Most Over Rated Rock Bands!

I was listening to the radio today and the station I had on played a bit of The Who's Quadraphenia album.....now I have never been a huge Who fan, I like some of their music but I always believed them to be over rated when held up to the bright light of other bands like the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin.....Pete Townsend to me has to be the most over rated guitar player ever......I don't think I have ever heard him play anything other than power chords and would not know a good solo if it fell on him......the stupid windmill gimmick he always had....nothing more than smoke and mirrors along with alot of noise!

I am going to take some heat from Who fans I know so I might as well throw in The Greatful Dead as over rated.....I just never got them.....OK Slip...bring the heat!:hihi:

What bands do you think were over rated?

The Dad Fisherman 12-27-2005 01:32 AM

Nirvana....WAY Over-rated.....I think Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters are churning out some better music than they did w/ Nirvana.

Not a big Springsteen fan either....Great Song-writer.....but he needs to get someone else to sing.

I'll even agree with you about townsend being just an average Guitarist....But his talent w/ that band was as song-writer. Entwistle and Moon were the musicians of the Who. Moon could work magic on those drums and Entwhistle's Bass playing, Especially on Quadrophenia was Awesome.

And you mention them not being able to compare with a band like the Stones, as far as musicians they are over-rated too. Keith Richards is also an average Guitarist, Charlie Watts is terrible on the Drums, and Bill Wyman is an average bassist, Ron Wood is a decent guitarist but I think his better days were back when he played with The Faces. I don't think they would make it without Mick Jagger's on stage presence.

Raven 12-27-2005 06:22 AM

you guys.....

should be side by side radio disc Jockey's ...oops too late ,everything has gone digital... that'll be $9.99 please just to listen...
i'd rather buy a guitar or listen to the birds sing or the wind blowing through the tree's before i pay for radio.... :faga:

redneck24 12-27-2005 06:29 AM

Led Zepplin #1 over rated band in the world.

Beatles #2 rolling stones were far better.

BigBo 12-27-2005 08:33 AM

Not sure if I consider him the worst ever, but whenever I hear Steve Miller, it's like someone raking their fingernails accross a blackboard. Just heard some this morning and I have to swicth the channels immediately.

afterhours 12-27-2005 08:39 AM

the dead overated.... ...bite your lip larry you just can't hear them. i'll be sure to have some in my jeep next week! the most overrated band has to be the rolling stones, piss poor musicians imho.

BigFish 12-27-2005 08:41 AM

I guess I need to be smokking pot or dropping acid so I can see the pretty colors!:eyes:

afterhours 12-27-2005 08:43 AM

nah.....no drugs needed. just refined audio sensory preception :btu:

BigFish 12-27-2005 08:46 AM

I am sure the bands we speak of strike a chord (pardon the pun) with someone...or else they would not be where they are....the Who and The Grateful Dead just do nothing for me but make me shake my head...add Genesis to the list!:tm:

Goose 12-27-2005 09:27 AM

One more for the dead:tm: What the hell, you got over 8600 posts BF Daaaaam!!

RIJIMMY 12-27-2005 09:50 AM

Interesting topic, I am way to opinionated on this to really chime in, my post would be too long.
I don't like the WHo at all, but Townsends songwriting is very creative, he's not a lead player at all, but his acoustic work is well played.

IMHO, you cannot judge a great rock band by how good their musicianship is, the Ramones are a fantastic band, but lame musicians. The greatest rock guitar player ever, would be a bad jazz player so you cant base it on that.
AHours, I'm suprised how you feel about the Stones, they should have stopped making music in the mid-seventies, but before that I think they made some of the best R&R ever. Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street are the best albums I own.
I really cant say who I think the most overrated band is, but look forward to others posts.

