the bail and wait, but in the dark i couldnt tell if the line was being taken, any tips on that, also a couple times i just loosened the drag all the way, 3 times it just started zingin, but nothing there when i picked up the rod, any tips would be appreciated, still trying for my 1st ever, this is tougher than i thought, but i'll keep trying
