Oooh boy, this one has made me think..
For this one it's gotta be Steve Perry (HANDS DOWN!) , lead singer of Journey (one of my favorites). Man, I think he's got that perfect singing voice for any rock song. He can sing any crappy song and it will sound golden to me! Close second is Freddie Mercury of Queen... another unbelievable voice. I don't think there is anyone that can take some notes as high has he does....phew! For other voices... Anyone ever heard Josh Groban? I don't listen to him, but my mom and sister do, and he has a pretty impressive voice. Then for a voice of today - if you wanna call it that. Brandon Boyd- Lead singer of Incubus, i've become a fan of them lately with the release of " Dig " and their other songs like " Drive " and " Which You Were Here " (btw not a PF cover) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrzmOHNAkiI - Drive http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Z8cnXVGm1I - Dig :hee: |
spence- get this for griffin. you will be converted

Ronnie James Dio.. James Taylor.. Female..this is more difficult for me I have alot I like...But I like -Anita Baker, Susan Tedeschi |

I have to agree w/Spence and Katie, I always liked Steve Perry, even in the sappy crap. |

I like Steve Perry, a very good singer, but he sings through his nose a bit! |

Most likely not! his nose is pretty big !!! |
Here's a second vote for Jon BonJovi, Although The Eagles as a group have amazing vocals,
Females: Mariah Carey has the pipes to beat, too bad she went so ghetto |
I have a friend that looks almost exact to steve perry, its scary..
|
I think we have to throw Geddy Lee from Rush into the mix here...
Ice |
Deep Purple's lead singer, can't remember his name at this moment, had a hell of a voice too.

For singers that really put feeling into there vocals I like Joe Cocker, Ray Charles and Janis Joplin. they sing it like it MEANS something to them For Front men I like Roger Daltry, Steven Tyler, Robert Plant, Eddie Vetter and Micheal Stipe......Not technically the best but I think there voices are what make there music what it is. The absolute Best voice around.......Aretha...my god when that woman sings it is truly Amazing. Got to also give some Kudos to Whitney Houston (Pre-Bobby Brown) she had a spectacular voice.....listen to her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner if you doubt that. |

Gonna have to throw Chris Robinson in that category DF |
For male vocalist you should check out Jeff Buckley's Grace. The closest I could compare him to would be early Van. Jimmy Page said it was his favorite CD of the 90s.
For females the guy who mentioned Ella hit the nail right on the head. Otherwise for pop stuff Linda Ronstadt is pretty amazing. |

Ian Gillian
Definitely. Best song was still "Child in Time". 1968? Dio is up there. Robert Plant. Amy Lee from Evanescance & Jewel  I actually saw Jewel the fist time she ever played in Boston. Chris Cornell I'll think of more............ Eddie Vedder? Good first album. Not groundbreaking, not spectacular, just good. I wish he just shut up after that. But he can't. Green River and Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone. Much better. And my pick for the SSB will always be Rene Rancourt. |
The Eagles.
All of them. Collectively. Missed the previous post. I'll sleep when I'm dead. |

Thats a Website just waiting to happen.... Iceman I'll agree...I'm a big Black Crowes fan ....Shake Your MoneyMaker is probably one of the top 10 best albums of the 90's |
I fricken love metal.
Dio, Ian Gillian, Bruce #^^^^&enson, Rob Halford,Geoff Tate to name a few... incredible vocal groups: as mentioned, The Eagles, Doobie Bros. and Yes were amazing. Female singers: Sarah Vaughn was awesome and Tori Amos is just ridiculously talented. |

Michelle Branch. Black Crowes were fantastic. Another one I saw on Lansdowne St.(Before Soundgarden.) April or May 1990. I remember that one because I was still 20. They only checked the last two digits of my ID. First show I ever got to drink at. |
For a distinctive voice Rod Stewart is likely as recognizable as most any. With the Faces he could kick it with anybody and as a showman he could out "Mick Jagger" Mick Jagger. As for versitality he could rock, sing a love song or the blues and even touched on (unfortunately) disco. His 4 American Song Book albums are great although he should probably have stopped at two. Gotta give him credit for being able to survive the many turns in music over almost 40 years along with many bottles of brandy and blondes.

A few I didnt see...
Female- -Joni Mitchell -Sandy Denny -Emmylou Harris (best backing vocals) -Natalie Merchant Non-Female- -Howlin' Wolf -Gram Parsons -Jon Anderson (Yes) -new entry - Jim James (My Morning Jacket) |

Weird to think of Dylan in a tiny venue like that. Jewel was the bonus though. I was jammed up against the stage looking up. Jewel was sporting her typical short skirt. What a show. |
Rikki Lee Jones..........the stuff she did with Dr. John really highlighted her voice in contrast to his.
|
male- geoff tate
female- martina mcbride, jamie oneal |