RIJIMMY 12-27-2005 09:57 AM

Ok, I thought about it.......my vote is for the Eagles.
Boring, country rock, never as cool as real honky tonk, and never as cool as real rock. Joe Walsh is the coolest cat and I love the James Gang, but the Eagles put me to sleep. DOn Henly makes we want to puke. Thats my vote! :tm:

ProfessorM 12-27-2005 10:09 AM

Sorry Larry Quadrophenia probably my favorite Who album. Ahead of the curve at the time. Most overated lets see you got an hour. Way way too many to list. I do not and have not for at least 10 years listened to any commercial radio stations so I am out of the loop as far as bands now that suck. I do listen to obscure stations that play the kind of music I like but mostly living in the past with my own style's of music on CD's. I will say right now the band that I hate, overrated, more than anything is Jimmy Buffet. That guy sucks plain and simple. I probably say this because the guy I work with at night plays that %$%$%$%$ 8 hours a night 365 days a year. When he told me he got an MP3 player and now he can play like 18 straight hours:doh: I wanted to go over to the lathe and sharpen a piece of stainless and perforate my eardrums. Enough already please. Paul

BigBo 12-27-2005 10:29 AM

Yeah, I'll definetely agree with the Jimmy Buffet vote for one of the worst.:tm:

Bernzy 12-27-2005 11:26 AM

U-2, good but nothing more than that.

Bernzy

Swimmer 12-27-2005 11:49 AM

Interesting question Bigfish......

Beatles...yech

Stones are better if only for the people playing the instruments

U2 a little better but voice has no range

Aerosmith ........controlled screaming...good guitar work

Who.......some pretty good stuff

Zep....everybody listens just to hear the awesome guitar rips

Jimmy Hendrix....can't sing for chit....not bad on guitar

They all had gimicks though. Outrageous behavior that garnered them admiration with the current generation.

Iron Butterfly.....one hit wonder indagadadavida....kida of sucked though...might be the worst I can think of...

chris L 12-27-2005 12:44 PM

the eagles - just cause of the cost of tickets
U2 - hate the music and the politics
the dead - good band but not holier than the rest
these next 3 are just because
the ramones
twisted (&%^$%$ sister
spinal tap

The Iceman 6 12-27-2005 01:15 PM

U2 clearly not overrated but hey, that's why each of us have our own opinions and I just added mine. NOW, let's talk underrated, for me the most underrated band is the Black Crowes.

Ice
:spidey:

BigFish 12-27-2005 01:23 PM

Iceman...I will agree with you on that and thats only because they had too much inner strife and they broke up too early...saw them open for ZZ Top and they were great!

afterhours 12-27-2005 03:26 PM

maybe i was a little too harse on the stones....larry got me all worked up!

The Iceman 6 12-27-2005 04:07 PM

BigFish -

Saw them on Good Friday and Easter Sunday of this year @ Hammerstein, think they went 7 shows straight. The Easter Sunday show, everybody wore white, words cannot describe how much they rocked. But yeah, this thread to me I mean how bad are Zep, ABB, Crowes, U2, Who, Dead, Zep, Marley, Jimmy, Doors, Floyd, all others mentioned compared to today's bands, I mean imo they blow them all away hands-down. Maybe some overated, but they all F'n rock in one way or another. We can talk fav artists albums now, two of my favorittes, "2112" and "Joshua Tree"

I digress,

Ice

Striperknight 12-27-2005 04:11 PM

The Doors:rocketem:

MakoMike 12-27-2005 04:31 PM

U2 has to bo the current most overrated.

Lots of others in the past.

Squibby17 12-27-2005 05:11 PM

IMO most overated band is KISS

they wear make up and Gene simmons has a long tongue thats about all they bring to the table

Also dont like,

Tom Petty

Jimmy Buffet

Bruce Springstein

U2

Fleetwood mac, it goes on

Also "Jimmy Hendrix....can't sing for chit....not bad on guitar"

I couldn't disagree anymore. I love Jimmy, no one plays the guitar like him even today, but hey its all personal opinion

striprman 12-27-2005 05:17 PM

Limp Biskit with Fred Durst

Pete_G 12-27-2005 06:44 PM

Nirvana definitely was age dependant, I thought. I was a freshman in high school when they first started being noticed, and trust me, they were a BIG deal to a lot of people in that age bracket.

As for the Dead, if you've only listened to studio albums it's perfectly understandable that you don't get it. You have to dig thru the vaults to get to the good stuff. AH, if you ever want really high quality GD, I've got it. My Mom and one of my uncles were tapers and had some shows even the Dead didn't have so I have lots of 1st gen digital stuff that they got through trading.

Ditto, oh throw in U2 TO

Raider Ronnie 12-27-2005 07:12 PM

Most over rated

Rolling Stones !!!
They have had some great songs but they should have called it quits 30 years ago !!!

nightfighter 12-27-2005 07:18 PM

RIJimmy,
Gotta get you to an Eagles concert, I think you'll come home with a different take. U2 show this summer was one of the worst I've ever been to.

What bands do you think were over rated?

Larry, as a guitar player for the last 40 years I must say that the Who's music is amongst my favorite. Townsends blending of acoustic riffs backed by power chords are thier not for the reasons one might think. True, lots of bands use the power chord as the main body of thier music. Bands in the big hair era like Motley Crue ( who I happen to love) and Ratt etc were no where near the musicians Townsend, Daltrey, Moon and Entwhistle were. The blending of the many tones both acoustic and slung low Les Paul with all knobs on ten were thier to convey the dramatic impact of the song and it's story rather than a 3 knot power chords wall of noise masking the inability and range of some supposed "super Stars". The Who's music is as technical as it comes along with Led Zepplin's. Ever try to keep up with Jimmy Page while playing along? Tough assignment for the best of them.
My fav players were Mick Ronson, Bowie's late lead man who was classically trained, Jeff Beck and PM'S fav, Frank Zappa, really a genuis when you think that he actually WROTE every note played on his albums.

Overated, The grateful dead to be sure, Lynyrd Skynyrd, AC-DC and just about all the newer bands.

To be truely great on a guitar you have to be able to capture the emotion of the song, to convey through the notes you play the hurt, joy, emptiness of the piece and make it recognizable as such when you play it.

Slipknot 12-28-2005 03:40 PM

this thread is way over rated:conf:

in order to be over rated, something first has to be rated. OK, who did the rating?:gf:
Maybe it's a matter of taste.

I don't take offense bigfish because I know some bands are not understood like the Dead, you have to get to know what they are about. They even said once on Letterman "if we ever make a really good album, I'm sure they'll rush out and buy it" . Their live stuff is where their best stuff is, it's an experience thing. If you ever went to a show where they were all clicking together and they transition from China Cat Sunflower toI know you rider, then you'd know what "on" is. They mesh together and it's insane. Now you're making me go put a CD on:jester:

The Stones after 1980 are over rated:yak:

BigFish 12-28-2005 03:44 PM

I know what you mean Slip and I am not saying they are not a great band in the eyes of their fans who enjoy their music...all I am saying is that in your own opinion......who would any one individual think was over rated....just meant for some spirited comment from the many music lovers we have. I bet if I had seen the Dead live....(that sounds funny) if I had seen them live I bet I would have thought they were pretty darn good!;)

dats it "."

Jimbo 12-28-2005 04:46 PM

I'm so bored at work today I'm actually going to jump in on this one. I think Slipknot is dead on ba11s accurate with his response. I think you really have to have some rating criteria for bands before you say one's overrated and another's underrated. I would think things like how consistently they're pumping out new material and not reshuffling the old stuff for yet another Greatest Hits album. Seems like a lot of people are citing specific examples of musicians' talents or lack thereof, that has to be a ratable trait. Someone needs to make up a scorecard.
BUT, I would at least agree with ChrisL and Twisted Sister, as well as most other heavy metal bands. I don't think it takes an ounce of talent to scream and play at a deafening volume while dressed like a sideshow act. Never thought Gun's 'N Roses was worth the price of admission, either. I have not seen a Rappin Mikey performace either so I won't pass judgement. Maybe at the next TFCTFN. Oh wait, sorry, this was rock bands. Hey a good and safe New Year everyone.

Exactly

Which is why this doesn't qualify for "most over rated" I don't recall anyone evr characterizing them as one of the great rock bands. In fact they were ON VH1's "One Hit Wonders"
